The 10 best hotels in Basque Country, Spain

August 7, 2022 Darwin Bolte

Situated at the feet of the western Pyrenees near the French border, Spain's Basque country comprises three provinces: Guipúzcoa and the popular beachfront capital of San Sebastian; Viscaya, where capital Bilbao houses the jaw-dropping Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum; and Alava, whose capital Vitoria teems with medieval architecture. Running with the bulls at Pamplona and drinking rioja from area wineries add to the region's exotic romanticism. Travel in early summer and fall to dodge the madding crowds.

The hotel was a very nice surprise. It has an excellent location, spotless clean, helpful staff. Despite the busy area, the rooms are soundproof. Downsides were the sizes of the rooms and the breakfast was pretty standard, nothing special.

Drain fly nightmare

Reviewed By Fulhamsam

I think the guy on the desk saw me walk in (I'd been hiking the Camino) and treated me with slight disdain, I was put in a terrible room on 1st floor. I noticed drain flies in the bathroom (these are flies usually reserved for sewers and portaloos). The shower was a bit dirty and unkept, signs of wear and tear everywhere. I was so tired I didn't bother complaining at first until I was woken up at 5am by loud noises which I think was from staff but maybe other guests. The room was also really hot and the air con didn't work. I had another look in the bathroom and there were even more drain flies gathering. I'd had enough so went to reception. The guy tried to fob me off with inspect repellant but I insisted on moving room, which they did but it seemed the minimum they could have done. The second room was better although still the shower wasn't fully clean. But it was ok, had Nespresso machine at least (why didn't the other room?). Other points to note: - the hotel is at the top of a hill quite a walk from anywhere you'd want to be and overlooks a council estate - the corridors stink of cigarette smoke, particularly the 1st floor, the 6th floor was better but smelt like perfume masking the smoke. - the laundry service is insanely overpriced but I had no choice but to use it. - on positive side the beds are fine, the lobby is decent, and there are water dispensers in corridors. Overall it's not a 4 star hotel and I'm pretty perplexed by the good ratings. I didn't get any apology or anything other than a room change despite being put in a fly ridden room. I stayed in pensions and albergues along northern Spain that were far cleaner and with better staff. This is not worth the money, there are far better options for fractionally more money (and significantly less money to be honest) within the old town.

Great quirky hotel in a perfect location

Lovely setting on the river in the old town and very friendly, helpful staff too. The room we had was a standard room but it was very comfortable and had more room than many city centre hotels! My husband ate breakfast there and said it was excellent once he'd worked out the menu but unfortunately there was little other than fruit and yogurt there for me as I'm gluten free. We gave the hotel feedback on this which was gratefully received and we are confident that this will be addressed.

Loved my stay here! Lovely rooms and design throughout the entire property. The fantastic spa is an extra $30 to use but well worth it. The staff inside the cafe is also wonderful and friendly. Highly recommend. It’s a bit far from the main city but buses make getting to the beach very simple and shouldn’t deter you from booking.

Opened just over a year ago the hotel is located about 20 minutes walk from the old town, but still close to the Guggenheim museum and other attractions. Perfect for drop off or pick up on the airport bus, which stops just outside the hotel. Very modern well appointed rooms. We were given a free upgrade to a junior suite, which was very nice. Very clean. Excellent breakfast. Help yourself to wine and Cava to start the day off. Maria on reception was great. Very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We also stayed at the Catalonia Hotel Catedral in Barcelona ( absolutely perfect t location ), prior to coming here and the service levels were just as good. Would highly recommend this hotel and would happily stay here again.

Good location and overall great hotel

Reviewed By 94caitlinf

We stayed at Lasala for three nights recently. If I could give 4.5 stars I would but since I can’t i did bump it up to 5 since it’s a lovely hotel. The hotel is in a great location to the bars, restaurants, beach and other sights. It’s modern and updated which is nice. The staff was friendly. The rooftop is lovely on a beautiful day. The pool is definitely a bit smaller then the pictures make you believe but since it wasn’t warm enough to swim it wasn’t an issue. Our room was comfortable and updated. I think my one recommendation to a anyone going is either just get the normal double room or if you want bigger then really go up to the highest suite level. We went with the in between level and got a corner double room which was a sitting room plus the room but because it’s laid out in an L shape, having the sitting room was a waste of space. It was cut off from the rest of the room and we never utilized it. It really wasn’t worth the extra money. Also, the bathroom was a bit small and since like most European hotels the shower leaked, the bathroom floor did get quite wet. But nothing a towel on the floor after couldn’t fix.
