Shinyu gets an Excellent from my family.

Reviewed By SandBTokyo

We decided to stop in Suwa to break up a long drive back to Tokyo. Shinyu looked very good and the price was reasonable. The hotel is renovated and gives a nice modern spa hotel atmosphere. The greeting at the hotel is very nice and the lobby area is beautiful. We felt very welcomed when we arrived. Our room was facing the lake. It was Japanese style with tatami and futons. Nice room, nice view. The public bath was nice. Not huge but felt very good. They have an indoor bath, small outdoor bath, a sauna and a cold bath. Dinner was great, as was breakfast. They were both courses and delicious. Service? Well, this is what makes all the difference. When we book hotels we need to detail my daughter's food allergies which are serious. For this trip we had booked many hotels in a row and for some reason when we booked Shinyu and checked-in we just forgot. It was our fault and when we sat for dinner we saw her prepared meal that she obviously could not eat. The staff at Shinyu didn't miss a beat. The didn't make a big deal about it. No stress. The quickly adjusted and made a wonderful dinner for my daughter and also prepared for her breakfast in similar fashion. Wonderful. Such great service. Maybe the building isn't perfect. But the service was perfect. Shinyu was our last stop on our trip and we left with a smile. Shinyu gets an "Excellent" from my family.

A hidden ryokan

Reviewed By kea12_12

Inside the (modern facade) hotel is a hidden ryokan and good for a first time visit. Small hot spring areas are available in the hotel, dinner was a surprise as part of the package with a Kaiseki set menu and Yukata appropriate to wear. The room was Japanese style which was comfortable and clean. The common bar area seemed to be smoking but this did not bother us in the room. Staff were super friendly and one in particular spoke good English which was helpful to us to explain the Onsen. If you are vegetarian you can ask ahead. Some parts of dinner were adapted ( and I had forgotten to request this) so it may be easier with notice. During our stay there were special fireworks over the lake and it was quite a fun place to be. Nice service and a good local experience. Thank you.

Lovely hotel and satisfying.

Reviewed By Hiro7n

I stayed in a room with an open-air bath. It was clean and the hot spring water was soft and made my skin smooth. We also visited the large bathroom downstairs, which was spacious and had nice spring water. Dinner was prepared in a separate private room. Again, this was a nice Japanese-style room with a relaxed atmosphere. The food was very tasty from the starters and I felt happy. And the staff were very helpful, both at the front desk and in the restaurant. She saw me off when I left, and at that point she pointed to the roof of the hotel and said, "Look. I looked at the roof and saw a real heron perched on it. And when we got in the car and started driving away, the heron flew away too. That was the last service at the Saginoyu(Heron’s Bath).

Traditional Japanese-style hotel

Reviewed By Sarah L

http://www.hamanoyu.co.jp/ Stayed here one night on 15 May 2015, with a group of 26 people. This is a traditional artistic Japanese-style hotel. The overall interior of the hotel is nice. The lobby is nice, shop located in the lobby is small. Our room (number 707, Japanese-style with twin beds on tatami-mat) was large and nicely decorated. Toilet and shower were separated. Toilet and bathroom were both small. The Yukata was beautiful. We can see the Suwa Lake from our room -- nice view. Pillow and bed were quite hard for me, as the thin bed was on tatami floor. All guidance and remote controls (TV & AC) were in Japanese, except for the Fire & Earthquake precautions was available in English. Cups and green tea were available in the round box near the Flat TV, while refrigerator was located near the sofa near the window. You can find glasses in the cabinet near the refrigerator. The hotel provided indoor and outdoor hot spring (onsen) pools. The outdoor onsen opened from 5 to 0 AM, while the indoor opened 24 hours. Sauna was available only for men, while steam-bath was available only for women until 9 PM. I tried the indoor onsen in the morning. There were 3 indoor hot spring pools. The onsen area and pools were clean. Small towels were available both in the guest room and in the onsen area. Vanity room with body lotions and face creams, comb, hair-dryer were available in the onsen area -- nice. Lemon - Green Tea drink available in the onsen waiting area. Try the onsen, if you stay here. Dinner set was delicious, especially the hot bowl soup. Breakfast was also served in Japanese bento (box) set, which was OK. Overall, I enjoyed staying here, it's a beautiful and clean hotel. However I found difficulties in using the AC remote control, as it was in Japanese. Free WiFi only available in the public area.

