By chance my wife and I found ourselves in Montauban, on a Monday, on foot, looking for somewhere for lunch. Not easy – most restaurants were shut and the fast-food places did not arouse interest. Then we found Palais d’Asie and what a fortunate find! The restaurant is small and simple but we received a warm welcome and had a most enjoyable lunch. The menu is short but the chef is very good.To start we had a Salade Vietnamien and Nem au Porc, both really good. The nem were very tasty, crisp, golden and hot and were served with lettuce leaves to form a wrap and a very good dip. The salade had a generous amount of chicken with bean sprouts, shredded carrots, lettuce and a really good Vietnamese dressing. Next we both had Seiche [squid] with a piquant sauce and Cantonese rice. We were asked how piquant we would like the sauce to be. When the dishes arrived the cooking of the squid was perfect, the sauce delicious and the rice was an excellent accompaniment. We each had a glass of a local rose wine which went well with the food. The wine servings were generous. We completed our lunch with beignets de banana which were good and not too sweet. All this for €38! This little restaurant is most thoroughly recommended.
