Tierra Astur Aviles

Located in the heart of Aviles, just a few meters from City Hall and the popular Galiana Street, in front of the famous Church of St. Francisco. Distributed in two spacious floors, where casks and bottles of cider still have a major role in our furniture

We stumbled across Tierra Astur by accident on a visit to Aviles, which is in itself a great city to visit. We sat outside and enjoyed the street life enjoying our meal with well-priced house wine. (I can't drink cider after a misspent youth growing up in Somerset) and had a great meal with wonderful service. It wasn't until one of wandered inside to use the facilities that we realised how cool it was. Massive cider barrels everywhere, huge bottle displays on the ceilings, open kitchens, secluded dining rooms upstairs and open cider tables. All in all a brilliant place thoroughly recommended and amazingly good value. Watch out for the waiters pouring cider for customers. At first, I thought it was a cheesy trick. They basically hold the glass as low as possible and pour with the bottle held as high as possible, often looking straight ahead. Over the course of the week though we noticed locals performing a less extreme version of this everywhere. Must be an Asturian thing. Pretty cool though to watch.

La Esperanza

Locals recommended this restaurant and it was totally worth the walk. Very nice people and the best food. It's all rather special and they have almost no vegetarian options, except for cheese. My sister had pork and my parents tuna (I was the annoying cheese-eating person) and they loved it. All the food is fresh and prepared in a special way. Afterwards we had a dessert called 'tosenillo'. It's like a delicious, very sweet flan...And once again: not expensive!

La Botella

La Botella has been around for far far longer than I have been visiting Aviles (which is around 20 years now) and this time I went here with my wife and mother in law to have lunch. We took three dishes, calamares en su tinta, Pulo a la Gallega and fritos de Pixin. All the dishes were very good, especially the calamares and the pixin. We washed down the whole meal with a bottle of Jose Pariente which is a nice moderately priced white wine from the Rueda. The waiter was helpful and friendly and we enjoyed the visit.