Fantastic Stay at this Hot Spring Hotel

Reviewed By Knightwind

Location: The hotel is located in walking distance from JR Kami Suwa station (about 10-minute walk). It is possible to drag luggage from train station to hotel, but consider taking taxi if you don't mind spending some money. I don't think this hotel provides shuttle service to/from train station. Service: Kami-Suwa is a hot spring town that is under the radar from foreign visitors, so it is totally understandable that hotel staff could not speak English. In fact, only one lady in the front desk could speak a little bit English. Nevertheless, their service was hospitable and genuine. The biggest language challenge was the introduction to hot spring hotel etiquette by hotel staff (an old lady with zero English skill). We frequently misunderstood her words, but at the end the body language worked out. Dinner service, breakfast service, room service, and hot spring service were all very considerate. I was pleasantly surprised that they offered free beer, free tea, and/or free ice cream sweets at the entrance of hot spring area (located on top floor). They provide a few Wagashi in the room for guests. Food: We had the "Suhaku set dinner" (朱白膳) as part of the half-board package. The food pictures on their official website looked like you can hardly fill your stomach, but in reality, it was a 12-course meal, and by the time we finished the full dinner, we were very full. The meal was spectacular. The breakfast (7-course meal) was also amazing and very filling. They use a lot of local food for meals (local rice, local beef, local fish, local miso soup) Overall: This was one of the best hot spring hotels I stayed for my trip. I would recommend this hotel to foreign visitors who can speak some Japanese and have previous experience staying at traditional hot spring hotels (so that you know the etiquette). This happened to be my first ever hot spring hotel experience, and we spoke very little Japanese, so there were quite a lot of communication challenges.

