Hostel Sol

Unlike other hostels, hostel Sol is astounding for its top quality hotel-like accommodation. Most of the 40 rooms in our hostel have their own bathroom and all rooms are air-conditioned, equipped with a TV, safe, keycards, lockable wardrobes and extremely comfortable beds with anti-allergen bedding. Wireless Internet access is available in all hostel facilities and it`s free! Private parking, which is available within the facility, requires a reservation and the town parking is nearby.

Do not be put off by the exterior

I started the Intrepid Balkans cycling trip here. I must admit, on arrival, I thought the place was going to be a kip as the exterior isn't too promising. However, the rooms were fantastic. Quiet, super mattresses and powerful shower with modern furnishings and great wifi. Highly recommended.

Sinistaj Rooms

Nightmare before Christmas

Reviewed By Chloe H

Be prepared for things to turn very ugly after the warm welcome if money comes up in conversation. In the reviews you will also see evidence of xenophobia and knee-jerk aggressive needless evictions You will be living in a residential apartment building that is a old high-rise council looking building. The apartment is old but nice inside but the building itself needs a lot of work. The rooms are small and have limited space to move around. This once was and still is a family home. You will be living with 2 elderly people that own the apartment. The apartment has been split into a private home and a Airbnb property. If you are a couple move on now or if you want to stay more than a few days book something else. Rooms cannot be lock-handle released from the inside, for fire safety. You can only do this with a bolt-lock meaning if there is an electrical fire in your room you will lose valuable escape time and could probably die or be injured. In the middle of the night someone actually walked into our room as we didn’t want to bolt-lock the door for safety reasons. No apology was given and if we were naked or making love it would have been a horrific experience. Couples beware. You need to pay €7 to use the washing machine and €3 to cook. For the price of this £52 per night room in a residential house these charges make a mockery of this policy. It’s placed this high as to dissuade you to not disturb the owners of the house as this is actually their home. The hot water will be turned off at night even if you are in the middle of a shower. You can only have a warm shower in the morning where you will be waiting if the rooms are full. They do not want you to take the air-con any lower than 26c this will only be 3-4c less than outside temperature. They wrote 26 on the air con controller after a few days of our stay and took away a blanket to force us to sweat through the night then get a chill when the temperature dropped and raised throughout the night which happens as Dubrovnik is on the coast. Be prepared to catch a small chill as you won’t be able to moderate you room temperature even if it raises or drops outside. We had to use towels as our blanket was taken away from us. If you feel uncomfortable and want to leave early the attitude of the home owners will change dramatically. Money is a very touchy subject for the man of the house. First he will make an agreement with you to stay and extra night. Don’t agree to that and move on immediately this is a ploy to keep more money. They don’t care for your comfort they just care about how much money you are worth to them. The air-con and hot water ban will continue regardless of how long you stay or how uncomfortable they make your stay. The apartment is on a massive hill at the city end of Dubrovnik. You will need to walk up around 12-14 stories of stairs to get to the apartment from the marina. Either that or get a bus or taxi each night. Dubrovnik is as equal to London in cost, walking is always the preferred method. Get ready to get sweaty and knackered at this address, everyday. This isn’t mentioned on the ad either. An estimated 12-14 stories of stairs, unless you pay, is a huge amount of stairs to hide on the advert. A bus will cost you £3 one way for 2 people so thats £6+ per day for two people, depending where you go, so that’s almost £100 for a long holiday. It’s a no brainer to walk. Taxis will be more than double that. Very, very expensive city and a very difficult residential block of flats to get to. Their rules their home. If you want to have the freedom of basic hotel comforts do not book this you will be massively disappointed as we were and the rest of the disappointed people on here who we never listened to and now really regret. If you are a student or a single traveller and don’t mind cold showers, high air-con temps, blanket confiscation, long tiring stair hikes, high washing costs, inconvenient cooking costs, no washing or drying items in room, basin or shower then this is a good non-cheap but kinda affordable for Dubrovnik option. Two or three days is as long as I would book here any longer and the house owners will turn against you as you will want comforts they don’t want to provide and make you feel uncomfortable. Thanks for reading and I hope I have saved you the aggravation and discomfort we endured. There are plenty of better places in town. Apartment Smiles is Magnificent with everything missing in Sinister-ja flat freely available with plenty more conveniences and no stress. Dump this room now, it’s horrific. Unless you don’t care about comfort or basic hotel needs then go ahead press that button. The view is good, that’s about it, but by no means a sticking point just a nice to have.

