The fish was fresh but very flat. The asparagus and carrots were great and farm fresh! The starters, my wife had the mushrooms on toast. Yummy! I had the scallops that were small in size but tasty. Breakfast was also nice with farm fresh eggs and Kippered Salmon.

Looking for overnight accommodation in Tain itself, The Royal Hotel was warm, comfortable, with clean well equipped and soundproofed rooms, and a warm welcome. There have been variable reports on the evening meal, but full English breakfast was just fine with an individually cooked meal, and limitless coffee.

We had a meal here as it was the closest restaurant to our guest house. We were given the choice of a table in the bar or conservatory dining room and decided on the bar.
The bar has stained glass windows from the original build of the hotel and it is a cosy room to have a meal in.
We were offered a printed menu and there was a board with the daily dishes on. Jackie had Fish Pie and I had Gammon with chips, mushrooms, tomatoes and salad. Both tasted good and the gammon is a good choice if you are hungry. The star of the meal was their take on Eton Mess which we shared and was one of the best we have had. With a bottle of sparkling water and a glass of stout the bill came to £43.
Throughout the meal the staff were friendly and helpful

Had breakfast here today. I ordered a white roll with Stornoway black pudding and a tattie scone and my partner ordered a small breakfast. We also had a pot of tea. The food arrived promptly and was a very generous portion. The staff were very friendly and the decor was bright and cheery and the bathroom was immaculate. We gladly paid £12 for our breakfast.

Small hotels sometimes don't pay a lot of attention to eating (apart from Breakfasts) as often guests want to explore the area and that can cover food too. In my brief stay I discovered a menu which would have sat well in larger and more expensive places and clearly the product of a chef with skill, experience and enthusiasm. All tastes are catered for and service is efficient and helpful. Some of the flavour combinations may challenge some palates but the quality is absolute.

Curry Club

The restaurant was full during a busy event in Tain, but the staff worked very hard, were very efficient under pressure and remained friendly to their customers. Food was good. The inside was clean, fresh and well maintained. We went back a second night just to get some take away food (Top Tain Curry Club also has a takeaway section, which is separate from the restaurant). Not what you expect from a takeaway where you can also get some chips and a pizza. Like in the restaurant the portions were large and everything in the takeaway was well finished and very clean. I bought a chicken burger and the salad was fresh! Quite a difference to the common greasy chippy.

4 of us had dinner here recently. I had Cheese Souffle with the local Tain Cheese which was very nice and followed it with the Prawn and Chorizo Linguine which was delicious. The Rump Steak looked nice too. A limited but good wine list. Everything is reasonably priced and served well.
Don't be put off by the external surroundings. This is the best restaurant in town.
Recommended.

St Duthus Hotel Restaurant

We stopped here recently for an evening meal. We hadn't booked on a busy evening but where still able to accommodate us. The waitress (Iona) was excellent - nothing too much trouble for her, she was polite, friendly, efficient and professional. A real asset to this business. They provided a separate children's menu with colouring in and crayons for our wee one. I ordered a burger and my wife ordered the Hunter's Chicken. The chips and onion rings were great but the burger itself was thin and disappointing. The hunter's chicken portion was not particularly large and smothered in BBQ sauce.
In summary the food was OK, service terrific and food prices slightly on the high side for what you get. Bar prices are reasonable.
