Beautiful, fern-lined grounds, great location right next to the national park, and excellent service. We stayed in the Pineapple Obama cottage which was delightful, but the other buildings looked equally charming. Would definitely recommend!

Pretty Property Didn't Meet Expectations

Reviewed By Chelsea W

I stayed here on a meditation retreat. Overall the experience as good. However, for the price there were a few things I was disappointed with. My bathroom shower had an ant problem for the duration of my stay and it was not addressed when my room was cleaned like requested. The pool area was cleaned due to our requests, not on a regular basis as needed. Items around the resort need updating, like outdoor cushions and some chairs. Breakfast daily was included in our stay, but it again did not meet expectations. It was the same food 6 days in a row. Overall, still a great stay, just didn't meet my expectations for the price I paid to stay there.

TERMITE AND COCKROACH INFESTATION - DO NOT STAY HERE!

Reviewed By 55marissac

We found this place on hotels.com and let me tell you, there is barely any lodging available in the south side of Big Island! We didn't have many options so we went ahead and booked this place. DO NOT STAY HERE: 1. The address was wrong. Weirdly, the owner somehow saw us arriving and started following us as we drove in circles trying to find the place. Not sure how she knew it was us since we didn't give an ETA or what kind of car we'd be in. Suddenly, we heard honking behind us as this silver civic started tailgating us. We were wondering wtf their problem was, so we pulled over to the side to let them pass, and she pulled up along us asking if we're looking for cottages. Turns out she was the owner and told us to follow her. Felt like we were bound for a horror movie slaughtering. 2. Should have known when we pulled up, she said it was ready for us since 10am that day, but there was still a van parked out front and people blowing leaves in the front. She said that she texted me the new address, but I never received anything from her. She said that the address on the GPS was her old office or something. I felt like something important like an address would be beneficial in receiving so not sure why she did not just call or email me if she did not hear back from me in the text message. She gave us a tour of the place and left. There were still clothes or something running in the washing machine, so we felt a little uneasy knowing someone will be coming in to grab it and we left our luggage in the place. The cottage itself was HUGE - like, 3 bedrooms with a total of 10 beds or so! There were only 2 of us, so it kind of spooked us being in such an old place. 3. Here's where it gets bad...there were ROACHES AND TERMITES in the house!!! I get it, we're in Hawaii and it's bound to happen, but the bathroom had CLUSTERS of them on the floor and tiny ones flying around in the bathroom! We found dead roaches hidden behind furniture in the living room too. Even laying in bed on our phones, we would see something little fly by. If we wanted to deal with bugs, we would have just saved our $100+ and went camping for free!! 4. Speaking of bathroom, there was NO HOT WATER! We could barely shower because the cold water was so unbearable so late in the night. When I had contacted hotels.com, the rep reached out to the owner and her excuse was that we're in Hawaii and there are bounds to be bugs, and that sometimes people leave food out which attracts the termites. I thought they were attracted to wood? Also, if the house was CLEANED, why would they have enough time to be attracted to such food and/or why would it be in the bathroom -_- As for the cold water, she blames us for not calling her to complain. First of all, it was late in the night, second of all we were already butt naked freezing cold in water. Did she want us to call her (which we did but nobody picked up!!) and what, move us to a whole new cottage?? Sounds to be a bigger inconvenience. In the end, she refused to issue us any sort of refund on her part. DO NOT STAY HERE!! MAJOR HEALTH CONCERNS! Take the extra drive and stay somewhere, anywhere if you have to, just not here!

When Kauai was shut down for Covid last year, Lori Parsonson, owner of Coastline Cottages, pleaded with us to roll our prepaid (including cleaning, tax etc.) VRBO booking forward once the island reopened, rather than request a refund under VRBO Covid procedures. In an effort to be supportive at a difficult time, we agreed to do so. For the last several weeks we have been trying to reach Parsonson/Coastline, but they are not returning calls or emails. We can be understanding and flexible if Coastline is having financial difficulties, but there is no excuse for not communicating with us.

Aloha Cottage

We offer two distinctly different cottage rentals; The Thai Tree House and The Aloha Cottage. Both of these romantic maui vacation cottages, along with the main house, are situated on five pristine acres of a pastoral private upcountry, Maui estate. We strive to provide each of our guests with the finest vacation experience within Upcountry Maui and beyond. The Aloha Cottage is adorned with unique Balinese treasures and The Thai Tree House is uniquely decorated with marvelous items from Thailand. Each cottage was custom-built and designed around these two exotic themes while also maintaining an authentic Hawaiian feel to their settings. There's really nothing else like it on Maui. Privacy abounds with each cottage! The design and placement of these two cottages on the property were carefully planned so that would be ample distance away from each other and also that both cottages remain a good distance away from the main house. In fact each cottage is well over 120 yards away from any dwelling in an effort to provide you with an air of seclusion and independence.

