The 10 best Specialty lodgings in Ohio, United States

April 19, 2023 Ying Subia

If you are looking for an active place to stay with world-class attractions, Ohio’s major cities can satisfy any vacation desire. Each offers its own distinct flavor of fun, from professional sports – Bengals (Cincinnati), Cavaliers (Cleveland) and Indians (Cleveland again) – to museums, outdoor activities and more. One of the most famous is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. If football is your thing, don’t miss the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. For the science-minded, visit the meat eaters at the Carnivore Conservation Center in the Wilds near Cambridge, dedicated to the breeding and scientific study of endangered mid-sized carnivores. Kids will also love Planet Snoopy in Sandusky or the Columbus Zoo’s Zoombezi Bay Waterpark and Jack’s Landing rides.

Our favorite hotel stay ever, and it's even good with a baby!

We just completed our first stay at the Doghouse Hotel and it was truly one of the greatest hotel experiences we've ever had. Because we love beer and unique experiences, we had high expectations and our stay surpassed every one of them. The moment we walked into the hotel bar/lobby area we were greeted by a friendly face and 2 "check-in beers"--you just can't beat that check-in experience. Over the course of the 3 night stay we made friends with all of the employees we encountered. Literally everyone was friendly, welcoming, and showcased genuine hospitality. The manager, Gilead, Tilly, and Andrew worked our entire stay and made us feel like part of the family. They interacted with our 9 month old baby and above & beyond to ensure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. We can't speak highly enough about the staff--they were just that good. We booked a double queen room and it was spotless and comfortable. Even though it's a dog-friendly hotel, there were no signs of pets in our room. The beds were super comfortable and we made use of the in-room guitar and record player. And if it's your first stay, we highly recommend the in-room keg and shower beers. It was A LOT of beer to drink over 3 days, but it was delicious and worth it. We really savored our room experience and have no negative feedback at all. Last, the room price includes breakfast with beer-mosas and a nightly "Stout & Cookie" happy hour. Both were incredible, and the breakfast food far surpassed our expectations. If you are a fan of beer and/or unique stays, then we HIGHLY recommend this hotel. This place is worth the hype and provide some incredible memories to bring back home . . . as long as you don't drink too much beer and forget.

Newer hotel, good for overnight stay

Typical TownePlace, with kitchen in room. Overly hard mattress, which was surprising for a Marriott property. (Great if you like hard mattresses...) Newer facility so good for an overnight stop. Breakfast quality and selection seems to have gone done since pre-covid times.

Immaculate, updated and classically decorated home. Gracious hosts serving up a delicious full course breakfast. Large shared areas including a kitchen and screened in porch. Most of all, a lovely beach town to visit with a very clean public beach that includes a boardwalk. Lots of nature: eagles and sunsets! Very good, affordable dining as well.

Cute boutique hotel; noise issues

Reviewed By Iridescentkittie

This is a small boutique hotel in downtown Sandusky. It is very cute and modern-feeling. The room was very nice - soft, comfortable beds, extremely soft towels, HUGE bathroom with rain showerhead and excellent toiletries (shampoo, etc.) The only bad thing I have to say is that there is no soundproofing between rooms/floors whatsoever. You can hear EVERYTHING, including the mere sound of someone walking on the floor above you. I expected this going into the stay (having read previous reviews) and so I brought a white noise machine. This, plus the provided ear plugs, made this a non-issue. My advice is to know what you are getting into -- if you are sensitive to noise, you may want to reconsider. There is free parking right across the street from the hotel, and many other free lots nearby if that one happens to be full. The on-site restaurant/bar on the ground floor was cute - we had drinks one night and it was a nice atmosphere. The rooftop bar was not open for the season (we were there in late April). I would stay here again if I was in the area. Just remember to pack that white noise machine!

Very nice new hotel

Reviewed By MaryJT1947

We only stayed one night at this location, but we were very impressed by our room…a king bed studio on the 1st floor. The hotel is very new. It opened October 2021 so everything is still clean and has not been used or abused. The room had a kitchenette with sink, cabinets, small dishwasher, two burner stove, and small frig. The bathroom had a shower, no tub, which we prefer. This suite was perfect for the two of us.

My boyfriend and I stayed for 3 nights when we originally only planned on 2, they were extremely friendly and easy to work with! Older but very clean and only a small smell that wasn’t even noticeable after a few minutes. Super close to cedar point and easy to get to restaurants and fishing spots. Will definitely be staying again! Very friendly people.

