Great setting and location, very average food

Reviewed By PJDG

We stayed here for 3 nights in August 2020. The ryokan is in a great location, and is within comfortable driving range of a number of must see attractions in Akan National Park. The staff are also super friendly and very welcoming. The setting is also beautiful, and very relaxing . We paid a bit more for an upgrade room which was definitely worth it for the extra space and the view (see note below re. the room temperature though). For us however, the food is not a reason to stay at La Vista Akangawa. I guess this comes down to personal taste, but my wife and I found the food to be average at best. We love ryokan meals generally, and we were really looking forward to the meals - but unfortunately the standard was in our opinion surprisingly poor given the other reviews on this site. Maybe we caught them on an off week when the ingredients were not good quality or something similar. They also desperately need to clean the windows of the building - particularly in the restaurant. The beautiful view onto the river is spoiled by how dirty the floor to ceiling windows have become. Such a shame because the view would otherwise have been amazing. Not really what you expect for the prices being charged. The room was great, nice and spacious, with a lovely bath looking out onto the river. The only issue was the temperature - the air con doesn't seem to be particularly effective. When you are paying such high prices you expect the room temperature to be manageable, and the windows to be clean! So in summary, the location and setting is superb, but I don't think that alone justifies the price tag given the average food and other issues mentioned above. We won't be staying here again - i would have given it 2.5 stars, but felt 2 stars was too harsh, so rounded up to 3.

With the comfortable lounge, it has to rate 'Excellent'!

Stayed 2-nights at the end of January when I visited Kushiro to travel on the SL Shitsugen. What a lovely hotel in this quiet rural town. Nice, decent sized room; friendly staff and service, and all at a reasonable price. For me the highlight of my stay was the use of the comfortable lounge on the Ground Floor, just off the Reception area. This was a quality hotel 'Club Lounge' available to all guests at no extra cost. As a near 70-yr old, travelling solo, it was great to arrive back at the hotel and enjoy some quality time in such relaxing surroundings; have a coffee and download the days' photographs from camera to laptop. Without the lounge, I would have easily rated the hotel as 'Very Good'; with the lounge, it has to rate 'Excellent'!

Disappointing language manner by receptionist

Reviewed By Tomoyogini

I stayed for on a business for 12 nights in total. Facility is quite outdated and room temperature is low even though setting was maximum. Hotel kindly provided an electric heater upon my request. However, the language of the receptionist was impolite and lacking respect to the guest. And then I wrote a letter of complaint to the manager. He never replied until I checked out a week later. Staff in general are polite and helpful, it is a real shame this man damaged the reputation. I will never ever come back to this hotel. Only good thing is skilled therapist in a refresh room. I enjoyed her amazing treatment 3 times during my stay.

I had written a review after staying at Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga last June. Since I wanted to see autumn leaves in Hokkaido I went to Lake Akan again in October and naturally I chose to stay at Akan Yuku no Sato Tsuruga again because of the good experience. The room I picked was a standard twin room which was very spacious with a writing desk and from where I could see the lake. Comfy and neat. The buffet dinner with fresh spot prawns among other seafood and sashimi was as impressive as last time. Fully enjoyed it! Eagerly tried the two outdoor onsen as well as another indoor one at the adjacent building. The views at the outdoor ones were unbeatable! I wish I could be there again soon!

much better than I expected

Reviewed By Mish_H50

Incredibly good for a low cost business style hotel. The room was big and comfortable. The onsen was beyond our expectations, especially the fun experience of taking an elevator in the nude (gender segregated!). The breakfast was also impressive- a great choice and all quite tasty. The only bad point, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars, is that they had issues with the parking and the service wasn't very good- the system the staff used was not fair to people standing in line.
