Nice and quaint

The apartment was old and furnishings were ok. We were in number 7. It would not be suitable for 4 people as there is one small bathroom that is accessed via the bedroom. Small tiny kitchen that works for an overnight stay. Nice little garden to the side. Great location. It was good value overall.

Upon entering the gates of the Bastide, we knew we had selected a very special place to stay. The property is gorgeous and peaceful; decorated with art lovingly selected over the years by Brian, the owner and host. The suites are beautiful and peaceful, providing a quiet respite from busy sightseeing days. Brian is an incredibly gracious host. He is also a trained chef and in addition to wonderful options for breakfast each day, he also prepares delicious dinners. We enjoyed them so much, we ate there all 3 nights of our stay. Thank you, Brian, for an unforgettable stay!

Aux Augustins

A stone throw away from the Pope's palace, facing the beautifully renovated Carmes square, you'll find our boutique guesthouse with its architectural elements of origin, built upon the ruins of an Augustinian convent dating from the 13th/14th century. The “Augustinian Bell Tower” right next to our property is another witness of the existence of the Augustinian church, partially dismantled and sold in batches after the French Revolution. Lovers of stones will be seduced by the exceptional character of this recently renovated building. In this hidden, peaceful setting, right in the city center, but away from the touristic hustle and bustle, you can enjoy living like a local, meeting locals. Carmes square which is facing our house is the place with little, local producer market on Saturday and a flee market on Sunday mornings. The bonus was a choice of room, we chose a ground floor room with table and chairs in the lovely patio/garden area which felt like a haven after a day of sightseeing. Our host Patrick could not have been more helpful.

Avoid

We stayed at May de Capelou in May 2022. It is a beautiful farmhouse but it has a problem - mosquitoes - and lots of them. There is no mention in their publicity that the property is located on an island. Nor do they warn guests of the issues when they check-in. We were encouraged to book at their outdoor restaurant La Brousse on our first night, surrounded as it is by woodland and orchards, and we were eaten alive. The mosquitoes were everywhere, swarming over our heads and in our faces. The hotel don't mention either that that have 6 machines in operation to try and control the population which clearly don't work. My wife was severely bitten in spite of the fact she was dressed in long trousers, lace up shoes and a long sleeved top. Her leg swelled up and we were forced to leave after 2 days of a planned week. The manager Valerie was not sympathetic, giving the equivalent of a gallic shrug. When we informed her that we would be leaving, my wife spent the entire day in our room. At no time was there any enquiry from the hotel staff as to her welfare. Not a visit to the room or even a telephone call when they knew she was unwell. When we checked out at 1700 which the hotel were advised of, I felt sure that this small boutique hotel which is marketed as being "like a private house" would at least give us a personal farewell. I would expect that under normal circumstances let alone after our experience. Not a single member of staff appeared, yet one was clearly visible sunning himself at the hotel pool. We left alone without a single word from the hotel. In summary I don't believe this hotel really cares for it's guests. They certainly did nothing for us in the wake of our experience showing a casual disregard for our wellbeing. I wrote to the manager when we returned home and gave them an opportunity to make a gesture of goodwill towards us in view of what happened. They were not interested except to say they would consider refunding something if they re-let the room Think very carefully before you book this hotel and consider the pitfalls.

A delightful refuge from the crowds

Reviewed By cscgesp

We recently spent two nights at Peniche le Hasard -- what a special place! Our room (the captain's quarters) was very spacious, with a great shower, a corner sink, a private toilet, and great views of the Rhone from our two port windows. The breakfasts were exquisite, and one evening, after going to the Saturday market in Arles, we were able to eat our own picnic dinner up on the deck after relaxing for a bit in the super comfy hanging lounge chairs with a glass of rosé. The hosts are not your typical B&B chatty and informative hosts -- in fact we rarely saw them -- but the one that we did interact with was very nice. Maybe French B&B hosts are just more reserved than those in Britain and the US. Anyway, we highly recommend this experience to anyone who plans to stay in the Avignon area. Just be aware that you need to bring all of your luggage out of your car and down the narrow winding stairs into the cabin, even if you don't plan to use all of it. We purposely put everything we'd need for 2 nights into one bag but were warned to bring everything in because one never knows when cars may be broken into. On the whole, a great stay.

Violette was our lovely hostess. As we arrived after 6, she made arrangements for us to obtain our key in a secure manner and it was very easy to find our room. Water was thoughtfully left for us, towels, etc. and the bed was quite comfortable with a quiet courtyard king room. Breakfast was provided by Violette in the morning in an enclosed porch with breads, coffee, tea, a juicer, cake, fruit & yogurt. The cost was very reasonable and we would definitely stay here again.
