VTF Les Balcons de Maurienne

Good food, good skiing and great value!

Reviewed By TonySG1

Les Karellis isn't your normal French ski station. It's in the Maurienne valley - so south of Val Thorens and near the Italian border. There's no hotels - all the accommodation is in blocks at the foot of the slopes. The rooms are small, but nicely furnished, with plenty of storage space, a TV and free WiFi. And that's not all that's free... A weeks stay here costs around 300-400 Euro. That gets you the room, all meals with wine, organised activities during the day and evening, and a lift pass. Let's go through those individually. The food. French home-style cooking, for the most part. Soup, salad and cold meat starters, a choice of freshly-cooked hot dishes, a huge array of cheeses, fruit and desserts. And red or rose wine, freely available. The tables were mostly refectory style, with some smaller tables available too. Activities. During the day, there were walks, snowshoe hikes, visits to local museums and churches. That's as well as the skiing, obviously. The evenings saw dance lessons, bands, a magic show and quizzes. Mostly held in the bar, which was lively and popular, and pretty good value for France, let alone good value for a ski resort. The skiing. There's 60 km of piste, which isn't huge. It's quite varied, with greens winding through the trees, and a good few wide-open blues and reds higher up. There's a few blacks, but if you need lots of blacks you might be better off in the Three Valleys. If you're happy doing a run a few times then there's enough to keep you busy for a week. And no queues. None at all. Not even in the (very friendly) mountain restaurant. The only caveat is that this place is very French. If you're not a Francophile, you'll hate it here. If you can speak a bit of French, you like French food and the French in general, it's a very good place to go. Friendly, extraordinarily good value and good fun all round.

Delicious Restaurant, Cosy Rooms

Reviewed By FAU2409

This place is a restaurant with some rooms rather than an hotel with dining options. That makes it a unique experience : eat here, it is just delicious, and then take the elevator to a renovated room and dream away. It is a great place.

A neat place to stay for a few days

A bit hard to find but once found, we had a nice room with all facilities. Charming host. and secure parking. It is a bit too far from the main town centre to walk but that aside, we would come back again.Very rustic decor with lots of wood as one would expect in the Alpine Valley. Average price.
