The 10 best Motels in Tucson, United States

April 22, 2023 Jasper Kershner

Although Tucson's fantastic weather, national parks and forests and desert provide the perfect environment for tons of outdoor recreational activities, this city of half a million people also has its share of history and culture. With a history that goes back much further than many of its southwestern neighbors, Tucson boasts turn-of-the-century architecture, historic neighborhoods, museums and the Mission San Xavier del Bac, a still-functioning 18th-century mission considered one of the most beautiful in the U.S. Mexican and Native American influences are pervasive, and the city has a distinctly Western flavor. There's also a college-town atmosphere, thanks to the University of Arizona, which has its own share of museums and a science center. Whether golfing at a world-class golf resort, horseback riding, hiking in the wilderness, discovering desert flora and fauna at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum or exploring pre-Columbian and other art at the Tucson Art Museum, you'll have a mind-boggling array of things to do.

Overall, this is a nice hotel with rooms priced at a reasonable rate. The air conditioning worked well in our room and that was important given Tucson's summer temperatures. It is next door to a 24/7 restaurant, Denny's, which makes for convenience in dining at odd times. A shopping center is across the street and a CVS drug store is only a walking-distance block away.

Some good, some bad

Staff was friendly, room was mostly good, rest of the motel needs some work. Issues with the room were minor, not really worth mentioning. We used the stairs to go in and out since were were on the 2nd floor and right next to the stairwell. The floor covering was off on some steps, pealing off on others. The exit door looked like it's on its last legs and didn't give a feeling of security, like a hard pull would either open it or pull it off the frame. Smoking and non-smoking rooms have no separation, the room across the hall was smoking, and we got a good smell of it every time we went in or out. Could explain the smell of smoke in our room.

Did not rise to meet lowered expectations

I know that this area is challenged, to put it nicely. My previous stay, there the conditions were better, furnishings wise. But the true difference was the friendly staff. This visit the reception was very unwelcoming. In the evening, when we asked about the pool and Jacuzzi, the evening desk clerk was just as unfriendly. (and the Jacuzzi was not working). In the room, the lamps all had outlets and USB ports, but two of the three ports were busted. the curtains stained, the flooring and carpet were so dirty that my short walk from the shower to the desk chair to put on socks left the soles of my feet black like I had been walking barefoot outside. As I mentioned, the furniture was worn and not maintained. The Fridge and Microwave were nice. The door locks were newer and they had converted flooring to half vinyl plank since my last visit. The lingering issues were two-fold. 1) I did not like the additional $8 nightly fee. If Parking and Wifi are free, this fee is for what? I was actually charged $17 for the one night in extra fees. 2) Nearly immediately after I checked out, my credit card was hit with two fraudulent charges totaling nearly $300. I cannot say that these were the act of someone at Red Roof Inn, but I only presented this particular card at the hotel and nowhere else in a 48 hour period. All in all, I had hoped this property would provide a similar experience as before, but it is simply not the same caliber of an operation.

Worst Motel Ever!!!

Literally the worst motel I’ve ever stayed in!! Room was filthy, bed cover was dirty and worn, toilet and bathroom was grubby!! Internet was extremely slow, tv was very glitchy, bed was hard and uncomfortable. Towels were an absolute joke. Walls and surroundings were dirty and old. Never, ever, ever, ever stay in this hotel!!! Guy on the reception desk isn’t professional and is very rude, very unsafe with homeless people walking outside the motel with zero security!! For $90 a night I expect more than this disgusting room!!!
