Sint Maartenskerk

Zaltbommel is laid back, but it is one of the oldest cities in Holland.
It is older than Amsterdam, and the only cities in the Netherlands I know to be older are Groningen, Nijmegen and Maastricht.
Most of Holland 500 years ago was land that was flooded most winters as there were no dikes yet, so cities were always situated on areas that were well above those water levels; and even then they would build a dirt wall around, both for protection against high water as well as to keep enemies out.
This church is an undiscovered gem in many ways.
There are some remarkable old wall paintings left.
The church is well restored and has sections dating from the early 1300's.
It has a impressive organ from the 1780's.

My wife and I and sister recently returned from a trip to the Netherlands. We were on a tight schedule and had a number of places on "our list". We were fortunate enough to have discovered Stefka Waaijer through the company Tours by Locals. I had communicated with Stefka by email when planning the trip and had provided her with "the list" which included Keukenhof Gardens, the auction at Aalsmeer, pottery at Delft, and tulip fields. Stefka was wonderful and most receptive to the idea of a private, customized tour. She was responsive to my messages, prompt, and courteous. Without Stefka we would have never been able to see everything. We would recommend her without hesitation.

Old fortress transformed into education & fun park, really well done, and in further development. Among the highlights: local history (explanation of the functioning of this fort, and the system of forts arround) and reality (NL water line), Earth history (a big model of the Earth where you interactivelly observe the changes on the surface of the planet from the beggining till now), bulding wooden houses and test their earthquake safety (fun!), testing sense of orientation (underground tunnel between the former ammunition storages) and smelling (quite big labirynth where you have to follow a certain smell - really great idea and realisation), geomedia-based games where you detect e.g. landuse changes, bad railway tracks, another really funny - learning cartographic projections based on photos of individual visitor's face (you can send your carographically transformed faces to your email); each participant can make a simple compass; a treasure-hunt-like game all over the area - using iphones (borrowed from the Geofort) for virtual-reality-search of virtual boxes (seen only on the phone) with questions - and our answers have been collected - to be overviewed later in a class; a small "adrenaline park" for kids and adult kids as well; there are some activities especially for the kids, and a few sheep observing the visitors all over the Geofort.

De Wonderlijke Klim

To celebrate the Jheronimus Bosch year, St John's Cathedral (Sint Janskathedraal) in Den Bosch has erected scaffolding to allow visitors an up-close look at the gargoyles and the flying buttresses of the Cathedral. The 96 medieval gargoyles were added as "weight" to the flying buttresses to solve some structural issues in the Gothic Cathedral. I've never been able to see the detail on a Cathedral this up-close. It's a unique experience and is only available thru October 2016.
€7 per adult allows you to climb the scaffolding and hear a brief description (spoken only in Dutch). They do provide pamphlets with descriptions of all the gargoyles. Elevator access is available for elderly and those incapable of the climb. To see both sides of the Cathedral you still need to be able to climb steps, but can see a good deal from the top of the platform if you cannot climb. They do limit the number of people in each group to go up. You must get tickets for an allocated time slot. I suggest buying tickets in advance, or going early to the church for the few tickets they hold back in reserve for purchase on the day.

We booked this trip some time in advance, we expected just another boat trip, but where surprised by the Wonderfull country side and the difference in view from a boat in the Betuwe.
We love to cycle trough this area but the boat trip is quite something different.
We had some snacks and drink to go along our with our trip, those we can recommend.
I would expect no one to be disappointed, we booked twice during our stay :-)

Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught

Camp Vught National Memorial (Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught ) is located on part of the former SS camp Konzentrationslager Herzogenbusch, also known as Camp Vught (January 1943 – September 1944). The combined memorial centre and museum features various Exhibitions, a memorial room and wall of reflection. The museum is spread out over several buildings and outdoor areas. A model of the camp shows the extensive size of the camp and the many buildings it included. The watchtowers, which were built a hundred meters apart, have been reconstructed. The barrack, rebuilt at half the original size, shows how the prisoners lived. The Children’s Memorial lists the names and ages of the 1,269 Jewish children who were deported in June 1943. There is also an authentic crematorium. The texts accompanying the permanent exhibition are in Dutch. However, texts for temporary Exhibitions are often translated, e.g. 'Food in war time'. Audiotour available Dutch/English/German/French (€2,50); free parking.

This attraction was extremely well presented, and represented in detail. We opted for the handheld vocal tour- well with the extra money. We spent two hours here. Emotions would depend on your attachment to the War. Modern day parallels well tied in at the end of the tour.

Great historical place in the river area of Holland. Experience the story of Hugo de Groot, experience Holland of the dark ages and find out how well this old castle has been preserved. Great tours through and around the castle have been organized. there's also a nice little restaurant, serving little dished and Belgian beer. Absolute a 'must do'!

St. John's Cathedral

Reviewed By Christel8 - Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands

This is a nice and huge Cathedral, you can even climb the tower if you like to. There are guided tours organized for those who wants to get some more details about this Cathedral.
During the Christmas period, part of the Cathedral is showing the scene of the birth of Christ: you will see lots of stuffed animals, persons wearing traditional clothes and finally of course the crib. Worth a visit.
