Das wunderschöne Patrizierhaus Gasthaus Hof, welches im 18. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde, liegt mitten im Dorfkern von Appenzell. Das am Landsgemeindeplatz liegende Familienhotel befindet sich in unmittelbarer Nähe der berühmten Hauptgasse. Die farbigen und traditionsreichen Häuser laden jung und alt zum Verweilen und Shoppen ein. Wir Appenzeller sind bekannt für unsere Traditionen. Reviewed By LY3008We spent 2 nights here and loved everything about this lovely place. The hotel is within walking distance to everything, the train station, Co-op's, restaurants and many boutique shops. The restaurant downstairs serves excellent traditional Swiss cuisines, highly recommend. I definitely will stay again when we visit Appenzell next time.

cancelled my reservation without my knowledge
Reviewed By G4263HTmabThe owner of this establishment, Vreni, cancelled my 4 August, 2020 three room reservation 6 days before our stay, without my knowledge. The reservation was made in January 2020. It was for a family trip to celebrate two 50 year, and one 80 year birthday. When I made the reservation, I did receive the emails for each of the rooms, including reservation confirmation numbers. So I knew the reservation was valid. I still have those emails. Fortunately, I called the night before the stay, to request a room upgrade on one of the reservations. That is when I found out about the cancellation. At that point, the three rooms were already re-booked. Vreni told me that she had send an email 6 days before our stay, supposedly asking to confirm the reservation. I did not receive the email. I asked them to re-send that email, for me to see why I had not received it, and to validate what I was told by Vreni. As of today, I still don’t have that email. They also have my cell phone number, but have failed to ever call me, to notify me of the cancellation, nor have they followed up with me on anything since. They did end up coordinating with a different hotel in Gais, at a cheaper rate. That hotel is substandard, so I declined. Vreni stated that there was nothing else they could do. I am not sure why Vreni was not able to make contact with me before she cancelled my reservation, and how she would cancel my reservation without hearing from me personally. I am still waiting on any sort of follow up. Luckily, I was able to book three rooms at a different hotel, last minute, the night before the stay. As far as the email issue, I have been in email contact with an Appenzell Restaurant and a local Taxi service, since January, and have not missed a single email from the two businesses. Those plans came through. I have also been sending emails back and forth with the new Hotel (Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten) that I had to book rooms with last minute. No issues!! Well, because of the issue described above, I ended up finding a Gem, the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten: I highly recommend this Hotel, and I am now glad that the above described incident happened, otherwise I would have missed out on the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten. The Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten accommodated everything I needed, again, last minute. It was around 22:30/10:30PM at night when I called there, the night before my stay. They let me check in early the day of the stay, all rooms were on the same floor, the rooms had the traditional Appenzeller wooden look, everything was very clean, and newly remodeled. All staff was very friendly. They even welcomed us with an arrival reception, drinks and a local snack. At check out, Hotel management came down to thank us personally for the stay. On future visits to the Appenzell region, it will be at the Boutique Hotel Bären in Gonten. Marc Brotschi

Reviewed By laoban173Staff could communicate in English, even tho I think I was the only non German speaker . Room , toilet and bathroom room : spotlessly clean. Asked for a foam pillow. Not a problem. A note ( not criticizing) , was unseasonably warm . No AC . Was a challenge. Nice breakfast buffet . All in all very pleasant.

Breakfast (included in room rate) and dinner (at hotel’s restaurant Little Italy) focuses on fresh, locally sourced and organic food. Our hosts (7th generation hoteliers at the Adler) were consistently happy to share advise on the best local attractions. The hotel offered umbrellas when there was rain and laundry service, when we needed it. The hotel is small and decorated with Appenzell historical artwork, clippings, costumes and artifacts — all charming. Location is close to town center and the train station. Would highly recommend to couples or families looking for local Swiss charm and plenty of Swiss history and hiking.

Very friendly and professional staff all over, surprisingly lots of locals which is great! We enjoed dinner and breakfast at the hotel, both perfect. Service was fast and very professional, even the place was packed. Great wine recommendation! Best spot to explore the area, highly recommended!

Renovated hotel in great location
Reviewed By Urs HWe stayed there as a couple and knew the hotel from before. The place has been competely renovated recently and now really looks great. The staff is very friendly and everything is spotless clean. The area offers a lot of attractions, great place to stay to travel around.

The "Alte Metzg" is the somewhat different accommodation in the village of Appenzell. In the over 500-year-old house, the guesthouse with six lovingly furnished rooms and the hostel with two multi-bed rooms invites you to a relaxing and carefree stay. The entire building was newly renovated in 2021. The cozy parlor offers space to stay, cooking can be done in the kitchen, the large terrace offers space to relax and the in-house sauna contributes toward your well-being. We got baked goods from the bakery, two doors down, and enjoyed the hotel's coffee, jam, and lovely patio. Great price. Easy access from Zurich.

In addition, there are generous rooms for all types of events, and 70 beds offer an inviting place to stay. The dormitory-style bedrooms provide space for a further 28 people.

Reviewed By LittleswansSpent two days with family visiting the Appenzell area. Room is essential and appropriate for a 3 stars family hotel. Personnel is very kind and warm, the young lady speak good English as well. We had dinner at the restaurant, food was really excellent, the menu offers traditional meals and also monthly specials ; we had mussels, out a list of 10+ types that you would not find even at a sea restaurant. Breakfast offers typical choices and it is of good quality as well. We’ll be happy to visit again.
