I live nearby and Al Fresco is my go-to eatery when I don't feel like cooking. Why? Good food, friendly service and an amazing view of Laggo Maggiore. The pizzas and risottos are delish (especially the red wine risotto with radicchio and mullet) but the sizzling steak on a hot stone is my dish of choice - perfectly grilled and served with home fries and seasonal veggies. This is one of the best spots to eat in the area and well worth the drive or short walk uphill from town.

Enjoyed my lunch and discussions with the owner and gentleman in the next table. Family style, tasty and easygoing, almost like the outside dining room for locals. You can eat quietly and talk small or big topics, but better try out your German or Italian, even if a bit rusty!

My husband and I have been visiting the SEVEN restaurant several times in the past five years. It has never occurred to me that I got treated as an unwelcomed second class guest in my entire life than this time:A friend from South-East Asia came visiting me in Switzerland. We just drove from Zermatt directly to Ascona, to the restaurant SEVEN, because I wanted to show her a nice spot in Ascona to eat out.Since we wore our trekking gear from the Zermatt hike, we were about to be seated at a table with a wall right in front of us(!), although other tables were available with views to the lake and the setting sun.We then politely asked to be seated to the neighbour table with lake view. Which the chief of service (the blond guy, our guess from the behaviour of the other waiters) hesitantly allowed us to be seated. We had to ask for the wine and food menue twice and waited 15’ until we asked three waiters if we could order wine and meals. We waited another 35’ until our meals were being served.Although we gave them the feedback as we did now in this review, nothing had been untertaken. We consumed meals and wines for CHF 210.— and even paid for the espresso. We would like to outline that Celine and Claudio were very kind to us and committed. Without them, we would have left right away. The food was good. The wine (Unique, Donatsch, 2009) was excellent. However, I will not return to Seven again.Dear Benji, allow us to correct you: we do not treat people wearing trekking gear (or jeans, or leggings) as second class customers. We do, however, reserve our best tables to the customers who took care to book one. In high season, diners who "pop in" last minute, might have to settle for the less scenic tables, despite us striving to accomodate everyone with the best we can offer. As for that particular evening, we had just been "greeted" by a summer storm. Diners seated outside had to be quicky transferred inside, with their dishes, bottles, glasses... an organizational nightmare, swiftly and expertly taken care of by our motivated staff. Then, as the storm cleared, we had to ensure everyone got accomodated back to their tables outside.. that's why you saw empty tables, but were told by our manager that they were not free, and that's why, unfortunately, we did accumulate a little delay in serving you and our other kind customers. Next time, we advise you to book your table in advance, to guarantee the best sightseeing spot to enjoy your meal.. unfortunately we can only cross our fingers to keep the summer storms away!