New hotel with big problems. Comfort Inn AND Mainstay Suites

Reviewed By vbtravels

Waaay too many things were wrong for a new hotel. The TV wouldn't get any stations. The front desk gal was very helpful, but it still took over an hour and three different remotes for her to be able to corrct the situation so I could watch TV. There were no directions for the internet and, despite long effort, I couldn't get that to work either. The same gal worked at it and made it possible for me to get on. The room thermostat was on 62 degrees when I arrived and it took FOREVER for the room to warm up. I went out for a bit, and when I returned, the thermostat had reset itself to 62. The gal said she didn't know what to do to make it better, she would ask. I never heard back. During the night, it reset itself to 62 again, and I woke up cold and unhappy. Also, without the heater running, the road noise was more prevalent. (I was put in a front room near the most traffic despite asking for a "quiet" room.) I asked the staff in the morning, midday, and late in the evening the next day about the thermostat problem--nobody had a clue what to do. And interestingly, not one staff person offered me an alternate room despite the hotel being almost empty. Finally, I was awakened in the middle of the night in the very cold room by a loud clicking noise in the area around the microwave. It concerned by greatly because it was annoying and woke me up from a dead sleep, but also because it didn't seem to be coming from any of the appliances and might have been a short in the wall. I called staff to come hear the intermittent noise, and the staff person who promised to come investigate never showed up even though I waited up until after 11:30 pm (over an hour) for his arrival. (Yes, I called down several times when he didn't show, and received repeated promises that he'd by up as soon as he could.) By the time I reached someone from the next shift, he came up and was as helpful as he could be, but the clicking that had lasted for an hour again had stopped. I mentioned it again in the morning to the staff as I checked out--the night guy had not said anything to the incoming staff. So, a lovely new hotel with massive TV problems (read the other reviewer's comments), internet issues, heat problems, and room noises that distracted sleep. Plus more minor inconvenienes such as en entire living room area without one single plug available to plug in a phone or laptop--crazy! No luggage racks at this hotel--the floor is the only option. A so-so breakfast by Choice standards. I can't recommend this hotel as it is now.

WiFi was not free and barely worked even when I paid for it. Manager threated to kick me out on day 3 of my paid for 2 week stay with no refund for asking about the wifi. I ended up staying a month with my 4 kids because our pipes had busted in our home and we had no choice as the other hotels were fully booked once my 2 weeks was up. In the month I stayed my room was not cleaned one time and I only got one change of sheets and towels in the entire month. An employee knocked on my door and asked if I needed anything so I stated towels and sheets and he gave me a trash bag to exchange them. Management came back and told me not to stop employee's for linen exchange, I told them I did not stop him, he knocked on my door. There was yellow stains all over the ceiling of my nonsmoking room and there were roaches. When showering the yellow ceilings drip everywhere. Outlet was not in the wall properly as when I pulled my plug out, the outlet came out as well. 0 amenities for $2000 a month is NOT worth the aggression and intimidation you'll receive from Management and cleaning staff. Also, read the very insensitive responses from the Hotel Management in the other reviews here and you'll see a little of what I am talking about. They don't even care enough to respond professionally on a visible platform. The responses are very insensitive to the numerous similar complaints. And hairs in the washcloth.

My husband were in the area for a ham radio convention. This area was close to where it was happening and accepted pets. Prices were reasonable and the staff was very helpful (even at 1 am) when we needed to know where the hotel was located exactly. It has a Jeffersonville address but is the next exit south of the exit for the village of Jeffersonville. The room was clean and very quiet even being so close to the interstate. It sits on the edge of a small neighborhood near a field. The staff wanted to make sure your visit was good. They don't serve breakfast but have coffee 24 hrs available in the office.

First of all, BE AWARE OF THIS: After I had already booked the hotel, non-refundable because I booked the day before, I was notified that to finalize my booking they needed to get more information about me, including driver's license information so that they could complete a BACKGROUND CHECK. After I reserved the room and printed the confirmation I did not go back into my email that evening. That next day, the day of my stay, I got a text about 2:30 in the afternoon that I needed to submit the additional information prior to 6 p.m. in order to "ensure you are able to stay with us." I was in an important meeting but took the time to submit. While I am glad that they take the safety of their guests seriously, I feel that this should have been made perfectly clear from the beginning. I booked from their website, not a 3rd party, and didn't see anywhere that they would do a background check. Afterwards, I did go back to their website and searched and finally saw this when I clicked on the Terms and Conditions at the very bottom of their webpage and read through all of the fine print. Who really seeks those out and reads them? Me next time. I have nothing to hide, but that is not the point. I just think when they know they intend to invade a client's privacy in such a way they need to let him/her know in a more frank and up front way (not hidden in the fine print where you'd have to search for it to find it) before booking a non-refundable room with a credit card. Note that you will need to use your phone to access the building, elevator, room, etc. I did not see that anywhere in writing either. Heaven forbid a guest did not have a smart phone! I went to a Reds game the night I stayed there and worried when I saw my phone battery was getting low. There is no front desk or anything so I don't know what would have happened if my phone had died. Otherwise, accommodations were fine. Very clean and very quiet. I'm not trying to put this establishment down at all. I just feel like customers need to be made aware of pertinent information beforehand.
