There is also a pop-up store, a space for children, games (billiard, table football, board games), and even 2 bowling lanes to make a nod to the history of the place. Finally, for the more studious, you will enjoy the lounge area or the conference room. And don’t forget to relax at the spa! For your accommodation, you will have the choice: from a single bed in a dormitory to a 2-bedroom, fully equipped, apartment and passing through a whole series of room categories to satisfy both the solo traveler, a couple, a family or a group of friends. The location is great, just next to the main bus station that will take you to the different ski resorts (even in Italy and Switzerland) and to Geneva airport as well. The hotel is located just in a perfect location, just a few minute walk to the town center. Plan B is not a big hotel in size, but it is so packed up with excellent hotel staff. They are so friendly and very helpful. The room is a very good size with a balcony and a million dollar view. A big and comfortable bed and a flat wall tv is just a plus side. Although the breakfast is too simple, they should have more variety dish to choose from. Other than that, I love this hotel and I would strongly recommend you to check it out while you are in town. The room price is very reasonable.

Staff are terribly unfriendly!

Reviewed By pennie_xo

A friend and I recently stayed here for a night. The hostel is a bit basic, but is clean enough. It's up a steep hill, but the view is definitely worth the climb/trek. The front desk is closed for a big part of the day. When we arrived, a female member of staff let us put our luggage in a little room and let us use the shower but couldn't check us in as they'd closed the desk for the afternoon. The staff are (as someone else has mentioned) incredibly unfriendly & often downright rude. My friend & some of the younger guests we'd befriended had planned on going into town for dinner, but due to a thunderstorm, we decided to have the pizza, salad and dessert offered at the hostel for 10euro instead. There was a sign for the menu, but no mention that we had to pre-order, so my friend and I just assumed you turn up, eat and then pay like a normal restaurant. At supper time, we went to the dining room as a group, where the same gaunt looking man was extremely rude to my friend & I, actually shooing us like rats & kicking his feet at us to get out of his dining as we hadnt pre-ordered. Everywhere else was closed, so we couldn't get any food. The gaunt looking man then refused to take our plates to be washed with everyone else's, insisting we had to wash them ourselves. Later that evening, I was in queue to use the computer when the girl before me finished. I clearly asked her if she was finished and she clearly said I could use it as she was done. Half way through checking train times on the internet, the same man rushed up to me, telling me to get off the computer and the same girl who'd move had to use it- even though she was protesting against him. I explained that she said she was finished, and that I was using it and was only checking trains to Marseille. He became really horrible and told me to use my smartphone. I told him that she should use her smartphone or wait! I definitely wont be staying here when I return next summer, and definitely won't be recommending it anyone.

Great hostel not far from Chamonix centre. Some reviews mention cleanliness is an issue but I found both the toilets and showers to be in tip top condition, looked to be cleaned every day. Rooms are small, especially when you get four people and all their ski gear packed in, but you have enough space to do what ya gotta do. The in-bedroom sinks are nice to have. One thing I really missed was having more hooks for wet ski-clothes and towels. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Will return

3 days in Chatel 1861 - ski holiday

Reviewed By Paddyjosb

My friend and I arranged a short ski holiday through sunweb over the New Years period - we could only go on specific dates so choice was limited. Skiing (and apres ski) was the priority so provided we got those things and a roof over our heads, we were sure it would be fine. Having said this, the holiday was, interesting, mainly because information and guidance were just not available. Therefore this review, I hope, will help others staying at Chatel 1861. Firstly, the accommodation is great - absolutely no frills - but clean with friendly staff and even a decent breakfast. However the location is NOT. Chatel 1861 is 2 miles from Chatel where everything is and there are no busses back from the town after 6pm. I didn’t see a single taxi so we were left with no other option than braving the 2 mile walk. For us it wasn’t too bad as the weather bearable (chilly but no snow), however the walk does take 45 minutes even at a brisk pace. A lot of the journey is walking on the road with no pavement. Anyone booking with sunweb, be warned that your lift passes will not be at the accommodation (as normally happens) or at the central lift station (as is described in the paperwork) so make sure you get in touch with your rep asap to track it down. Leonie (our rep) was actually based out of another hotel (2 miles from Chatel 1861) and was unable to drop our passes off to us. We had to get over to him prior to skiing on the first day which ate into skiing time (and not the greatest customer experience). In between Chatel 1861 and the village of Chatel is the Linga lift station, but be warned there is basically nothing going on here after 6-7pm (apart from a pizza place called the Sno cafe which opens late. Although this place is slightly strange as when we popped in on our mammoth walk home on night three, I was sent away as it appeared I had interrupted a family dinner despite the bar being open!!) The main bar in Chatel is the avalanche bar which was pretty uninspiring, no happy hour, no live music, and the beer selection was like a central London pub (camden pale ale, Stella and Guinness). The busses from Chatel 1861 are a bit confusing so make sure you grab a timetable from one of the “ligne A” busses. We found information about where and when they go, very hard to come by. Portes du Soleils is a great ski area but just be aware that a holiday at 1861 will involve a lot of walking and a lot of contusion!!

La Gelinotte

Perfect place to stay in Les Contamines

Reviewed By wherewassarah

Had the most wonderful time in Les Contamines staying in La Gelinotte. It is a family run business and Beatrice and her son welcomed us the moment we arrived by picking us up from the bus stop in the main area of the village. She is so warm, so helpful and so so kind and patient. She brought us into the village to rent our ski equipment then drove us to the ski lifts to buy our passes. The room was very cosy, had an amazing view of the main village and I absolutely loved the place. We had breakfast and dinners here and I thought the food was way better than what we managed to find in the village. It was value for money, close to the free shuttle service bus stop to the ski lifts and it was also possible to walk from La Gelinotte to the lifts (20 minutes). Highly recommend this place. I am certainly looking forward to being back!

Auberge de Jeunesse

Perfect group location

Reviewed By Peter E

It was the perfect place to stay for a mixed group of all ages, singles, families, young and old. The rooms are clean and simple with very few bunk beds. Most have washbasins and showers attached. The dining room has a spectacular view down valley to the town 3 km away with all-inclusive catering to match. The lunch is brilliant and easy to return to since the hostel is virtually on the piste in the middle of the ski area, though a packed lunch alternative is bookable the evening before. A varied afternoon tea is laid on at 5.15pm. There is an attractive low priced bar and a comfortable lounge adjoining, with a welcome party and the occasional bar entertainment such as karaoke, folk singing or disco complementing ‘quieter chat and Scrabble ’ evenings. All this and the 3 or 4 course dinner makes the evenings nearly as enjoyable as the skiing. With a discounted lift pass and organised ski hire (optional) a very attractive package is offered in this delightful and varied medium sized ski area.

great hostel for two English girls who didn't speak much French!

We recently stayed here and had a wonderful time. We met locals from Chamonix, Alaskans, Finnish and French staying here! Every night there was a band or DJ in the main bar which was a great opportunity to socialise. Very helpful staff who were patient with our poor French language Also a HUGE discount on ski passes! I would highly recommend over other hotels in Chamonix having stayed in a few.
