Ocean View suite - well worth the extra!

Reviewed By aichii

This hotel is one of the most famous in Toba…and probably was a real gem 40/50 years ago when the Japanese Emperor and even Queen Elizabeth II stayed here…but like Toba itself is probably not what it once was! The hotel is in 2 wings (the Ocean wing and the Harbor wing) At first we booked a Harbor wing room. The room, while offering a view of the water, looks out onto the back of the ferry terminal in the distance. Also it seems that the sightseeing boats sometimes come into this area to turn or park up.From about 7 am you will hear boarding sounds to announce the different ferries leaving….which certainly makes it a more lively experience. We were offered an upgrade (unfortunately not free) to an Ocean View suite for ¥2500 per person…and after seeing the room we jumped at the chance. A huge room (two big beds) with uninterrupted views out to sea.Probably refurbished about 4 or 5 years ago…the bedroom and sitting area were very nice with a telescope for birdwatching if you are interested. Also a Nespresso coffee machine and free water. The bathroom and toilet seemed older and while it was lovely to have a bath in the morning with the sun streaming in and the wind blowing, these rooms could probably do with an upgrade to put them in line with the bedroom/sitting area (don’t look too carefully at the floors…carpets…tatami flooring or the big green bathtub) Package included breakfast. There was good English signage on the different foodstuffs on offer. The Japanese food selection seemed good/the western options a little disappointing (omelettes…cooked to order if you ask/fish and chips/pizza/sausage and grilled bacon) There is no hot spring in this hotel itself. The sister hotel - Shiojitei - a beautiful looking Japanese style ryokan hotel houses the baths.Guests can use the pearl baths by either walking easily from the Harbor view rooms (about 2-3 minutes) or take a shuttle bus from the reception area. The baths were very nice…but if they are the purpose of your stay then stay at Shiojitei as you can wear your yukata and just pop up/down from your room. You have to dress/undress appropriately if you stay in the International and this might be a little too much trouble to go to the baths a number of times! The staff are excellent.Very friendly and welcoming(a few spoke English)Their shuttle services to/from the train station are frequent and they will even do outside of the schedule if you are lucky! Also they take guests to/from Shiojitei at the drop of a hat. All in all.Beautiful views from the Ocean wing suites. If that s what you re looking for worth the upgrade from the Harbor wing rooms. The ocean views are better from the International…whereas for a Japanese feeling hotel with the main focus on the hot-spring baths I would stay at Shiojitei.

Beautiful room

Reviewed By aichii

Still great! Stayed at this hotel 2 years ago before the world changed due to the pandemic and was lucky enough to stay in a Sakura room on the 8th floor at that time…so was hoping to stay there again! Unfortunately no such luck as the hotel was completely full (it seemed) with a lot of families and a coach party (not the best feeling as we move out of the pandemic!) The pluses: Free shuttle from the train station Welcome drinks in the lobby (1 alcoholic drink per person) Shampoo and body soap bar…if interested Fantastic selection and quality of the dinner and breakfast buffets Large baths which allow you to feel pretty isolated even when quite full. The minuses: The rooms on the 5/6/7th floors have seen better days….rooms near the hot spring baths on the 2/3 & 4th floors seems to be the best along with the Sakura rooms on the 8th floor. Pretty noisy from 7 am at the front of the hotel. Presence of groups at this time does not add to a feeling of safety. All in all…so glad that this hotel has survived the last year and a half! Would definitely stay again if I could get a good deal!

Perfectly Setup

We were visiting Kochoran during our trip from Nagoya to Ise. When we arrive the hotel shuttle is a white limo with driver warm welcoming. After checkin, we went out for a walk. Nothing much nearby. Room is big on the second floor, arond 600sq feet We head back to the hotel for a quick bath. Onsen hotspring water was hot and just right with the temperature. Clean and nice setup. I also had the open top Onsen the next morning, which the view was stunning. Food, is among the top class in Onsen hotel. Dinner, serving the seasonal seafood inside the room. Lobster, scallops, fish, shrimps. Breakfast, traditional Japanese style, served with seasonal ingredients. As a foreign visitor to Mie Prefecture, we were awarded 10k yen credits for each person to spend on shops and restaurent. We used the credits in the hotel souvenirs shop. This is part of the government promotion and end in Feb 2016. Staff were extremely warm and helpful. Definitely will visit again. Been to lots of other Onsen, this is one of the hidden gem not to be miss. I would give 4.5 stars overall.

Nice onsen baths

Reviewed By aichii

Coming to Toba often I have wanted to stay at Senpokaku to see what it’s like. It has a commanding position in the mountains above Toba. Good value for money at just under ¥6000 per night (no food) but including taxes and the ¥150 bathing fee. Hotel offers a free shuttle service between 2.40 - 6 pm from the Kintetsu side of Toba station....checkout is 10 am and the last shuttle back down to the station is at 10.20 (but it’s an easy walk downhill to the (sleepy) town below.A lot of the places close in Toba on Wednesdays so bear that in mind. The good things about the hotel:Good and strong wifi signal in the room. Very nice indoor and outdoor baths on the 7th floor...but they are in different places so you need to dry off and move to enjoy both...which is a little inconvenient! The baths were empty between 8.30 - 9 in the morning (they close between 9 am - 3 pm) The staff were pleasant ,spoke a little English and hand out a simple instruction sheet in English when you check in to explain about the baths etc. The view from the 5th floor was pleasant of the mountainside and down to the water in the distance. On the downside...the hotel is old and the room while large for 1 person could do with a refurbishment as the sink, tatami mats, sitting area and walls/doors were stained and rather unappealing....and there was a lingering smell of smoke (not sure if this hotel distinguishes between smoking and non-smoking rooms) Also there are no English instructions in the rooms so you might struggle with finding the bilingual button on the TV remote control or how to heat the water and use the Japanese kettle! All in all ok for an overnight stay and probably quite pretty views in autumn and spring when the trees are changing colour and the cherry blossoms are in bloom!

Value exceeded expectations

Reviewed By JewDontKnow

My husband and I road tripped here from our home in Kansai and had a wonderful 1 night stay here. With a few improvements I think this could be 5! - Room had an incredible picturesque view with “ocean side” selection. We opted for the basic room and was pleasantly surprised! Much larger and more appointed than expected #614. Futons were comfy too. - Dinner was great and the $20 upgrade per person was worth it. The presentation alone was impressive (fish head decor! Lol) However, the Ise shrimp was way over cooked and no flavor ~ we couldn’t eat it and was bummed! Breakfast in the main dining room was fine too, appreciated the few western items hehe - Customer Service a bit lazy and slim. No one offered to help with luggage when we arrived lol We also felt very rushed during dinner - it was comical actually, the attendant was lingering and kept coming in when we closed the door (as it was noisy being across the service elevator room). Also weird experience buying special yukata w/ male staff being super up close uncomfortable hahaha would have appreciated woman staff help. - Onsens were good but not amazing. On par for price point. Could be a bit cleaner on the grout. They charge extra I’d you need towels so we just air dried. They should spin it as an eco play to not come off as cheap lol I understand the tactic to curb towel abuse though so whatever. - Very happy with their karaoke private room, 90 minutes for a super reasonable price with great song selection and seemed new. Staff that helped was kind. - Random vending machines around property for snacks and drinks of all kinds was fun. All in all, would return maybe even 2 nights! Very fair pricing. Perhaps being the family next time. The area is wonderful and more to explore. Thanks for a comfortable and enjoyable time!
