Charlie T's Specialty Meats

Reviewed By Travelcrow

Came in off I-10 to Breaux Bridge looking for lunch before visiting friends in Lafayette. Stopped in at Pilot for gas and inquired about a good place to eat. Ms. Lillian, behind the counter, had a plate lunch with her, and recommended that instead of going to one of the big name places along 328, we go down a few side streets and try Charlie T's. Well, that was like finding gold! A couple of stop lights, and a turn down Berard St., and we were in a modest little white store front. Might have been little but they sure pack a lot in that shop. From cracklins to boudin balls to stuffed catfish and smoked sausage, Charlie T's has it all. We bought links of seafood boudin and spicy pork boudin, as well as a small bag of cracklin. The folks tending the store were so nice and helpful. Just wished we lived nearby so we could make the place a regular habit. Had our lunch in the car out in the parking lot. Charlie T's does not have tables inside. There is one small table out in the parking lot near the building but it was too cold for that. Some of the best boudin we have enjoyed. So good that on the way back to Florida three days later, we stopped in and bought numerous frozen packages of stuffed catfish, chicken and rabbit sausage, pork and seafood boudin, boudin balls, andouille sausage and several more. Got to visit with the owner and his wife and learned that they are planning to move to a larger location sometime soon. That will be great as long as they don't lose the personal touch and authenticity of their little gem of a specialty meat market.

On my travel I discovered this, somewhat hidden place! Beautifully run family restaurant with fantastic traditions and "aged" recipes. Food is excellently flavoured, well portioned and reasonably priced. You can tell when someone loves what they do! To my surprise, the menu is very extensive, for a small family restaurant, no wonder people driving for miles to fin and dine there! And don't forget try the cakes! Daily made, absolutely delicious, especially the chocolate...

For our 25th Anniversary celebration we felt like trying something different. The inspiration came from none other than our dear departed Anthony Bourdain. Bourdain was quoted as saying that the quality of the food in Lafayette, Breaux Bridge and Eunice was some of the finest he's sampled anywhere. Reading this statement reminded me that we don't get off the beaten path enough any more and I hadn't checked out Breaux Bridge for quite some time now. When I checked out the online menu for Cafe Sydnie Mae, I was convinced this was a place I'd love to try. With these original, special offerings, if they've got a chef who is half decent, it's bound to be great. Well...let me tell you - we found that not only is the chef half decent, Executive Chef Bonnie Breaux is THE BOMB!I kicked things off with a "Cajun Cosmo" - the best Cosmo that has ever crossed my lips...I kid you not! I was driving, so I limited the consumption to one, but MAN did I leave wanting more! Hubby had an Old-Fashioned, and the coolest thing happened. They placed a straw-like feature in the drink, and when he checked it out, it was actually a piece of sugar cane! He had so much fun chewing on that cane like he did when he was a kid growing up in New Iberia. I enjoyed tasting it myself...turns out it's quite a conductor for the liquor in the glass and holds the flavor well :-)We ordered a cup of Shrimp and Corn Bisque - it was one of the best I've ever tried. We were trying to identify the flavor we were both sensing. Chef Bonnie came over and explained to us it was a local roasted red pepper. We REALLY enjoyed it tremendously. She knows JUST how to combine JUST the right ingredients to blend the perfect concoctions every time! For our entrees, we decided to order two separate dishes so we could sample two different things. I ordered the Teche Wellington, which is composed of Louisiana Crawfish, Jumbo Lump Crabmeat and Shrimp in a Sherry Cream Sauce, served over Seafood-Stuffed Pastry and the side of your choice. (Which for me was Creole Cream Cheese Grits)My husband decided on the Shrimp and Eggplant Stuffed Flounder with a Stuffed Potato Cake. The Teche Wellington was one of the most amazing things I've ever eaten. The creativity displayed in designing this dish is so evident. It was off the charts. Even BETTER were the Creole Cream Cheese Grits...WOW! Hubby tried it too and thoroughly enjoyed it all. I'm not really a fan of fish, so he got to eat most of his flounder dish by himself. But I did taste and it was very good.Of course by this time Chef Bonnie had been out to the table to visit several times, so she then took it upon herself to go back in the kitchen and prepare a "special" Happy Anniversary bread pudding dish for us. In addition, I had a good cup of strong coffee mixed with Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur - what an amazing way to end the perfect meal! Before we had been at Cafe Sydnie Mae for 5 minutes, I had already decided I will be returning...soon. After meeting Chef Bonnie Breaux and tasting her SUBSTANTIAL food preparation talent, not only will I be going back, but I'll be inviting friends! So if any of our local folks are ready to check out the best new thing...we've found it for you!

Loved this place last time we visited. I gather just changed hands ...again..... some young people behind serving counter talking to each other. One eventually came over and we offered drinks off the menus. She said ok then came back twice to gradually tell us evening we had ordered no longer was served so first off she had no clue what she was serving and they are using menu from another era .Why? We stuck simple then. Two cold cans that we could see in the fridge and a coffee. Coffee never came as they went back to talking to each other behind serving counter. Basically forgotten and staff too busy with friends. No idea of how to work in a restaurant. Wrong menu and such poor service we don’t dare go back for breakfast as although the menu looks good I have no idea is they still cook , or what the food would be like given this place exists for a staff social and not to serve guests. So so let down Will totally avoid

This place is simply amazing.. We always stop by on our way home to Texas from visiting Florida. this is our 3rd year consecutivly. Don't expect anything fancy. Do not let the look of this place fool you, looks like an old gas station turned into a small restaurant with about 4-5 tables. Its pretty much a ma and pa establishment, that will deliver a huge punch. Crawfish pies are a must to try along with the boudin balls and fried chicken or alligator or shrimp baskets ...crawfish or shrimp etuffee is good too. sprinkle your meals with their homemade spices for an extra spicy delicious kick!EVERYTHINK IS GOOD You won't go wrong !

Carol, Kathy, and Therese from Mississippi spent five days at "La Petite Voie de Therese" (Cottage), and I decided that they would enjoy a great experience at Buck & Johnnie's. A good friend of mine, Joyce suggested that I bring the ladies on Thursday evening to listen to Yvette Landry, (Singer & Guitar Player) , Richard Comeaux ( Steel Guitar Player,) and a famous Cajun musician by the name of Warren Storm. Wow! We were treated with two glasses of wine, and the Cobb Salad, Margarita Pizza, and the pasta dishes were just perfect. The ladies of Mississippi were excited to climb up the steps of an old Chevy Car Garage and Service Station. (Buck & Johnnie's). I was so happy that the ladies had a marvelous time and hopefully, I will see them again. Of course, I will bring these lovely ladies from Mississippi back to Buck and Johnnie's where the food and musicgo very well with a glass of wine.

Love the decor and the setup of this restaurant. Great service from the time you enter to the time you leave. Food is spectacular. Great flavor and properly proportioned. My only complaint was that it was noisy. Everyone seemed to be talking so loud as to talk over the table next to them which made the place loud.Thank you for your review! Yes, it can get noisy when we are slammed, such as when we have a pre-concert crowd. It is not typically that loud. Thanks again for your wonderful review of our food, service and decor!Steve S.
