Black Olive Greek Cuisine

I absolutely love this place. A small, independent restaurant run by a Greek chef. The food is always authentic. My wife's favorites include the octopus appetizer and grilled lamb chops. I think the calamari is always the best but we do not argue, we order all three. We both like sticking with a selection of appetizers. Order one at a time or maybe two, so everything stays hot. BYOB makes this a place to go to regularly without breaking the bank and we do whenever we visit NJ.

We were really excited to learn that a new Mediterranean restaurant was opening near us. We decided to try it for lunch. We won't be back!Our first bad vibe came when our server asked us if we wanted anything to drink, and we said just water. He went over to the cooler and got us two bottles of water. Let's drive up the final tab for lunch! We thought that was a bit aggressive, to say the least, since we hadn't mentioned wanting bottled water. We then asked for tap water which we received.While we were deciding on lunch, we put in an order for hummus and veggies. We have to say that the hummus was truly the worst hummus we have ever had. The previous "winner" of that dubious award for us was a place where they hadn't finished the hummus enough in the food processor, and it was was chunky and grainy. But at least it tasted like hummus!! At Tabboulee, the hummus had absolutely no taste of tahini at all; in fact, it had no taste at all! And it was a very odd texture, not at all like any other hummus we have ever had.The slight red color (maybe red peppers were used in the recipe?) added to the strangeness.We did not care for our salads either. Again, they were basically lacking in seasoning and taste. I did not finish my falafel salad. My husband was not impressed with his chicken tikka gyro salad, either.This restaurant was formerly a pizza place. They have three tables seating four and then a big table seating six. This is not a restaurant with atmosphere. On the table is a napkin dispenser asking patrons to be green and use only the napkins they need. The napkins, by the way, are as flimsy as they come! I had to use more than one, because they were so flimsy.Other than the problem at the beginning, service was good. Our server checked back with us from time to time. However, the food is the reason we go to a restaurant, and the food at Tabboulee will not bring us back. We can think of at least three nearby restaurants with the same or similar menus and prices where the food has flavor and seasoning.I am sorry to hear your visit to Tabboulee being lack luster. After being in the restaurant business with four other restaurants, I understand the meaning of service & taste. To start, we always offer patrons a drink & always proceed to retrieve if for them. When water is ordered, we proceed to bottles first, because patrons are reluctant to want tap water. We were not trying to build a check for an extra dollar. The hummus we make daily receives high accolades in both Tabboulee & The Gab Shak (our sister location) in Wrightstown. We are sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it.The salads both you and your husband ordered, may I say, cleaned the plate were made fresh to order. If anyone is unhappy with their meal in any restaurant they should immediately flag an employee down and voice their complaint.There are people who really take the business and job to heart and enjoy servicing people and of course making them happy.As far as the ambience goes Tabboulee is brand new, clean and has a unique look that people enjoy with some bright and not so bright color. In closing, with 7-10 dollar lunches , we again are sorry you did not appreciate the napkins. Keep in mind if you ever owned a business , cost is vital.Management

To celebrate an event, I took my wife to Estia. We'd heard good things about it, but we'd never eaten there.After we'd been served complimentary hummus and warm, crusty bread, we ordered the kefalograviera cheese saganaki, one of our favorite Greek dishes, for our appetizer. Served while still flaming, it was a great way to start our meal.My entree was the octopus, perfectly charcoal grilled and served over fava puree. My wife chose the lamb chops with fried potatoes and tzatziki. Dessert was ekmek, pistachios layered between phyllo, custard, and whipped cream.It was an excellent meal in an attractive dining room, with attentive, friendly service. The prices, however, were too high. If they were lower, we would return often, so we'll reserve it for special occasions.