Fantastic in every way

Reviewed By KI-NRT

We stayed at Sui Suwako in late October as part of a long Honshu road trip, and we couldn't be more pleased with our experience at Sui Suwako. It's a hybrid Ryokan/Hotel of sorts... it's a 4-story building that lacks a grand entrance or massive property grounds. But it offers rooms that are modern and comfortably appointed, the Omotenashi hospitality of a family-run Ryokan, an onsen bath in each and every room (as well as a terrific rooftop co-ed bath) as well as a terrific Kaiseki dining experience. Given its location in the middle of Nagano, it also serves as a good overnight rest spot if you're coming to/from places such as Tokyo, Fuji, Nagano, the Hokuriku Region, Tsumago/Magome and Karuizawa. Sui Suwako is located on the banks of the enormous Lake Suwa ("Suwa-ko" in Japanese), although there's a somewhat busy road as well as a small park/boardwalk between the property and the lake itself. It's not in the most secluded of locations, but upon entering the building and walking into the reception/common area you'll find that Sui Suwako is an oasis of tranquility. The furnishings and decor are a combination of traditional and modern - liberal use of brightly-colored wood, large windows facing a small yet charming garden, the earthly tones of the furnishings and a smattering of Shoji (dividers that consist of white, semi-translucent sheets on a lattice frame) lend an airy, homely feel. The same is true in the rooms themselves - it's a country home-style feel that gives it a warm, inviting vibe to the entire place. There are a total of 8 rooms (2 on each of the 4 floors) with two slightly different room categories. We choose to stay in the larger of the two types, dubbed the "Wide Japanese/Western-style Room with Open-air Hot Spring Bath, 75m²." It's slightly larger than the standard rooms, although every room contains a private, (semi-)open-air Onsen (hot springs) bath with views of Lake Suwa towards the far end of the room that also serves as a terrace of sorts. Our room was on the top (5th) floor with wonderful views of the lake, and was sufficiently spacious with a generously-sized living room and a separate bedroom with two large Western-style beds. Another neat feature of Sui Suwako is the open-air Onsen bath on the roof of the building. It offers commanding views of the lake, and it's also co-ed - unlike most Onsen baths, you're permitted to bathe in bathing suits, which allows for an enjoyable Onsen experience with friends and family of the opposite gender. And, given that only a maximum of 8 group of guests will be staying there at any given time, you're more than likely to have the bath all to yourself than sharing it with other guests. I recommend that you go just before dinner during the sunset hours. It's a gorgeous time to chill out and marvel at the beauty and serenity of the area. The dining experience was definitely a highlight. To start with, meals are served in one's own room (horray!) We love this aspect of the ryokan experience, and enjoy the intimacy, comfort and tranquility that it offers. The dinner is a many-course Kaiseki affair and focuses on regional produce and delicacies. The area is not very close to the ocean, so Sui Suwako emphasizes the wonderful mountain vegetables as well as fish from the Lake and its surrounds, and the flavors themselves are quite unique to the Shinshu region. Each serving was wonderfully prepared and beautifully decorated with local maple leaves, moss and other vegetation and served on unique plates, bowls, baskets and stone pots made by local artisans. It was definitely a delightful and educational gourmet experience. Among the highlights were the Wakasagi (Japanese Smelt from Lake Suwa) Tempura, which was light, crispy and very tasty; Chicken Houra-yaki, chicken and vegetables cooked on top of a large leaf with miso over a hot stone plate; and a small serving of Shinshu Soba with Karasumi (Salted Mullet Roe.) Breakfast was also not the same 'ol same 'ol. Sui Suwako focused, again, on the wonderful local vegetables, many of them pickled to serve as condiments for the rice porridge, and instead of the typical miso soup servings at most places, the breakfast soup was Kenchin Jiru, a wonderful, Umami-infused soup with root vegetables & tofu.) Very light and healthy, but still rich in complex flavors. We had an awesome time at Sui Suwako. It helped us learn and appreciate many of the wonderful aspects of the region, and the friendly staff, comfortable rooms and relaxing Onsen baths helped us recharge in the middle of a multi-week roadtrip throughout Japan. Should we ever venture through the area again (which is very likely), we would not hesitate to stay there once again. One final note: the Wakasagi Tempura was served to us via special request, and was not part of the menu for the evening. We had done some research in advance, and became aware of the delicacy that comes from Lake Suwa. We inquired about the possibility of trying out Wakasagi when we checked in earlier in the afternoon, and they thankfully were able to fulfill our request. The head chef supposedly used his connections to procure the Wakasagi from the local fishermen on short notice. It was awesome, and I would suggest you ask about Wakasagi in advance.

A truly Unique Experience

We booked in this hotel through a recommendation. My first time to be in Nagano and my family and i are very happy to be staying at this place, its quaint and homey, i intentionally didn't choose something chic and modern because i wanted a real japanese culture experience. Although you can only count the staff who spoke english but we didnt really expect anyone to speak the english dialect so this is okey. The lobby although its old and furniture has seen better days, it was also very clean, peaceful and i particularly like the running water in the lobby.. gives it a real feeling of tranquility. The garden outside although not manicured, but its look gives it a sense authenticity. My first time to experience onsen and ryokan breakfast and im glad i experienced it here in this place. Its only few meters away from Lake Suwa and there are a lot of dining options around the area. its also just 5 min walk from the train station. Highly recommended!

Feeling authentic Japanese hotel

Not sure; but the room I was assigned was a Japanese Tatami room where you need to sleep on the sleep mats on the Tatami floor instead of a bed. I need to agree with some of the reviews since it did not look like a hotel of these days; but amazingly traditional. The location might be one of the drivers for your choice; but I would recommend that you understand that you shouldn’t expect a modern accommodation. For those of you who like to experience traditional Japanese stay, it’s one of the perfect choices.
