We were visiting my son in NC and he wanted to take us here for dinner. I ordered the salmon with curry sauce and it was delicious! We also tried the empanadas which were also very good. Our server was very attentive. I really can not think of one negative thing to say except I wish we had one of these restaurants in New Jersey!

Guru India Restaurant

Reviewed By HollyR56

Last night we hosted an Indian Restaurant Cook-Off. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh from 4 local Indian restaurants (with some slight variations as two of our "tasters" didn't eat lamb, so we substituted a Mango Shrimp from Tandoor. And Vimla's Curryblossom Cafe doesn't offer a Tikka Masala so we substituted a Chicken Curry. But otherwise, it was a blind taste tasting to compare dishes from Tandoor, Guru, Mint and Vimla's. I had never eaten at Guru before, and the Trip Advisor reviews had given it an edge in my mind -- so I was expecting great things. (Since I was serving the food, I was not blind to the restaurants, but everyone else was) There wasn't a unanimous vote for any one restaurant, and the most votes for chicken were different than the most votes for lamb. But in our small (seven person) taste-off Tandoor was the winner for the Chicken Tikka Masala. And Vimla's received the most votes for the Lamb Rogan Josh.Guru came in second for the Chicken Tikka Masala with 2 votes vs. 4 for Tandoor and 1 for Mint. So you can see it was quite a divided group. One of the things that was unusual at Guru was that the chicken was cut into large perfectly square chunks. The chicken was all white meat and seemed like good quality, but the presentation seemed unnatural. In addition the chicken was called out as dry and the sauce "ordinary" and "not that flavorful". I also thought there was a lot of sauce compared to the amount of chicken. But two people liked it best. The Rogan Josh was universally disliked. The lamb was dry and tough, the sauce thin and included chunks of green and red peppers that no one seemed to like, including people who like peppers. While we didn't consider price as a factor in the contest, Guru's was at the lower end of cost and offers a student discount. For 3 dishes and an order of naan, Guru (with the discount) was $44. Mint was at the top at $58.00 and Vimla's is a bargain at around $35. Tandoor was about $50. I was disappointed with Guru's and would not likely choose it again. But one always has to be fair and we only tried two dishes. Others speak highly of the restaurant so perhaps we didn't choose wisely.

This restaurant, tucked in the corner of the Glen Lennox shopping center and almost hidden by another, is peaceful. The menu is very interesting with riffs on several Asian cuisines. But because I am sensitive to fiery foods I found that even though I tried to order carefully I couldn’t escape. I got the spring rolls which had hot red pepper; wrappers were a bit thick and while the initial flavor was good the fire built with each bite. I also got dumplings, again spicy even without the dipping sauce. Atmosphere is pleasant. Service was abstracted.

We went for lunch after finding out that Lime and Basil existed. The restaurant is located in downtown and there is easy parking nearby. The service was excellent and we were well taken care of. We had the Vegetarian Delight with shrimp and Egg Noodles. They were quite good but needed a bit more seasoning. The table had different sauces to add and the meal was quite bland without the additional sauce. Everything was very fresh and had a lovely presentation. My only wish was that the seasoning had been a bit more flavorful.Excellent service and great presentation. We will go back and see how things are a second time.

Akai Hana ("Red Flower") delivers on its food. Their menu is straightforward and understandable and their quality is consistent. I have eaten here many, many times over the years. It is a cozy setting, not the place to go if you and your sweetheart are having a knock-down, drag-out fight, though, okay, so take heed on that one!! There are a number of 2 and 4 top tables. Not a great place for a large group, in my opinion. Just because it is not a large restaurant. There is a small sushi bar if you like the whole prep thing, too.

How refreshing to find a restaurant that delivers authentic Chinese food. The place might be past its prime/critical-peak, but they have an extensive menu loaded with Sichuan-regional options (fuqi feipian, twice-cooked pork, etc.), a friendly staff, and lots of familiar homestyle dishes for local homesick Chinese (like us) and non-Chinese looking to try a range of options that actual Chinese people eat (keep that in mind when reading these reviews... trust the Asians)! We mixed it up and got the "fuqi feipian" (thin sliced beef in chili oil with tripe, served cold as an appetizer), a bowl of the beef noodle soup (fantastic. loads of tender, tasty beef), and yu-xiang (hot chili/garlic) eggplant -- our personal faves when we just want something satisfying that reminds us of home. They even had pig ears on the menu but ran out that day.If we lived in Chapel Hill, we'd be regulars.

Back to Chapel Hill for graduation week-end, and we again partook of this delightful Asian fusion venue. We enjoyed the Tempura Asparagus and Crispy Spring Roll appetizers. I then had the special Blue Fin Tuna “3 Ways” plate. While technically a Small plate, this was satisfying and filling. Mrs Gyr gave high marks to the Indochine Chicken Curry, which was flavorful and not too spicy. Pleasant ambiance, delightfully friendly service, and great desserts: Coconut cake, and “Elements Pie” (aka Belgian chocolate mouse). Elements is highly recommended!

Want fried chicken or a tamale or sobu noodles? Got it. The menu is varied but with a large business crowd, everyone found something to their liking. The fried chicken is more like schnitzel and was a huge hit. I had the salmon and it felt indulgent - crispy on the outside and served on a bed of creamy mashed. Oddly, my favorite part was the side dish of green beans in a garlicky soy sauce. Yum!
