Yamasho Sushi Steakhouse

Afraid I'm running against the grain here. We had the bento box in order to sample several of Yamasho's offerings plus a mixed sushi platter. The bento's hibachi beef was strips of meat swimming in a sticky sauce, lacking the seared braise and delicate flavor of the genuine article. Presentation was fairly hum-drum. Tempura was fine. Our sushi lacked firmness and flavor. It rates barely passable. Miso was good as were the salads. Portions are ample.Yamasho's menu includes a number of other non-Japanese Asian dishes. Perhaps the lack of culinary focus accounts for the so-so outcome. On the plus side, service was cheerful and efficient and ambiance sort of classic shopping mall Asian eatery style. Prices are reasonable. So, I confess surprise at the many positive reviews, which drew us here. The upshot on Yamasho for us is that it was mediocre. For better Japanese fare, try Kyoto or Firudo. There are others in CNY we've yet to visit, but plan to in the near future.

Wife, daughter and son-in-law had dinner there. We had a bottle of wine, and the young folks had a couple of beers. We split the shrimp dumplings, octopus, king roll, tamarind duck, and the prig pow. All were excellent. Service was good, the appetizers came out 1 at the time, so we could split and share. The meals came out together, and we split those also. The prices were exactly what I expected from a high end restaurant.

Retreat

We were making a pilgrimage East and stayed in Liverpool on our way. Looking over the area dining options, The Retreat caught our eye. This venue has been popular, operating in Liverpool for some forty-five years. Although remodeled across the years, the restaurant pub retains links to its roots with its lodge-style appearance. They have a large free parking lot adjacent. They have a couple areas of inside seating as well as a large outside patio, which includes a separate outside bar wherein live entertainment is offered. They have a quite extensive menu that includes Appetizers, Soups & Salads, Sandwiches, Burgers, and Beef, Poultry & Seafood Entrees. I had made up my mind that seafood would be my choice, before we even arrived. We chose outside seating, as the weather was beautiful. The view from the patio is nothing special, however, being outside on a nice day is always our choice. Our waitress was quite nice, friendly and efficient. Even on a Wednesday evening, The Retreat was quite busy. I will say our service was not the speediest, but we were in no rush to be anywhere else. We started with beverages and I had (& enjoyed) a dozen Steamed Clams. My other half chose the Vegetable Quesadilla (asparagus, roasted peppers, mushrooms, Asiago cheese, artichokes and spinach stuffed into a grilled tortilla with Monterey Jack cheddar and diced tomatoes, served with salsa and sour cream). She raved about this quesadilla, the vegetables were packed into a delicious shell and the size was huge. She frequently opts for quesadillas when we go out. This was one of her top two favorites ever. In my case, I continued my seafood theme with their Boston Harbor Bay Haddock (fillet of fresh Atlantic Haddock, carefully broiled with a lemon Dijon panko crust, cradled on a bed of New England clam risotto) and a side salad. The "side" salad was huge, with fresh, crisp greens and vegetables - excellent. The Haddock and the risotto continued the theme of very large portions. In fact, as we had watched our sandwiches and entrees served to those around us, the definite trend was large, great looking portions. The clam risotto was spectacular, rich and creamy with nice pieces of clam throughout. In fact, the risotto was only surpassed by the excellent Haddock filet, which was perfectly cooked. My spouse and I could not have been happier with our dining choice. If we did not live so far away, we would easily return here frequently as their menu had so many intriguing choices. We hope to have a future opportunity to dine here.

We went to China Pavilion because a friend said they served GF chinese food. They were terrific. Everything on the menu can be prepared GF, even egg rolls. Because a family member is GF, the restaurant understands the needs of those with GF Sensitivity or Celiac disease. They were more than helpful and the food was delicious. There is no additional charge for GF preparation. Highly recommend!!

Mitsuba Hibachi and Sushi

A family dinner - chosen quickly because we had been attending a live music event outside and sensed a sudden rainstorm. We opted for hibachi and were rewarded with an immensely entertaining chef who had adults and children in gales of laughter within minutes with jokes, songs and impersonations, along with the theatrical flames and egg-breaking that always makes hibachi fun. When it slipped out that there was a birthday in the group we were presented with a surprise cake and a giant mask, which I was instructed to wear while waitresses sang a 'shake your booty' song. I'm normally very cynical and English about this kind of thing, but it was done with such enthusiasm that I got caught up in the whole thing and... well, shook it.Oh, and the food was great - and very good value.
