We decided to go castle hunting as we had time to kill. Given the location off the motorway, it certainly did kill some time hunting it down. Followed by a trek (via car) up the mountain to reach it.
Arriving near closing time, we did not do the tour. But at least we have been in a castle over 1000 years old...

Many people that we have spoken with have stated, and we agree, that the Wachau Valley is simply splendid. Breathtaking views of wine country, charming towns, monasteries and terraced vineyards. You will pass many UNESCO world heritage sites. This wine producing region goes back to the Romans. A wonderful journey through time.

Castle Kuernriger (Schloß Kürnriger) is the main attraction of Durnstein (Dürnstein). It is the ruins of the castle in which Richard Leoncoeur, King of England was held prisoner for a year while returning from a Crusade. The ransom was used by the Duke of Babenberg to build the city walls of Vienna. This is a popular historical attraction especially for British people.

Steep walk up to the castle that Legend has it imprisoned Richard the Lionheart. The castle is now mostly ruins but nonetheless the views across the river but well worth your effort.
The town itself is full of touristy type shops, not for me but I guess that we all have to make a living!!

In the grand scheme of things, this may be a small church as some have said. But seen from the river, in the context of the quaint towns hugging the sides of the Danube throughout the Wachau Valley, it looks quite impressive and beautiful.

A small but fascinating museum explaining the excavation of the Venus, and the discovery of similar ancient artefacts from across Europe. Moving and well kept for visitors.

you will just pay 2 euros and you can see a small room with few artefacts. Staff was a bit rude in time of our visit. Free visit to excavation site, but all writing were in german language. Good scenic view, i recommend this place much more then the museum. And it is only 50m from museum.
Small place for a bit rest.

The bakery museum is a tip for visitors Wachau. Showing a clay oven dating back to 1625, a 100-year old sales room and utensils baker. It tells of the daily routine of a country bakery around 1930. Once a month baking bread with sales. In addition, you expect an exceptional Museum Café (open all year) with hot food and a shop with local produce.

Within the Wachau valley the towns were much blessed. the climate and terrain for the vineyards and the Donau as the other way of transportation to the neighboring towns.. With this, tourist come and go. The charming small towns welcome visitors every now and then.
Though we did not make our climb we still had the glimpse of the landmark of Spitz.

I am so happy to finally see this church listed in Tripadvisor. One of the highlights of our Danube River excursion would have to be the visit to Wehrkirche St. Michael in the town of Weißenkirchen. It's a beautiful church in a picturesque setting. Part of the church dates back to the 10th century. There is also a fortified part of the church that was built in the 15th century. The interior is worth a look as well. Do go to the underground ossuary if it's open. The first reviewer described it perfectly. I was unable to get to it from the inside, but there is a window on the lower part of the church wall that will allow you to see the collection place of the bones. I took a picture from that window (not a very good one), but it does show you some detail of the ossuary.
A part of the church that people don't notice right away is the outer roof of the nave. There are seven rabbits carved out of stone. It's unique to this church. There is a legend tied to the 7 stone rabbits of St. Michael that sit on top of that roof. If you look very closely, you'll see five of them in the picture that I took from the river boat. It's a sight to see up close. The legend says that these rabbits climbed up to the roof on a cold winter's day. They fell asleep. The snow had melted when they awoke from their sleep but they couldn't find a way back down (so they remain there today). How cute is that?
There is also a beautiful view of the Danube River from the church cemetery. It was so peaceful! It was one of my favorite stops along the Danube. There is so much beauty in this village. Don't miss it!

The church is worth 5 Points. Outside it is light blue and white with a pleasing ornate design. It can be seen from miles away and is one of the two emblematic buildings of the town. The inside I would call restrained Baroque: highly decorated, but without the Kitsch often associated with that style.
The Stift (Monastery) is a different story. I would give it 1 Point for its drab color, box-like construction and ugly roof. I found nothing at the monastery worth stopping for.
