Meathouse

Reviewed By Gatorgolfer

We wanted to drive our convertible on some nice twisty roads, so we picked Meathouse as a destination about an hour from home, based largely on TA recommendations. The restaurant is long and skinny, with booths in the front and some tables in the back. We were after the lunch rush, if there was one....we were the only customers at about 1 PM. The decor is meh, and kind of worn, but ok for a joint. The menu has burgers, sandwiches, plus bbq chicken, brisket, pulled pork and ribs. Also specials like pork chops, chicken fried steak, etc.We each ordered a half rack of ribs, which come with fries, baked beans and slaw. First the sides were very good, and baked beans were even excellent. The ribs remind me of ribs we used to get in Wisconsin, not cooked long and slow, no obvious bark on them, or smoky taste, cooked until they fall off the bone, and slathered with a lot of sweet sauce to produce some "bbq" taste. So, if that is how you like them, you will indeed like them. If you like them so that they have some "chew" and you have to tug the meat off the bone with your teeth, and if you like dry rub, or smokey so that there is bark and obvious smoke penetration into the meat, and served dry with a variety of sauces that you can or cannot add....then you won't like them.So...i'll bet the burgers and daily specials are good, and maybe or maybe not some of the other bbq items, but we both thought the ribs were mediocre...

I'll start off by saying I like Roane Street Grill and their food is generally great. Today however, the service was lacking. We waited up front for probably 3-4 minutes before anyone acknowledged us to be seated. The first waitress took our drink order but never brought our drinks. A second waitress took our drink order again and brought them out. We ordered our meals which took around 25-30 minutes to receive. Other tables were seated after us and got their food much quicker than we did. They blamed it on being busy, yet the restaurant wasn't half full at the time. Lastly, we were charged extra for a side that came with the meal. We discussed it with the waitress and she removed the charge. It seems that more cooks and/or servers are needed to help RSG function at it's best. I think the food is good and I want to support a locally owned business, but with service like this they make it really hard. Please work for improvement!

Busy, busy day here! We met our kids so we were a party of 6, and the wait was lengthy, but understandable. It was close to noon but we all ordered breakfast. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. Personally, I am not a fan of the hash brown casserole although it must be popular. I asked for crispy bacon, but it wasn’t. Due to it being Mother’s Day, they did a pretty good job. It was hard to have a conversation because of the number of people in the restaurant. A visit at another time might yield a better assessment.

Wendell's Diner

My parents live in Midtown and any time I go visit, I have to go to Wendell’s. One of my favorite things to eat in the world is a Philly Cheesesteak. It’s kind of a dual edged sword since I get disappointed often. Not at Wendell’s it’s called a Knight Rider staying with the 80s theme. The only thing is I wish they had provolone cheese, but Swiss is good. Yes I know a real Philly Cheesesteak has cheez whiz and that is an option, but I like provolone better. I’ve also had the country fried steak blue plate special and it was good, but still I’m all about the Knight Rider. The only bad thing about the place is sometimes they don’t pay enough attention to drinks. Granted I usually drink a glass of coke before my food comes because I stay thirsty. It’s about the only thing that bothers me. I don’t care if a waitress is rude, just don’t let me run out of drink. Wendell’s is small and I just walk to the counter and they get it for me right away.

Recently visited this restaurant twice with great service and food both times! We both ordered a burger with blue cheese on it and oh my goodness! DELICIOUS! The potato cakes they serve with sour cream are very good! Our server Brandon took care of us both visits and was top notch! Very attentive both trips. Very pleased with the food and service

Walking into the "small" cafe-type building we did not expect a large dining area. But we were surprised to see all the siting/dining space! The immediate entrance is cozy with the cash register and a few "gift-shop" items, but the dining area opens behind the half-wall and is spacious. The food was good. One of us ate the lunch buffet (meat, veggies, salad, etc) and one ordered the reuben sandwich from the menu. The sandwich was very good! The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The homemade desserts and pastries looked wonderful, but we were too full to try them. Not much of an area for parking, but worth the stop! Located on Hwy. 70.

Hard to believe that some of the reviews complained about price. This place is very reasonable for the quality. I had the shrimp quesadilla and it was great. Plenty of shrimp. The lunch salad/ soup and 1/2 sandwich look delicious and very price competitive. The beer they brew is good and they also have others on tap, like Yee Haw, that should cover everyone’s palate. If you are in the area give them a tryGreat service tooThank you so much for the great review!

Can't top the reviews about the place itself, it is beautiful. My wife and I went for her birthday August 17, and we arrived about 30 minutes early and smelled steak cooking when we opened the car door. I had the strip steak and my wife had a pork chop, and neither was well prepared. Apparently they precook the meat and reheat it to serve. My steak and her chop were long overcooked and neither, surprisingly, had any fat. Other than the entrée, the meal was good. However I can get a good steak for a half the cost of this one.
