Akureyri Hostel HI

Clean hostel

Reviewed By 836anneliesb

I booked a single room with shared bathroom. All information about entrance and code to the room was clear. The bathroom and toilets were clean and well maintained. The only downside for myself was that I expected a room with a sink (as shown on most of the pictures, bot not all apparently). So be aware not to expect a room as on most pictures. Should have specifically asked.

Tremendous - for niceness, location, and value!

Wow. This is VERY good for almost all travellers to Akureyri, and GREAT for single travelers on a budget. I am used to North American hostels. Hafnastraeti Hostel's capsule stay is a great concept. Every bed is private, but they offer as much space as a bunk bed, with a TV to yourself, stereo to yourself, and temperature control. You need not worry about a "bunkmate" who talks on the phone at night, wants to play loud music, or wants to wake early and turn on the light -- your capsule is ALL YOU. The socializing is GOOD. The hosts are an Icelandic family who want guests to feel comfortable. They provide a large dining area, a large lounge, and a nice outdoor deck overlooking restaurants and a kids' play area. Asta and her parents keep the hostel immaculately clean: kitchen dining area and restrooms stay nearly spotless. Finally, they are friendly, and the guests get a sense of warmth and caring. I will return! (Note they have large bed capsules for couples and parents with small children. Very smart.) Mark Greenstein

A clean, modern guesthouse in the heart of Akureyri!

Reviewed By michaelpkim

Great guesthouse located right in the heart of Akureyri with access to shops, restaurants, and pleasant walks throughout the city. Numerous parking accommodations nearby as well, with friendly staff explaining the process. The guesthouse itself is also attached to a restaurant for those wanting to dine without traveling too far, and an elevator in the back of the restaurant up to the rooms. The interior of the guesthouse to the rooms themselves were very clean and modernized, with cute quotes adorning the walls. I had a great view over the city streets as well from my room. Very pleasant for a one night stop during my Ring Road trip. Takk!

Arbot Hostel

Iceland is all about fascinating geography and Árbót Hostel is a great base to start exploring from. The hostel is surrounded by diverse bird life and beautiful nature, and is located on a farm where horses and cattle are bred giving guests a unique opportunity to experience real Icelandic farm life. The facilities at the hostel are basic but you will not be spending your time indoors. Some of the attractions to visit include the beautiful Lake Myvatn area which harbours volcanic activity - the region is covered in lava and interesting geological phenomena like canyons, pseudo craters, hot mud and steam springs. Bath in nature’s own hot tubs in Jarðböðin with temperatures reaching 38-40 degrees. A 10 minute drive away and you will find the nearest town, Husavik, where you can book a great chance to whale watch on fantastic tour boats.

$350 down the drain, AWFUL MANAGEMENT!

Reviewed By YK42589

We've been all over Iceland and stayed in multiple amazing, beautiful places, by far this was the worst experience we've had ever in every way from customer service to the apartment itself (and not just in Iceland). When we came in (keep in mind it is a 5pm check-in which is late in and of itself) they told us it was self check-in and gave us information to get a key from a lock box. We followed the instructions and the key was not there -- we called them confused (after taking our suitcases up a flight of stairs -- there are no elevators), and they said they will call us back in 5-10 minutes after speaking with the manager. We waited with no call back, we had told them we had a car to return by 6pm and there was no street parking available in front of the building, but we didn't hear back until we called them back. They moved us to apparently a "deluxe", but really the same size apartment, and given we didn't see the earlier one there was no way of knowing if it was a "deluxe" upgrade. The new apartment given to us at 5:45pm was a building over and two flights up which we had to walk over ourselves with no "sorry for the inconvenience" from the team. Once there (with two suitcases and bags), we immediately noticed how incredibly hot it was -- the thermostat was set to 27.6 degrees C (82 degrees F). We tried to lower it to no avail, we called them about it and the general ridiculousness of the service and were told the manager was not available to discuss until the week later at the earliest (after 10 minutes of sharing the background). For the thermostat, we were told that people got cold in Iceland and that was normal. After a lot of argument, they sent someone up to tell us they didn't know what to do, that they always set every apartment to 21 degrees C. They told me they understood the frustration, but couldn't do anything to help us other than opening windows (which I had already done). Hour and a half later, every room (2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room) was still 26 degrees C or higher. Thank god for Expedia who helped to rebook us somewhere else that same night (while management claimed they fixed the issues -- we had pictures to prove otherwise). Despite the money lost in late car rentals, groceries bought to cook in our own place, we moved on at cost to us for our last night. Manager still has not called us back... Having never written a negative review, this is the first I feel is necessary for anyone traveling to Iceland. We've shared the same with Expedia and other agencies.

Berg Hostel

Hostel Berg is located in Sandi, Aðaldal, surrounded by magnificent nature and a diverse bird life. The hostel is at the edge of Aðaldalshraun, a lava field that is particularly beautiful; it is also covered with low birch and bushes. For those wishing to explore extraordinary natural sites, Berg hostel is the ideal base. The hostel has a well-equipped kitchen for preparing meals, a common room with TV, Internet access and a garden. The nearest town is Húsavík (20km) so travellers will need to either bring food with them or drive to Húsavík to get supplies. There are not many parts of the country that have as many gems of nature as the north-east of Iceland. In Húsavík you can go whale watching in Skjálfandi bay, known for its vivid marine life, and nearby are the museum at Grenjaðarstaðir, Laxárvirkjun and Goðafoss waterfall.

I found this hostel wonderful for the hidden location and water so close. Rooms ok as well as bathroom. Clean. Nice kitchen and dining room comfortable for groups. Room for 3/4/6. I had the one close to the laundry. Quiet. Didn’t clear if there is laundry or it’s private.

nice stay at a very remote place

Reviewed By Jasmin_Stroppel

the guesthouse is made out of container appartements. This is not really very nice, but practical. The owners tried to make this more cosy by adding a lot of decoration. Not all of it, really fitted. But the rooms are big with fully equipped little kitchen and sofa. But the beds really need a madeup. My hubbies back is not good and he suffered that night. This is a running farm and there is a lot to see, if you are interessted in dogs and sheeps. Owners are very friendly, as was the staff. Dinner and breakfast was very good, with homemade paté and jams. We enjoyed our stay and if you want to explore the Langanes peninsula, this is the prefect spot to start.
