A slice of paradise! Exceeded our expectations.

Reviewed By bengarland123

Kiri-no-sato Takahara Lodge is one of the best mountain getaways I have EVER been to. It totally exceeded my expectations in every way. The price is super reasonable, even when considering that my wife and I went during a national holiday time of year. The dinner and breakfast were both 5-star quality and easily worth $90 per person just for that -- the dinner was 9+ courses, including sushi, japanese pickles, chilled sesame tofu, miso soup, fish and chips, sukiyaki, fried tofu with vegetables, roasted wild boar, a pizza cooked in a real wood oven, and fermented peaches. In our room, we had very comfortable beds, a great view across the mountain valley, DIY coffee, air conditioning, and a very calm relaxing atmosphere. Just a short walk down the hall was the onsen which was also very relaxing with a nice mountain view. I really can't think of anything that would make our experience better, because Jian has thought of everything already! He's a very welcoming host and even came to pick us up in his jeep during the pouring rain when we got lost hiking through the woods. I don't visit many places twice, because usually it's "been there, done that!" but I cannot wait to return! It's like a little slice of paradise! Also don't worry about language issues because Jian speaks fluent Japanese, English, and Spanish.

A hotel on its own

Reviewed By dancerizk

Hotel Harvest Nankitanabe is really located in the middle of nowhere in Wakayama, and even walking to the nearest convenience store requires a 30-minute stroll out of the hotel compounds, down the path to cross the road, then back on the path on the opposite side. (But fret not, there is a vending machine at the basement of the hotel). The hotel is amazingly beautiful, both from afar and within the compounds. The setting sun makes for a good backdrop, as the towering structure of the hotel stands out, literally. The room is big and comfortable, and has ample space for your luggage. The door to the balcony does not open though, but the view is pretty nice. Within the hotel lies a hot spring, segregated by gender, where you can relax after a meal. Like all Japanese onsens, no clothes are allowed, and you will have soap and cleanse yourself before entering the springs. It is quite a simple layout, with an indoor onsen and an outdoor onsen. I personally prefer the one outdoors. Would love to come back to this hotel someday for sure!

Excellent place and good ryokan dinner

Reviewed By Linny R

We stayed here for 3 nights and we absolutely love it, our room was pretty big, opposite is the onsen river where you can just jump in with your swim suit, love the onsen of the ryokan too, they have indoor, outdoor and also the private onsen all for yourself, we find nothing to do in the evening around and we pretty happy just to stay in the ryokan and enjoy the onsen and our ryokan dinner, they have a van to drop you off and pick you up if you want to do a short Kumano Kodo, the pilgrimage trail, from here you can take a bus to Yunomine Onsen and try the oldest onsen 1800 years Tsuboya, don’t forget to buy some eggs to boiled and eat after your onsen time in Yunomine, small onsen town. We were really happy with our choice for staying here, staff doesn’t speak English but still try their best to understand us and we’re very appreciate about it, great place, great service and excellent ryokan dinner, the breakfast is not my taste but still happy ?

TERRIBLE STAFF

Reviewed By Livita22

The most unhelp and unfriendly staff I have ever met in Japan. The place itself is nice, but the staff was horrible. The guy who was receiving the guests when we arrive is very impolite. I would not recommend this place to anyone. There are many other options around which you will feel more welcome than this place.

Awesome place! Why bus to Yunomine when you could stay here?

Reviewed By Saskia v

This was a really incredible experience! Probably my favourite stay in Japan so far. I was hiking from Chikatsuyu and got my dates mixed up, so I arrived earlier than my reservation but the owners were very friendly and understanding, and had a room ready for me immediately. I was completely exhausted after the 25km hike that day and it felt so good to just be able to walk a few metres to where I would stay. The rooms were very clean, with tatami mats and SUCH a comfy futon. Since most people decide to bus to Yunomine I had the entire house to myself. I HIGHLY recommend staying here instead. Most restaurants close at 5pm but the owners will prepare you a very reasonably priced dinner if asked. There are public baths right in Hongu town if you need a hot soak, or a bathtub in the house if you are staying there alone! I did the short 2.2 km walk to Yunomine Onsen the next day and spent a lovely morning there before returning to Hongu to give myself more time to explore the shrines and the museum. A great day off in my Kumano Kodo pilgrimage! A word of warning: the cafe where you check in closes around 5pm, like every other restaurant in town. Be prepared to call the owners! There is a payphone immediately as you come out of Hongu Taisha if you don’t have a SIM card.

Superb views and Japanese experience

Reviewed By Robbyt19

The hotel is very nice and very modern. We were greeted wonderfully by the reception staff and shown straight to our room (805). The room was traditional Japanese and very large. It has a magnificent view over the river, has an ensuite and own shower room and of course the wonderful Japanese electric toilet seats. The only drawback for us was the traditional Japanese bed, which we aren’t used to, so sleep wasn’t great due to the hardness of the bed. There are block out shutters, so look for them otherwise you’ll have an early wakening. We had dinner included in our stay and it was amazing. A set meal and also choices from the Japanese smorgasbord. Absolutely delicious. The hotel also has Japanese baths available, both inside & outside. Once again these are amazing and so relaxing. Breakfast was also well up to standard with a great choice. I would absolutely recommend staying at this hotel.

Hot spring is amazing, I had never known such a best spring. Dinner and breakfast are also elaborate and very delicious. Wi-fi may be inadequate, but enough to enjoy nature. Good Onsen, but very normal hotel

Reviewed By wil331

We took the latest bus from Shingu to Watarase Onsen, when we arrive, it was so dark, we had to call hotel to pick up us from the bus stop. The hotel has very big outdoor onsen, it was so nice. but the room had no shower and aslo too cold inside. The breakfast was only so so to compare with other Onsen hotel. Anyway, we like the onsen so much!
