The 10 best Bed and Breakfast Inns in New Jersey, United States

April 19, 2023 Jeremy Dunfee

Whether you are looking for sun-drenched beaches or outdoor activities in beautiful countryside, New Jersey has plenty to offer. Those who love the great outdoors should head for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which runs along the Delaware River for forty miles. Here you can go rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking or fishing, or simply admire the stunning waterfalls. There is a huge range of hiking trails to choose from as well as historic sites to visit. In winter, you can enjoy cross-country skiing near Blue Mountain Lakes, and birdwatchers might be lucky enough to catch sight of bald eagles. If you are looking for a change, visit one of New Jersey's eleven lighthouses that are open to public, such as the one in Cape May. For art and history enthusiasts, New Jersey State Museum in Trenton has historic artifacts and American fine art from the nineteenth century to the present day as well as a Planetarium.

The Carriage House Bed & Breakfast

This is my beautiful Victorian dream. It has 21 rooms of which 8 have ocean views, 9 have balconies and 5 have fireplaces. I make gourmet buffet breakfasts with a healthy twist. Gluten free and vegetarian dishes can be made upon request. Date balls are always available with tea or coffee. I make a killer quinoa crust veggie quiche. We are a block from the beach and 8 minute walk to Asbury Park.

A gorgeous place to stay!

This is by far the loveliest Ocean Grove B&B at which I've stayed. It is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, with lots of amenities--from free use of beach chairs and bikes to cookies and tea available all day! Viktoria makes a top-notch breakfast, and my ocean-view room was welcoming and blissfully quiet. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Elaine’s for our girls getaway weekend and loved it! Staff was great (the owners, Joan at the front desk and Paul and Sky in the restaurant). Room was remodeled, bright and clean. We ate breakfast there all three mornings and were never disappointed - fresh, delicious and generous portions. Great location. We ate dinner offsite at The Lobster House, Tisha’s and Panico’s and would highly recommend all there. No complaints, it was a great weekend!

Thank God for Anil and Alpine Haus

Reviewed By JacktheLad17

I was having a difficult day...until I knocked at the front door at Alpine Haus. It was like providence had led me there. My terrible day turned wonderful the moment I was in Anil's hands. His gift of hospitality, heretofore lauded many times over, is genuine and real. I stayed 2 nights in the cozy, private #1 Primrose Room, downstairs near the back porch. Anil's warmth and philosophy of religion and spirit is strong and reassuring. We need more people like him in this world. I haven't even mentioned his tea and breakfasts!! But those who have been before know all about these.... Do not miss the opportunity to experience Anil's charms. {BTW, I also own a B&B (smaller) and know the challenges/pleasures involved; I loved talking "shop" with a fellow innkeeper and finding new ways to be inspired.}

My husband & I visited Atlantis Inn several years ago and decided to return over the Memorial Day weekend. Happily, the Inn is still being lovingly cared for and is still beautiful. The inviting breakfast room with hot water for tea (my personal favorite) and a delicious breakfast for both days of our stay was much appreciated. We stayed in suite 12 with a king bed and a wonderful state of the art shower with plenty of jets and also a hand held wand. This location was perfect for us since steps are limited to entering the Inn. The location is perfectly situated in the heart of Ocean City right where the action is. It was nice to return to a familiar place and see that it is well cared for. We will be returning again soon!!

Wilbraham Mansion

Built in 1840 and enlarged circa 1890s, this beautifully restored B&B is the only one in Cape May to boast an indoor heated swimming pool.

Disappointing; Horrible Bed; Small Room; Poor Breakfast

Reviewed By ClinchMtnMan

We had high hopes for stay at the Wilbraham "Mansion" for our mini-vacation in Cape May. We selected a room in the "mansion" rather than in the newer hotel-style building in the back. The "mansion" was just a modest-size old Cape May house that needs some work. PROS: There is a salt water INDOOR pool. It looked nice but we're not swimmers so we didn't use it. The staff of 2 was moderately friendly but mostly invisible. The furnishings and fixtures are upgraded and it's obvious the owners tried to make things as nice as possible. There is an old kitchen with some items available. CONS: The room was small and not laid out well. The small TV was across the room, on the other side of the bed, but not a big deal, just inconvenient. The bathroom was in what likely was part of another room at one time and a 6" narrow step up (a tripping hazard, especially at night) and tiny except for the oversized shower. The biggest negative is the horrible mattress. We like a firm mattress but this was like a rock and lumpy. We didn't get a good night's sleep either of the two nights we were there. The "breakfast" was nothing special. No choice at all; they served it to our room (our choice) on a tray that we had to balance on our laps. It didn't seem like anything was homemade; I suspect frozen items reheated. Very disappointing. "Afternoon tea" consisted of serve-yourself to coffee or tea and a few packaged cakes and cookies. Finally, the off-season room rate was unreasonably high with a strict no-cancellation, no-refund policy. We could have stayed at the best chain hotel for half the price and many more amenities and comfort. Overall, we were disappointed and would not choose to stay there again.

Country Inn Of Hazlet

In the spirit of Norman Rockwell

Reviewed By VaBookwriter

This is an immaculate, crisp and obviously proudly run little hotel on heavily traveled R 35, though it may not be for everyone. The decor, ambience and spirit of the place is right out of a 1950s Saturday Evening Post Norman Rockwell cover, and indeed there are SEP covers in wooden frames all over the place, related bric a brac and nick nacks on the walls and shelves. The two people I dealt with (owner's family?) were also out of N. Rockwell in their kindness and attempt to please, esp. when I had some confusing moments at check in and asked to change my first floor room hard by a parking lot to one upstairs where I could open the windows and get a more pleasant view. Not a problem at all and I was able to leave the regular sash windows open my whole one night stay. That old charm may be off putting after awhile and it's continued in the room furniture which is all hardwood chairs and old dresser drawers, nothing really comfortable to sit on at length except the bed, which is very comfortable for sleeping. The rest of the room is clean and spacious. The hallways are almost institutional in their neat and orderliness. A great benefit is that the hotel is situated so that if you have to go north on R35 you don't have to go south for a hundred miles to a U turning place, which is one of those things about New Jersey that drives me nuts. You can just go out the back of the north side of the building parking lot and on to the next street for a left turn on 35. Small point I know, but I did I describe how driving in NJ drives me nuts? Recommended, and great value for me at 102.00 per night, incl. tax.
