Family run with pride

Reviewed By Peeter P

From the very first greeting, we could sense that this family-run hotel was going to be warm and welcoming. We were very lucky to get room 32, with a spectacular 180 degree view of the estuary. The room was clean, warm and with all the amenities we expected. Dinner was marvellous as was the breakfast. We only stayed one night, as our tour company wisely thought this somewhat remote hotel was a good stopover on our 14-day journey around Iceland. The Country Hotel was one of the top places during our visit to this wonderful country.

Karuna Guesthouse

Karuna Guesthouse is a family-run guesthouse located in the North of Iceland. The farm is located on road 75, between Varmahlíð and Saudarkrokur. We offer all year accommodation, both in Gulluhús, a cozy house with 5 bedrooms, all twin /double rooms with 2 shared bathrooms with shower. In the old farmhouse that is newly renovated, is the lounge and 5 larger rooms that are all equipped with coffee/tea facilities and with a private bathroom with shower. These rooms accommodate one double room, two triple rooms, one quadruple room (family of four) and one family room for 5, they all have a private entrance. They are not included in Gulluhus, i.e. it needs to go outside to enter a shared kitchen and lounge. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to prepare a great meal. We are located on a farm where we have a magnificent view, horses on grazing, hens on a paddock, and a few dogs at play. Here we offer comfort and peace

Great place, beware of breakfast thieves

This is a great little hotel in a rural area of Iceland with very few accommodation options. They have kitchen facilities which were very helpful given that there are also few dining options in this area as well. Pro tip: stop and pick yourself up dinner groceries (maybe a Grandioso - most popular pizza in Norway!) at the grocery store in Blönduos. Be sure to research the hours - they close early (4pm on Sundays!). Travelers - be aware - the owner “advertises” leaving free items for you to cook for breakfast. Be prepared to arrive early or scavenge (or just bring your own). During our stay, one group of guests took over the kitchen and prepared their breakfast and lunch ( egg salad sandwiches ) with the supplies left for the guests (?) which left us and the other guests trying to politely manage sharing the last 2 pieces of bread and dry cereal. If this happens contact the owner who is willing to help. We did not know this until after our experience. In our communication with the owner, she clearly knows this has been a problem but has yet to remedy it (would recommend starting with a note in the kitchen stating 1 egg per guest please). Other than that - cute place. As noted in other reviews, the water does have a strong sulfur smell - but hey, what do you expect - it’s Iceland!!

Hotel Tindastoll

Hotel Tindastoll is the oldest hotel in Iceland, dating back in 1884. The building came in parts from Norway and it was assembled as a storehouse in Hofsos between 1820 and 1829, moved later on to Grafarós in 1833 and finally shipped over the fjord and reassembled at its present location in Sauðárkrókur.

Guesthouse in the middle of Skagafjordur at Hegranes peninsula. The house was built in 1907 and carefully renovated. From the house there are stunning views over the river, the mountains and the sea. From september - april you can see the northern lights when clear sky in the nights. In summer it's perfect for hiking or horseback riding on our 360 ha of land. We have 5 double rooms with shared facilities, breakfast is included april - september. Want to go on skiing, there is a really nice facility for downhill skiing att Tindastóll outside Saudarkrókur. Only 10 minutes to the center of Saudarkrokur. A

Some good things..... (1) Lovely setting and view (2) Very clean Nicely appointed common rooms. Some bad things (1) No breakfast or other food and at least 15 minutes drive away from restaurants (2) Only one tiny bathroom shared by five or so guest rooms. (3) Smallish rooms (4) Very reasonable price for what it is. (5) Decent wifi in common areas--very weak in rooms If you are expecting a hostel, you will love it. If you are expecting a hotel, you will be disappointed. On balance, it is great for what it is, but disappointing for what it is not.

Very nice place!

This place was perfect, beds were very comfortable, everything is clean and cosy and the house is very nice. The instructions received by mail to get into the house are very clear. This place also has a bar opened from 21h to 23h, and you have a good restaurant on the other side of the street. I definitely recommend it if you are driving by this town!

Clean place to stay over for a night

Reviewed By uri123

The hotel seems like a school dormitory that houses guests during the summer. The guests stay in the upper floor while there were children in the building, I guess on the bottom floor. There is not much to do in this town except have dinner and sleep here, along the way to somewhere else. The accommodation is clean. Service was good, as well as breakfast.

College Dorm

Reviewed By Sassysorsker

This hotel was booked for us by Guide to Iceland. If you want to feel like you are in a college dorm then this is the place for you. Pros: easy to find as it’s a large orange building. Free parking. Front desk agent and artist was friendly. Cons: outside ramp is bumpy and not easy to drag your luggage. Carpeting in hallway has bumps for easy tripping. Our bathroom was so small that one person felt crowded inside. No toilet paper holder so you had to reach over your head (see pics). Shower door didn’t touch the floor so water got everywhere. Slight sulfur smell in shower. Soap smelled heavily of cheap perfume. No mirror outside the minuscule bathroom for partner. Dark shades barely did anything (see pics). Breakfast was in a huge cafeteria-like kitchen yet couldn’t procure a hot breakfast. You had to walk across the kitchen to add milk to your coffee. No television in the room. No coffee or tea available in the room. No restaurant on site for dinner. Please click “helpful” if you found this info informative.
