Mixed

Stayed here for four nights in May Paid for a 6 bed mixed form which was in a separate building two doors down (no problems here) Decent stay - the room was a bit hot but nothing too bad and the beds comfortable (see below) - the breakfast (pancakes, lemonade and coffee) was free flowing and tasty The staff were mixed in terms of helpfulness but a special shout out to the owner who was extremely friendly, helpful, and funny Whilst no social events are being put on yet because of, yes you guessed it, covid (even though there are no restrictions at all in DC) I found people to chat to every evening in the main reception area As a requirement to check out, you have to strip your bed when I stripped my mattress cover I discovered that it was absolutely disgusting - so many stains of different colours - vile in the extreme - and really clouded my view of the hostel - be wary of this

Awful experience. The place is falling apart. It was not what I had expected. Not sure what I expected but bunkbeds and taking my shoes off to come inside seemed odd. The guy who runs the place is very creepy. Long story short, anywhere else would have probably been better.

Diplomatic Management

Deceptively Good, Flaws all too apparent

Reviewed By Boyofthefuture

Most of the experiences I've had are pretty decent. But this one experience I had was so bad (service-wise) that I really have to write this review. Perhaps it was a change in management that spiraled into such a host of issues. Pros: Pretty decent location: 15minutes from the metro, quick to town. Livable Conditions Slightly comfortable (make-shift) bed Seemingly safe neighbourhood, with a 24h store nearby Decent guests - but this shouldn't be a pro or con since it isn't within the hostel's control, but it is only one of the few pros I can scavenge out of this property. Cons: Far too many Poor parking issues: It is hard to park anywhere around this property. Don't bother. Run-down facilities: Toilets have faulty lighting, in lower-than-average condition, the living space seems like there wasn't much bother to have it maintained, stairs creak in an "under-maintained" way. Air-conditioning constantly breaks down. Basically, the entire hostel looks slightly run-down and ill-maintained, and the management can't be bothered. The only plus could be the beds aren't too affected by this. Atrocious Management: The heart of the problem. The management isn't bothered and cares far more about watching television or celebrating than their guests, to the point that they make their guests wait for everything, even check-in! (without bother to place a permanent staff in the hostel. They make you wait for them till they are probably BORED with everything else in their life). Don't even think they will help you if you get a heart attack in their hostel until their show is over. False Advertising: The Management isn't hesitant to squeeze 8 or even 10 individuals into a supposed "6 person" bedroom. Individuals are even placed on couches and make-shift beds. Payment: The management, due to their laziness (as stated above) can't even be bothered to be honest in their payment. If this is the last place in DC that you must stay in (beyond the streets), do pay with a credit card, cause you could probably forget about getting your change back in cash as the management is far too lazy to even give you your change. To summarize: Unbelievably terrible staff, slightly poor conditions, false advertising, and pretty good location, with an average neighbourhood. Verdict: Go find somewhere else, unless you really have no choice. Honestly, it's not like I can't live in such conditions, but for the amount and the way this hostel is marketed, it is not only horribly deceptive, but you could definitely find FAR BETTER OPTIONS out there. It is such a shame that such a good property has gone to the dogs. The hostel could have been so much more than it is, especially being a small hostel that seems to shout "coziness and family". However, the recalcitrant, obstinate staff/owners who probably couldn't even give a damn about their guests, have only themselves to blame for the atrocious experience the hostel gives. Such a waste.
