Flatters to deceive...

Pictures much better than the tired reality. On our way there they rang to say the restaurant was full. What hotel does not check with guests who are staying for two nights if they wish to eat? Even in their room guide, guests are allowed to order a meal up to 6pm. The room had no effective bed lights since the 'designer' shade was a 30cm ball of feathers. The promised minibar was empty. The bed was rock hard so that I had to sleep on the duvet (it didn't help much). The contrast with our final night in the Champagne region was stark. We would put this place as 2 star at best with amateur customer service and will never return.

La Grange De Felix

Fantastic setting for a summer holiday

Reviewed By sophiezest

We have just spent a week at the Grange de Felix. Ten of us (6 adults, 4 children) shared the gîte, which is actually made up of two self-contained parts (sometimes they are B&B rooms rather than a holiday cottage). One side of the converted barn houses the kitchen, a 'master suite', prettily decorated in Toile de Jouy with its own bathroom, and a separate 'duplex' apartment with one bedroom on each floor (a double, and a room with smaller beds for children). There is a small seating area with a few books, where you can sit and relax. The other side of the barn is made up of a downstairs double room + shower room + toilet, an upstairs triple (3 single beds for children) and a small 'snug' with a TV and a sofa. The gîte is very quiet. It's in a very small village, and has views across fields at the back. The owners live on site but keep themselves to themselves. They have a few chickens, rabbits and a couple of horses. The children enjoyed feeding the hens in the morning! We had access to part of the garden, with a couple of swings for the children, and above all, a great swimming pool: totally safe (in France, swimming pools must be fenced or have a cover - heavy to drag into place, but it means you don't have to worry about small children), and a very pleasant temperature. Mrs Cagne makes her own jams and fruit wines, which you can buy. The area around Fontainebrux has plenty of attractions. You are not far from the beautiful hills of the Jura, with impressive limestone rock formations. We found plenty of half-day expeditions to keep everyone amused: visits to limestone caves, short walks, small museums, artisan cheese makers who demonstrate their art. This is the home of Comté cheese, but also of Vache qui Rit. If you've ever wanted to know everything about the Laughing Cow, go and visit the museum. It's very child friendly. To sum up our experience, the cons of our stay were: not very comfortable mattress on the bed. Quite a few flies in summer. Kitchen could do with slightly better equipment, e.g. decent knives. And the gîte wasn't cheap… Pros: beautiful, spacious gîte (thoughtfully decorated and generally well-equipped), great garden, fantastic pool, lots to do nearby, lovely covered terrace for outdoor meals, very well-organised and helpful owner (who will prepare a delicious and good-value meal on request), etc. etc!

Absolutely charming establishment

Located next to a stream in the heart of the Jura region, this little gem was absolutely prefect in every way...Lots of attention to details everywhere. Room was very well appointed. breakfast was lively with lots of home-made jams, honey, etc... Nathalie, the receptionist and waitress at breakfast was extremely pleasant and helpful. The owner was very helpful in arranging dinner reservations for us which could have been an issue during low season with many restaurants closed.

A year on and just as fabulous

Reviewed By nics218

We enjoyed our stay so much last year we booked in for another two nights on our way south. Returning to somewhere you really enjoyed before is sometimes a mistake but everything was just as fabulous as we remembered it. The room was clean and comfortable with an exceptionally comfortable mattress. Service was attentive without being intrusive. We ate in the restaurant both nights and had some exceptional dishes accompanied by local wines. Many of the dishes are based on produced grown in the small garden and breakfast was a great selection of fruit, bread, cheese, meats and homemade jam. We hope to return in the not too distant future.

Friendly welcome and excellent food and service

We stopped here for two nights in early December. We were made very welcome and ate in the restaurant. Lovely food in the evening and good breakfasts in the morning. Flo and Remy spoke excellent English - better than our French. It was so convenient, being less than 2km from the A39 Motorway junction. An excellent place to break a long journey without going too far out of the way. Highly recommended.

Superb hosts, lovely property

Stayed only one night, but would happily have stayed here all week (we used Le Colombier up the road, also very good, but due to a mix-up by us on dates we filled in with a night here). Katrine and Roland are so friendly, dropping in a savoury tarte and glass of Macvin after a minor minor hiccough with the bathroom door lock. The gite we stayed in, overlooking the field, was spacious and comfortable, and nicely decorated. The patio out front is warm in the sun and a good place for a meal, though there is a large table indoors. Katrine's breakfast eggs (fried in a lidded pan as a sort of egg tartine) were superb, and the rest of breakfast enormous with hams and cheese and bread and jams etc. We were welcomed into their home too, before we left, for a coffee and chat, their English being not brilliant but better than our French but it didn't matter. Would love to visit again. We know the Jura well, and this is a great location for visiting sites or making the most of the local countryside on foot or bike. There is no bakery, bar or restaurant in Le Fied, but a short walk for lunch to Cirque de Ladoye, or a bike ride to the boulangerie in La Marre

Cosy hidden treasure!

Reviewed By Ramolavi

Cosy hidden treasure that needs to be explored. This was a recommendation for one night and it surprised me from the very beginning. Hidden in a small town with old streets and quite old architecture of the houses, hidden at the bottom of a beautiful hill with a beautiful church on top. It’s peaceful, it offers a quiet location with nature and French cuisine to explore. The bed and breakfast itself is beautifully designed by the couple who owns it. It has 7 rooms, spacious and unique. Caroline, the landlord, has given a special touch to each room including the common area. There is a pool that has as view a beautiful forest. Both Caroline and her husband are relay sweet and welcoming. We were served a delicious dinner and great breakfast. I will definitely return!
