La Bodeguilla del Bar Jamon

The taste of our dishes, the exquisiteness of our homemade desserts and the expertise of our professionals together with the affection that puts the family in daily work, makes La Bodeguilla is today one of the local reference of El Puerto.

Visited here last year during a short visit to El Puerto de Santa Maria & immediately headed back there again this year for our first meal as soon as we arrived. Late afternoon tapas/sharing plates - all delicious & really interesting combinations. I just absolutely love the salad with rosemary ice cream. ... salad leaves with jamon / payoyo cheese & frozen balls of rosemary dressing...genius...Yum! Really good service, lovely wines/sherries & a reasonable price too. Can´t wait for the next time.

The restaurant is is a great location and the service you could not fault. I ordered tuna, which was delicious but a bit less salt would have been better. Although I read the menu in Spanish and English I did expected some side but what I had was a small amount of green shredded vegetable, but not much of a portion of the ratio to the meat. I am probably old fashioned or just not so familiar with high end eating but beautifully situated and exceptionally clean. Please do not let these comments deterr as it may just be up your kind of thing. I believe their black bread fish cake meal is delicious...I will have that next time.

Setting and decor are beautiful whether in the chic restaurant or out on the garden patio. Unlike many modern places where the absence of soft furnishings makes everything reverberate and conversation almost impossible, measures have been taken to absorb sound whilst retaining the sleek modern look. Breakfast was simple and delicious. Dinner (we got there early by local standards and were glad we did as it filled up on a Wednesday evening) began well with tasty starters of tomato and anchovy tostada and Cesar salad. Our main courses were disappointing for different reasons: the mushroom risotto was seriously under seasoned and condiments are not generally provided on tables here. As my Spanish is very limited and so is the waiter’s English, I ploughed on, grateful for the surprise of bits of salty ham. My husband’s sea bass was smothered in so much salty sauce that the subtle flavour of the fish was overwhelmed. He enjoyed his caramel like pudding with ice cream and crisp chocolate flakes. The wine-as you would expect at a world famous bodega-was superb. We sampled some of the sherries and a brandy. Delicious. The restaurant was somewhat understaffed but the waiter was charming and coped well with the workload.

To make it short and simple, the ONLY good thing about the restaurant is that they have a kid's zone where the children can play after dinner. Otherwise, extremely loud place with the music playing making hard to have a peaceful conversation. Food is nothing out of the ordinary.

Recommended by our hotel (Duques de Medinaceli) we thoroughly enjoyed our evening at this restaurant. It was busy with locals which is always a good sign - especially in a quiet period. The decor was lovely and the service welcoming and very efficient. The food was excellent and well presented. Would certainly go again if we were in the area.

Probably the best restaurant in town in terms of the food and wine on offer, and while not cheap, was certainly less expensive than the equivalent in a big city.Waiters are very professional and know their stuff - they can advise you on any food or wine in case you aren't sure and they even have English menus, which have been translated well.Went here for my birthday and would certainly go back for the jamón and the solomillo alone. Worth a final evening blow-out if you don't go beforehand!

