The 10 best Bed and Breakfast Inns in Antananarivo, Madagascar

May 3, 2023 Jacquiline Darosa

Built on a narrow, rocky ridge, Antananarivo occupies a strategic point at the center of the island of Madagascar. Two forts watch over the city from the east and southwest, while within the city limits lay royal palaces, embassies, some fifty churches and a mosque. The city's most distinguishing feature may be the burnt out remains of the Rova, or Queen's Palace, situated on a prominent hill. Its steep alleys and stairways make Antananarivo a challenging but rewarding city to explore on foot.

Great, secure guesthouse

Came here on world challenge, this was our first stopover, 10 minutes away from the airport. The rooms were clean, there was a computer with internet access. Breakfast was included in the price of our stay which was delicious and cooked by the hotel owners each morning. Spacious back garden with a pavilion, pool seemed unclean however. Our room was quite difficult to lock, and occasionally the hot water would run short during a shower. Can’t really complain about much else however :)

So nice!

Reviewed By tripaddict4ever111

I stayed here for just 1 night after my tour finished. The hotel is a colonial house on the hill looking over a part of the city with a pool and sun chairs, right in the city center. It's really, really charming and looks so good and I really LOVED it! I booked a superior double room which was lovely, the breakfast was very good and there is this very nice lady who is taking care of everything(when I left the hotel to go in the city she told me to take care at my back pack). The only "con": there was no soap in the bathroom.

VERY BAD SERVICES I DO NOT RECOMMEND

I will never recommend this hotel. I had to stay there for quaratine. Their room smell moldy. There no windows, no sun enter in the room. When there's a power cut, there no power generator. When i asked to change the room, i fact all rooms are the same. I wanted to change hotel, they said it is not possible. The manager of the hotel is not polite at all. She said to me that if i am in her hotel.it means that i do not have money to go to good hotel like Colbert. She also tell me that it's me who smell bad not her hotel, i have to get a shower.

Fabulous hotel with a decent breakfast

Reviewed By SalamatJalan

We really enjoyed staying at this place in the capital. It's ten minutes from the airport, and we stayed in an elegant suite that was way bigger than we needed! Only wierd thing was that they have a very thin covering to the window next to the shower. Fortunately the hotel looks out on a very large field out back. It's very quiet, and the staff is very friendly. You can eat at the hotel or walk to a number of good restaurants, although the walk itself is through a safe, but poverty stricken neighborhood. This hotel is the height of luxury!

Excellent start to our trip

Reviewed By Shobanaa486

We stayed at Rova Hotel for the first night of our trip to Madagascar. It was a simple but lovely hotel. Our room was clean and had lots of space. The bathroom was spacious and had a great hot shower. Our room had two twin beds so we mashed them together since we only wanted one bed. Something to make sure to request if you're staying here. We had a really early start to our morning (4am) but the hotel accommodated that for us and had breakfast ready for us at that time. It was simple but great!

Best place to stay in Tana

Reviewed By paxa

This is a B&B with only 3 guest rooms above a restaurant with a patio. It's up on a hillside by the lake in a nice and quiet residential neighborhood and probably has the most beautiful view in and of Tana (however 15 min walk will put you in a busy area with shops and restaurants). All rooms have balconies - we booked a "deluxe room with balcony" which turned out to be the room in the middle (Kanto) with the largest balcony and most open view unobstructed by trees. The room itself is midsized with high ceilings, elegant decor, clean with large updated bathroom and good shower. Bed is comfortable with a mosquito net although we didn't need to use it. This is a place you could stay for a week or more and feel right at home. There's nothing more pleasant than sitting on the balcony and enjoy a drink or cup of tea. Having a restaurant right downstairs is convenient - had dinner there and the food was very good, well prepared and presented and quite reasonable for a casual fine dining experience. On Sunday they seem to have a brunch buffet with a most beautiful canapés spread. The included breakfast is straight continental with croissants, juice, fruit salad and coffee/tea. Wished they had a bit more than that - even just hard boiled eggs would have made things more perfect. Nevertheless it was very enjoyable having a leisurely breakfast on the patio. Service was very good. The manager ordered us a private car when it's time to go to the airport - for the equivalent of $15 - and it was a car in clean and good condition (I'm noting this as you can't say that about most taxis in Tana - the one we took to get to this hotel was in such poor shape it almost couldn't make it up the hill).

Good location, gets the job done

Reviewed By Jeff T

Stayed here twice for one night on the first and last night of an 8 day tour. Convenient to some shops, restaurants and quiet streets for walking. Parking is tight to non-existent so take a hire car or plan way ahead. Staff were friendly and efficient for check-in. Porter carried out bags upstairs quickly. They didn't appear to have an elevator. Rooms are kitchenette with a dinette area, bedroom separate, sitting area and bathroom. Bathroom had a hairdryer and basic toiletries such as shampoo, body wash, conditioner and toohbrush and comb. WiFi worked just fine, no experience with the TV. Minibar is a stocked refrigerator. Big beers in bottles were cheaper than in cans. Beds were comfortable and on the firm side. Pillows and sheets were fluffy and comfortable respectively. No restaurant for lunch/dinner but Kudeta is right across the street (see more reviews there - very good!). Breakfast was simple and lacked variety. Food was prepared early and left out for guests so for warm dishes get there early. Checkout was efficient and we had prepaid so only closing the minibar tab was needed. Smiling faces all around, no complaints.

Mandated Stay for 2 night quarantine

Any forced confinement is not pleasurable, and this was no exception. Room was OK, and generally clean. The pre-paid airport transfer left much to be desired. Kept waiting after the long flight so they could pick up more passengers. Did not try the restaurant except for a cup of tea(tea bag in hot water) that cost the equivalent of 1 USD. Internet OK. credit card not accepted.
