Wonderful views of the Japanese Alps

Reviewed By tribecatravler

We visited Kamikochi in late May and were delighted to find this hotel was open. I believe it was the only hotel open at the time, given COVID and recent earthquakes. We had a comfortable room with an amazing view of the Japanese Alps. Just like on their website. For dinner we chose the Japanese course, which was fine. The service was excellent. I think this hotel might have the best mountain views of any of the hotels in Kamikochi. The outside porch is amazing. I believe there might have only been one or two other rooms taken when we were there and we were appreciative of the efforts made to make us comfortable.

The Suimeikan is a ryokan that was established 80 years ago along the Hida River, where it currently remains sitting at the heart of Gero Onsen, one of the three most famous onsen locations in Japan. Guests can experience traditional Japanese culture inside the ryokan, which features a Japanese garden, a genuine Noh stage, as well as ceramic and art works. Guests can also enjoy hot springs with skin beautifying effects in three spots, including an open-air bath with an indoor bath, a large scenic bath, and a large communal indoor bath with a hinoki sauna. The communal scenic bath can be used 24 hours a day. We offer a variety of guest rooms in the Seiranso, Rinsenkaku, Hisenkaku, Sansuikaku manors. The hotel also features plenty of facilities such as a swimming pool, gym, beauty salon, and a bar. Shuttle Service Gero Station ⇔ Hotel *No prior reservation required. Shuttle will match limited express train arrivals to meet guests. The hotel is located just a 3 min walk from there.

Definitely worth a visit to Gero and Suimeikan if you are in the area.

Suimeikan was a really good hotel. We decided to stop in Gero which turned out to be a very nice traditional onsen town. Beautiful place. The hotel is just across the bridge from the main town. The hotel is big, beautiful and welcoming. It is a traditional Japanese onsen hotel and feels wonderful to the small details. The have a indoor and outdoor pool, game room, 3 different onsens, many different restaurants and a lobby lounge with a beautiful Japanese garden. Lots of parking space. There are three main buildings. We stayed in Sansui and had the new Japanese Western room. We had a corner room with a beautiful view of both the bridge and the garden. The room was cozy and comfortable. Because it was newly renovated it didn't smell like old smoke as I read in other reviews. The room was great for us. Dinner at the Japanese restaurant was super. Breakfast buffet was not very good, food just wasn't very good. We visited during Golden Week and the hotel was booked solid, however we never felt that the place was crowded. The hotel absorbs guests very well. Service is excellent, very friendly. Hotel was easy to use and enjoy. Hours for use were all really flexible. Some hotels are just too restrictive. Of the three onsens my favorite was the Big Cedar bath and it had a sauna, second was the Outdoor bath. The Panaroma bath seemed old. Definitely worth a visit to Gero and Suimeikan if you are in the area.

Amazing experience at this Ryokan in front of the beach. I stayed in room 211 with a private bath in the balcony. The view from the room was amazing and very beautiful. The shower was great also, located next to the balcony. The hotel has 2 different public baths. One of them is located in the terrace where you can observe the beautiful stars at night while relaxing in the bath. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. There is a ping pong table near the front office where you can play for free. The dinner and breakfast were very delicious and very abundant. I will definitely stay here again if I go to Shimoda.

Shinyu gets an Excellent from my family.

Reviewed By SandBTokyo

We decided to stop in Suwa to break up a long drive back to Tokyo. Shinyu looked very good and the price was reasonable. The hotel is renovated and gives a nice modern spa hotel atmosphere. The greeting at the hotel is very nice and the lobby area is beautiful. We felt very welcomed when we arrived. Our room was facing the lake. It was Japanese style with tatami and futons. Nice room, nice view. The public bath was nice. Not huge but felt very good. They have an indoor bath, small outdoor bath, a sauna and a cold bath. Dinner was great, as was breakfast. They were both courses and delicious. Service? Well, this is what makes all the difference. When we book hotels we need to detail my daughter's food allergies which are serious. For this trip we had booked many hotels in a row and for some reason when we booked Shinyu and checked-in we just forgot. It was our fault and when we sat for dinner we saw her prepared meal that she obviously could not eat. The staff at Shinyu didn't miss a beat. The didn't make a big deal about it. No stress. The quickly adjusted and made a wonderful dinner for my daughter and also prepared for her breakfast in similar fashion. Wonderful. Such great service. Maybe the building isn't perfect. But the service was perfect. Shinyu was our last stop on our trip and we left with a smile. Shinyu gets an "Excellent" from my family.

The perfect ryokan in Kanazawa

When looking to stay in Kanazawa, one would be hard pressed to find a more perfect place than Sumiyoshiya. The location is great, as it is very close to both the Omi-Cho Market, and the Kanazawa Castle Park. We spent two nights at this ryokan and could not have been happier! Mie Sumi was the consumate hostess! When asked for extra water in the room, recommendations for a shushi restaurant, arranging for taxis, all was taken care of in a matter of minutes. She even provided us with the name and location of the where to find the wonderful tea sweets served in our room. The room (#2) was spacious and immaculate. The dinner (served in our room) was outstanding! Crab, grilled fish, sushimi, shrimp, and clear soup with clam were all delicious. We could not have asked for a more wonderful meal! While Kanazawa was a bit quiet (mid-June, Tues-Thurs) we found plenty to do around town, and will make a return visit in November. When we do, we plan to stay at Sumiyoshiya once again.