Aponiente Angel Leon

Reviewed By 1234texas

This is the first time we have ever had a bucket list item that is food related. We had heard about what we were doing on this trip and really looked forward to it. We can sum it up in one word--Incredible! The real question is where to begin? At the beginning works for me! We drove through an area that looked much like a scene from a sci-fi movie: After the Holocaust! It is a empty and desolate area outside of town, but when you arrive at Aponiente you are amazed at how wonderful the new building is next to a historic industrial building--we found out later that the renovation/new build is really part of the very old tide operated olive press. In any case, the construction and renovation is outstanding--flawless in design and decoration inside and out. The spectacular (Zen like) garden in the middle of the site is a real sight. It is an mature olive orchard with well designed raised beds.Had we not had our meeting (in his new museum and teaching facility where he has displays of his recipes, the dishes and silver from El Bullli) ) in Barcelona with the world famous chef Feffan Adria of el bulli, we would not have been prepared for this amazingly well orchestrated experience. Once again, we were going to have a dinner in a restaurant of one of his proteges--and another good one at that! This is the third one of his "students" that we visited on this trip. First, we went to Disfrutar in Barcelona-- with chef Oriol Castro. We then went to La Botica in Matapozuelos - outside Valladolid - chef Miguel Ángel De la Cruz (who gave us a briefing on the details of the methodology developed by chef Feffan Adria. I have written up both and have detailed the approach, as I understand it, in the La Botica review on TripAdvisor. As an aside, all of the dishes in the 70+ courses we had were different--no duplications at all! Even if they did the same dish, it would be different because of the deconstruction/reconstruction process they use to build a new experience for the customers. The results for all three is nothing short of magical. To get back to the flow of this review. We were met at the front gate by a team of Maitre Des who greeted us warmly (as if we were old friends) and explained the nature of what we would doing for the next 3 to 4 hours. We were taken to a beautiful (in design, decoration, and ambiance) "little" outbuilding where we were served the first 5 or so appetizer courses--with wine of course. The chefs were putting the final touches on the dishes in the room and the staff explained the food and wines we were being served. They (the food, the wine, and the staff) were great--well organized, efficient, and elegant in their moves around the room. We were then escorted through the garden to the main dining room building. They explained the history of the site and had us look through the window to see the movement of the water that worked the olive presses years ago. The Michelin sculpture is wonderful, the preserved foundation is well done, the walking hall is elegant, the bathroom is an art form in itself with a super creative unisex sink/mirror/waterfall centerpiece and the chef on display doing appetizer decorating "for real, but also for show" is really great. We were then passed on the the head waiter of the dining room, who explained why our group of 13 people simply "had to be" split into 3 tables of 3, 2, and 8 because to put us at one table would not allow the staff to serve us correctly. They were so serious on this point that they had told oru tour organizer in advance that they were ready to cancel our reservation if we did not agree to the seating arrangement! At the price of this meal, that was (in retrospect) an incredible commitment to their principles! And, at the conclusion of the meal, we understood the reasons for their demands! The staff really does need room to perform their "dance" as they serve the tables. The food and drink are presented by waiters and wine stewards that actually appear to "float" around the room as if they are performing a dance. It is beautiful to watch them--every one knows exactly where they should be and what they should be doing every second they are "on stage." After the final course, we were escorted out of dining room and sent away at the front gates as if we were leaving the home of friends. To see all this in action is a wonderful managerial exercise that few organizations can duplicate. The training that goes into this has to be impressive because the passion that they have shows through in every aspect of the experience. We will never forget this meal! For those who are interested in the details (every step that follows a logical progression) of how the meal/experience is created, here are my Cliff Notes from the 4 experiences we had with the chefs. I am certain I did not get all the subtle points, but this is a good start for you:1. The team meets to determine the dishes that they want to develop from existing recipes.2. The whole brainstorming & "hands on" creating process is accurately documented in detail to help with further enhancements and possible future adaptations. 3, They "deconstruct" the dish to learn it's basics, and "reconstruct" the dish with their creative minds and talents to make it be "the best it can be."4. Next, the team looks at their finished product (the food and new recipe) to get a "sense" for the artistic elements the dish exhibits and what it communicates to the customer--from that point, they ask themselves, "what is the best way to present this to the customer to enhance the beauty of the food and to visual experience?" They are willing to present the food on a dish, in a box, hidden beneath rice, on a small plate specifically designed for the dish, in glass, ....... they have NO SELF IMPOSED CONSTRAINTS on themselves! 5. They determine what wine or liquor would best compliment the dish/experience, and in what glass (or any other vessel form) should the drink be served? 6. They determine EXACTLY how the dish should be served/presented to the diner--this is the who, what, when, where, why, & how of the planning process so every person knows exactly what they should be doing every second of the serving process! The result is that the servers look as if they are doing dance. 7. Their creative process LEAVES NOTHING TO CHANCE--it is all thought through in exquisite detail to determine the best way to make the process work on every course presented throughout the entire meal 8. They recognize that the physical environment is a key component of the experience. They are always determining what the restaurant must look like (table/chairs and how they are arranged, table coverings/napkins/silver and serving pieces), art on the walls, sculptures, views of the kitchen...) how you will be met at the front door and how you will be treated throughout he meal and how you will be sent out the door to assure that you will have only wonderful memories!
