The 10 best Campgrounds in Kansas, United States

April 18, 2023 Emerita Lamoureux

See a buffalo up close, live like a cowboy for a day on a working cattle ranch or visit a stagecoach stop on the Sante Fe Trail are just a few of the many vacation experiences possible in this state in America’s heartland. You’ll love the wide-open spaces and the opportunities to engage in a variety of one-of-a-kind experiences in this marvelous state, which has the largest segment of true tallgrass prairie remaining in the U.S. Regardless of where you visit: a major metropolitan area like Kansas City, a college town like Manhattan or Lawrence or engaging places like Wichita, Dodge City and Salina, there are a wide array of attractions and sights nearby. If you want to familiarize yourself with cowboy culture, visit the Boot Hills Museum in Dodge City, dine on all-you-can-eat barbeque and hear songs of the American Cowboy at Diamond W Chuckwagon Supper in Wichita or explore the Dickinson County Heritage Center in Abilene, which has dance halls, gaming rooms and 32 saloons. For outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching and other activities, three of the state’s most popular parks are: Cheney State Park near Wichita; Scott State Park near Scott City and Tuttle Creek State Park near Manhattan.

Nice place

We stayed here for one night passing through. We wish we could make reservations online but you have to call to reserve a spot. The contactless check in was really great. We liked the fact that the park was all concrete with a locked security gate. The cable channels were good as was the wifi connection. The fenced dog run area was large and all of the grounds in the park were really clean. We had spot 5 which was a pull through and easy to get into and out of but it was right across from the playground. It seemed like there are 5 or 6 kids that live in the rv park and ran around screaming until the sun went down. So request a spot further away from the playground if you don’t want to listen to unsupervised children screaming for hours. But I realize that is a parenting issue not a park management issue.

I have stayed at this KOA 4 times going and coming from camping trips with friends from St Louis. This is one of those places where you know what you're getting the price is right and it is somewhat of an oasis in the middle of the plains. It is always very busy, Ray is very friendly, and it is always very quiet. It should be noted that the wifii isn't strong enough to reach the sites at the far end of the campground, like where the tent sites are. The bathroom is clean.

Great place...great people!

Reviewed By Heyitsnotthem

Let me tell you my story. I was out on my first motorcycle camping adventure, and decided Dodge City was the destination because of the weekend races. Jèsus, the park manager, set me up in a nice spot where I could pitch my tent. After an evening at the race track, I was back in camp around 10:30, when one of those Kansas Plains rain storms opened up. I was in my cheap little $25 Big 5 tent getting soaked (it leaked like a sieve) and thrashed by wind, when my phone rang. It was Jèsus the owner/manager. He was calling because he was worried about me out there in a tent in the storm. He offered to move me into the Bunkhouse for the night...for free. He even came and got me in his truck and gave me a ride over so my sleeping bag and effects wouldn't get even wetter then they already were. Now, mind you, he had already gone home for the night, and drove all the way back to the park to help me out. Wow! Talk about service! These people REALLY care about the people that stay with them. The next day I threw the tent in the trash, and went to the office to change my accommodations to another night in the Bunkhouse. I offered to pay the difference for the previous night in the Bunkhouse, but Jèsus wouldn't have it. He said it was a favor because he was worried about me out there in my crappy tent...and he doesn't charge for favors. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it now. THAT is why I like to vacation in Kansas, and THAT is why I'll stay at the Gunsmoke RV Park again. GREAT PLACE...GREAT PEOPLE!

This is a great little park! The camp hosts were fantastic, helpful and friendly. The facilities were exceptionally clean and well maintained. It was right off of the Interstate and exactly what we were looking for. This is definitely a place that we will use the next time we are driving across I-70.

Love this place!

Reviewed By isaidyee

We’re on a cross country trip from NY to UT, and we came across this park in KS on the way home. By far our favorite rv park of the whole trip. Very clean, easy to navigate, playground, CLEAN private bathroom with shower like you would have at your own home, really nice laundromat, and just that classic mid-west-old-school family owned place. RIGHT off I-70 too. We loved it so much and would definitely stay again!!

Good overnight stop to get somewhere else.

Reviewed By Jeff H

Cute and clean KOA. Good place to stop overnight. Right off the highway as you expect from a KOA. Pool was small but did the job. The staff was very friendly. This KOA doesn't have a ton of amenities but it's not that type of KOA. It's a pit stop. Not a destination. As with most KOA, the cabin beds are very uncomfortable. Bring an air mattress or something to put on top. That is not a knock on this campground. Its true with most of the basic KOA's.

Great RV Park in the Wichita Area

Reviewed By AzuriteKey

Easy to get in and out of. Mellow. The people running it are friendly & helpful. My partner & liked the restroom setup. The showers are roomy & have plenty of privacy. Things stayed consistently clean throughout our stay. We also had some extra excitement during our visit, severe weather.. we actually watched a tornado form to the east of us… yikes! So we all went to the storm shelter and thankfully after a bit of very loud hail things calmed down. If I was in the area I would definitely consider staying at this park again.
