L'Oriental Couscous

Restaurant - Takeaway - Home Delivery Specialty Couscous (Specialty Maghreb - North Africa)

We stopped there on an August Sunday when it seemed that every eatery in Caen Centre was closed for the August Holiday. Our host, speaking in French with my wife, was surprised that we were Americans and we actually were familiar with couscous. We eat it more than we eat rice at home. We both ordered the couscous dinner and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was well cooked, the couscous and the “gravy” were to die for, and the sides were very tasty. In fact, my wife said that having been in Normandy for a week, it was the best meal we had on our trip! The restaurant is described as African, but menu is Algerian (which I guess technically makes it African). If we had stayed longer in Caen, we would have eaten there again. Super place!Merci à vous et Bon séjour en France.Il est vrai que nous avons été surpris de voir des Américains connaitre aussi bien le couscous.La Gastronomie n'a pas de Frontières......C'est super ......Bon Retour chez vous.Malika KOUBA

Walk past it and you might miss it; this is a small cafe-restaurant with seating for around 25 customers and serving Iranian & Middle Eastern dishes. It is comfortable and popular, and is usually quite full, always a good sign. Everybody gets a warm welcome from Monsieur le Patron: singles, couples, families with children; there is something for everyone. The walls are hung with colourful tapestries, saddle-bags and other Middle Eastern artefacts. The range of dishes is limited; don’t expect a hugely varied banquet; there are samosas, salads, aubergine dishes, and delicious sweets. I would recommend a combined dish called ‘La Découverte’, which consists of three or four typical items served with perfumed rice. This can be accompanied by mint tea, or a range of alcoholic beverages including Sangria at 2€. There is good coffee to follow, and a nice range of Oriental sweets such as ‘Corne de Gazelle’ and Loukoum (almond-filled croissants and Turkish delight). Service is swift; the management are very friendly and the Patron is attentive and always willing to chat. Overall this is a cosy, very recommendable establishment in the centre of Caen.

It is the second time that I came to this restaurant. We celebrated my mother-in-law's birthday today, which proved to be a very wise choice! We took the same dish as last time we've been here: Mezzé, the 10 dishes, including 5 cold dishes and 5 hot dishes with the special bread. I would say..there is no word that I can describe the happiness of tasting all of them! I can't count how many times my mother-in-law said "C'est très très bon!!" If there is a 6 stars in Trip Advisor, I will give it to them!I took Thé gourmand for dessert! It's the Mint Tea with 3 little desserts. The one with orange flower taste and milk, hmm..seems like you can smell the flower for real but it's too not strong to make you dizzy. As I'm very sensitive to smell and any kind of strong smell can make me feel dizzy, but this one is right at the point!! If I can find a perfume like this, I would be so delighted! And the mint tea..As a Chinese, I would say we can't call the tea in France as real tea. Whatever big brand like Lipton or the so-called very "in" brand like Kusmi Tea, it doesn't have any real tea taste for me, but the mint tea in this place made me surprised, very tasty and smells so good, they said they made by themselves, I think so! Do not miss it, tea lovers.Decoration, great! Service, warm and nice as always! For sure that this restaurant is underestimated in Trip Advisor, we should give more compliments and encouragement to restaurants like this! Please do not miss this special experience if you visit Caen!

This place has it all - typical Moroccan décor, great friendly service and fantastic food. It's also right near the centre of the city, in the best-known restaurant area. It was so good we ate there 3 times in 4 days! It's hard to pick highlights from the several different things we tried from the menu because everything was so good, but if pressed I'd have to go for the Brick with tuna and lemon, which was one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Wandered through the restaurants in the historic centre failing to find anywhere that would serve a meal for a vegetarian. Just a bit further up the hill, with a fabulous view of both the cathedral and the castle, is this great little Indian restaurant with Punjab specialities, friendly and attentive staff, and reasonable prices compared to down the road! Superb meal - very happy. Well worth the visit.
