I ran across a Killeen, TX Daily Hearld article about Walter Brown, owner of "Big Hoss" BBQ, and Pat Kern, another supportive citizen who did an exceptional service by feeding 220 soldiers from nearby Fort Hood. Brown went to pay Kern $1700 for work done

I've read a lot of reviews. Wasn't really looking forward to taking some out of town friends here, but I was sick and tired of the same old chain places. So I warned my friends that I'd not been here, and it had some not so good reviews along with some good reviews. But we were pleasantly surprised. The food was average or above. Some guest said it was very good. Some said it was just good. Nobody had anything negative to say. The service was pleasant, but not fast. But we weren't looking for fast. The atmosphere was different. Location was different. The menu was more varied than I'd expected. I'll go back. And be happy to take my out of town guest. If you have young kids, they can feed the goats and alpacas.

I ate here twice in the week I was staying in Killeen and loved it!First was the BBQ Combo I think it was called with a spare rib, hot link, and some righteous Texas brisket. The meat were meaty and portion generous given the price point. I sided with collards and mac and cheese. Both were top-notch!Second was the Soul Food box with smoked ham hocks, collards, and potato salad. The hocks were meaty and rich and even now I'm day-dreaming about them. Another excellent box of down home deliciousness and for sure I'll revisit next time I'm in Killeen!

Butler's BBQ is a top-notch BBQ joint! We enjoyed the chicken and brisket on our first visit. Very tender and flavorful, with the perfect amount of seasoning and sauce, which comes on the meat. There are plenty of sides to choose from: mac-n-cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, and corn bread were our choices. It is a cozy restaurant with very friendly people working there. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed!

We had Bones' Cracked Rib BBQ cater our event for 200 people. Every person I dealt with was very friendly, and they gave us a good price with some variety of sides and meats. The food was delicious when it was finally presented to our group, and, yes, the brisket was my favorite, too (we had chicken, brisket, and sausage). The green beans were quite the hit as well.Easy to work with, friendly staff, hard-working servers, and good BBQ. Give them a try for your next catering event.

I'm never unsatisfied when I visit this restaurant. Aside the great customer service, the food is amazing! I'm hooked on the fried fish and mac and cheese, but I make it an effort to try at least 1 different item everytime I go. The downside is that, it's packed during lunchtime. So, ya best bet is to either get there early or call in.

Petty's BBQ

This bbq place had an Asian lady taking orders who barely spoke English. Then they had religious pictures hung in the bathroom. The pulled pork was a little dry, the potato salad was mushy and tasted vinegary. The place was small but clean and the tables looked new. The floor was slippery.

There seems to be a cult following for Rudy’s. Being from out-of-town, I chose to give it a try. We ended up going twice. So warning.. everything is ala crate and you need to serve yourself. There are also signs that remind you that your mom is not there and you should pick up after yourself! (No, really). I wanted to tell that that I did not already pay my mom for lunch, but, well... I asked for 1/2 pound of brisket and got (and charged for) 3/4 of a pound. You want potato salad. Get it yourself (and pay $2.49 for a single serving). You want simmering baked beans. Tough luck, get it out of the fridge yourself. I chose banana pudding and it was simply awful. The meat was fine but you have to sauce it yourself. Want some Texas toast?? Warm rolls? Nope! You get a couple slices of cold Wonder bread. Almost $25 for a self-serve lunch. I think I will pass next time.