Not Good

Reviewed By Docmus13

After nearly an hour and 20 minutes of the taxi driving us the 20 minute trip from the airport to the correct area and then around and around trying to find this place he finally dropped us at the end of an alley and indicated it was 'somewhere down there'. The area reminded me of the favelas of Brazil; set on steep mountain side, terribly lit and extremely daunting to first time visitors. Our first experience, a few doors down from our destination, was to be attacked by a neighbours dog; having to get rid of it by waving our luggage at it. Eventually we found the 'Guesthouse' where we were greeted by what appeared to be 'The Landlady' with the words, "You're late..!". After explaining that it had taken an hour to find the place we were shown to our room. A delightful little place full of character such as mouldy food in the old fridge that sat on the veranda alongside the rattly old fan that substituted for the air-con. Or the friendly insects that adorned the floors and paper thin mattress and the inoperable lightbulbs which allowed a night time view over the alleys of the Frevela. By the discription we had read; nice quiet area of town, magnificant views etc etc we were certainly not greeted by this in fact quite the opposite. We are not fussy, just wanting a budget 'Hang-your-hat' hotel close by all the GOT scenes areas, however this was below this and the 'Landlady' had a very strange customer relations attitude to say the least. We ended up spending just the first night as it was too late to change, and then changing hotels the following day. We felt quite intimidated by the Landlady and gave her the reason, when asked why we were leaving, that the 'Hotel' was too far out. However the icing on the cake was after returning home and leaving a review on Bookings.com she sent a Whatsapp message directly requesting tha we remove the review! Of course we would, after our experience, not recommend this accommodation.

The most wonderful hostel ever!

The house is beautiful, cozy and feels like a home. The stuff honores the ambience by keeping it super clean. I wish my own bathroom would also be cleaned at least twice a day! Mateja is the sweetest hostel manager I ever met. Any questions you may have will be answered, every issue solved. Then, when you're stepping out of the front door, you find yourself in this stunning historic place. Perfect location! They even organize activities with the guests. I loved the sunset tour to an abondoned hotel...incredibel sunset! It's the only (because the most lovely) place where I want to be when I come back to Dubrovnik. Thank you! Vidimo se! Léon

Very nice and helpful staff, basic room

Reviewed By hjamolenaar

On arrival Bega sat down with us to explain where (not) to go in Dubrovnik. From restaurants to things to do, which bus to take where etc. All advice was based on value for money, so we adjusted the plans to our liking. But, as we were there for 4 days Bega’s advice helped us getting the most out of it. We had the last room, which was very basic. Two single beds, a wardrobe, a shower and toilet, all cramped in a small area. As we were out almost all the time, this didn’t bother us too much, but it could be a big disappointment for others!

Pleasant experience

Reviewed By Olha_letstravel

Pleasant hostel experience! I stayed there one night only, and have not spotted any major disadvantages, so my review is going to be super positive. To start with, their location is one of the best. The main bus station, where airport shuttle bus brings you to, is 7 minutes walking from the hostel; public bus station is right in front of the main entrance. If you are up for walking, in 20 minutes you'll reach the Old City, in 30 minutes you'll find Sunset beach in Babin Kuk area. There are small grocery stores right downstairs, and a big supermarket 5 minutes away, as well as few bars and restaurants. Administrator Sanja is a super welcoming, and willing to assist her guests. She didn't just offer me any bed according to my booking, but checked all options available so that to offer me the best one. Together with bed the hostel is providing free bed sheets, towel, quite a spacious wardrobe with lock. Every room has balcony with lovely view, air conditioner, mirror and nightstand, few power sockets next to each bed. Accommodation is mixed, no only girls/guys rooms. Common area is relatively small, however I didn't notice a crowd there. There 2 separate lady shower rooms, toilets, ans sinks, likewise for guys. Hot water is 24/7. Free washing machine for guests disposal. Kitchen is well equipped with fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, small stove, plenty of kitchenware and cutlery, and sink with hot water, but be prepared to see rather tiny space. Spacious balcony with splendid sea view, sunbeds, dining tables, and terrace furniture compensates that though. Environment inside was very quite and peaceful, no curfew time, night time guard is present in the hostel.

Best host ever!

We spent an unforgettable week at Željka's place. She went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. First, she picked us from the bus station during her lunch break and took the time to explain us how to get around the city. She offered us ice cream and orahovac and recommended places to visit and restaurants (all her recommendations were amazing). She even took us to the bus station when we left. The house was lovely, our room was spacious and everything was squeaky clean. Milk, coffee, tea, bread, jam, cereals for breakfast were available. There is a bus stop very close, so it is very easy to get the old town in about 10-15 minutes. Last but not least, the view is absolutely amazing.
