Soma Restaurant & wine bar

Reviewed By WineHighlander - Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

We were really looking forward to this meal having read the reviews and given 5 star ratings to two of their main TA competitors. We were however underwhelmed by the overall experience and never experienced the friendliness and warmth of other reviews even though the restaurant was by no means full and had plenty of staff on duty. There was efficiency with no engagement.
We had ham croquettes which were totally bland, had little flavour and we left more than half the portion of 8 pieces. The total star of the night was a slice of foie gras on a piece of cooking apple in a stunning broth/ sauce, this was amazing and had such complex flavours. We then had the fish paella for two, the flavours were good, but the dish was over salted, the mussels excellent but much of the other fish especially the prawns were overcooked. By comparison the night before I had prawns at Quince which were utterly amazing, juicy and moist, these were hard and dried out due to overcooking. The comprehensive wine list was good and we enjoyed a lovely local wine called OBAC from the 2015 vintage.
This was nearly £100 for a meal and we were left underwhelmed, the weather didn't help as it was very windy and the rain came on as we were leaving so may have preoccupied the staff, but hey they are professionals. We are going back to Quince and also the amazing Tr3nt1 before we go where the overall experience at a similar price point was outstanding.