Surprising Disappointment

Reviewed By verbic7

We had stayed three times previously at The Thai Tree House- what was a magical, romantic and overall impressive environment. The most egregious problem was a non-functioning toilet. This stay was for three nights,Saturday-Tuesday. We reported the problem on Sunday and was told the tank was "notoriously slow" on filling. Well sometimes hours to fill was unacceptable. During the day on Monday and again on Tuesday morning we drove into Makawao to use facilities there. It was more than uncomfortable to put soiled toilet paper in baggies. Part of the charm was the dense foliage. It obviously hadn't been trimmed in a while because in the wind the banging and scraping against the roof, windows and cottage sides was quite distracting at night. Normally the breeze and wind were pleasant. We couldn't adhere to the recycling policy because one of the two garbage cans was overflowing. These problems were reported to management and we were told they would respond with some kind of compensation, but haven't heard a word. By far the worst part was not having the use of a reliable toilet during our $900 plus stay. Bob and Susan

Green Acres Cottages

A unique place to relax.

Reviewed By Randy B

My wife and I really enjoyed our two week stay here and have to agree with the other recent posts. We booked this location based on other reviews and I was actually concerned if this was a real location based on the price...to good to be true was my concern, our two week stay cost only $76 per night all fees included... Our hosts were great, fresh squeezed orange juice, freshly baked bread waiting for us...very relaxing and laid back. The accomodation itself is as described, but be aware that it is old, slightly run down and the lack of upkeep is showing. Several items in the kitchenette were disgusting and we actaully threw out a few items and replaced them with new ones, including the shower curtain...several more items should also be discarded like the toaster oven...I would not use it. The mattress is shot and uncomfortable, was so nice to get home to our own bed... There in lies why I am having trouble writing this review...you just can't beat the price. Yet the low price is probalby why they don't have the cash to properly take care of the place. I really don't know if all of the problems I see with the place are intentionally allowed to stay like that to keep the price down or if the owners just don't see the problems. For example, the hot tub was not usable while we were there, sign on it saying out of order. I was there for two weeks, no repairman ever came to fix it. Several guests have mentioned the ants...they are everywhere...this is a problem that can be taken care of with a little effort. The location of this property is right on the main road which makes it easy to get to, but then you have the road noise to listen to all the time and it is a very busy road. There is nothing nearby, so you will have to drive to get to anything and traffic is a problem...I put 1,000 miles on the rental car and you will spend most of your time at about 35 mph. Prices in the local stores are all high....get use to paying 5.50 for a dozen eggs, 4 buck a gallon for gas, $6 for a loaf of bread...but good news....beer is the same price...you can get a 12 pack for 10 bucks.....go figure. I really liked the place, like the owners, despite its issues I would stay here again.

Laid back Kauai

Reviewed By ickypicky

We visited Kauai (first time in Hawaii) at the end of November/2021. Timeshare points allowed us to snag a 2bedroom/2bath cottage at the Makai Cottages in Princeville. The cottages are spacious, to say the least; each one is a stand alone unit. There is one parking spot per cottage. It borders the Makai Club Golf course originally designed by Robert Trent Jones and updated in 2010. However, we don't golf. The cottages have been somewhat renovated as the bathrooms are modern and lots of hot water was available for the 2 shower set up in the master. The rest of the cottage not so modern. I estimated a build of mid 70's; jalousie windows and wood louvered windows with no a/c and no heat. Plenty of fans but no heat. It's Hawaii what are you talking about heat?? It was in the 50's and humid our last 2 nights. The windows do not keep out the cold. The kitchen had mid 70's cabinetry, decent shape but a few loose hinges; the washer and dryer (not a combo but not full size) worked. Noisily but a door closed the noise out. We were there to sleep, clean up, and rest. Princeville is way up north on the island and restaurants are few; nearest grocery store was less than one mile away. Did we enjoy it? Was it worth the cost? Sure, timeshare was paid off 10 years ago. You can rent these outside of the timeshare continuum. Roosters by the way are plentiful. You cann look them up. They look you up every day. Early. Very very early.

Good and Bad

Reviewed By ERMTravels

We stayed in the Hana Cabana in March 2018. This is a rustic property in the Hawaiian jungle, so just be aware. You will deal with a lot of critters. Tons of geckos, mosquitos, pincher bugs and more. My husband was bit/pinched by a centipede IN THE BED in the middle of the night. We saw it but could not catch it in time before it disappeared. We tore the bed apart looking for it and never found it. Afraid to go back to sleep knowing it was still there, we ended up sleeping in our car. At midnight in Hana, you can’t just go check into the “Holiday Inn.” Just understand this is what you sign up for when staying in an airy structure in the jungle. The lack of hot water for two days was also an issue as described in other posts. Wifi never worked and no cell coverage.
