State Fare Bar + Kitchen

Beyond my expectations, this experience for brunch on New Year's Day was one of the worst. While the food on the buffet was OK (really nothing very special as it should have been), the service was unacceptable. The waitstaff is completely inexperienced and poorly trained, if trained at all. Going to the Ritz for any dining should be impeccable and I certainly hope that some manager is paying attention to this review as it states the facts as they were.1. We were offered coffee eventually when we sat down, but there was no spoon in sight and the waiter asked if we wanted milk or cream, and then never brought it.2. We had to flag down the waiter and watched him pass our table in a hurry about 4 times before we got his attention to refill the coffee. Why not just leave the coffee jug on the table if you're too busy to be attentive to this little detail?3. We chose the buffet, so the waiter didn't even have to serve us. I asked one of the waitstaff if the maple syrup was imitation or real. This is a pet peeve of mine in what should be a top restaurant to find fake maple syrup. She told me should would check but that she was sure they "made it in house". I asked how that was possible given than there were no maple trees in sight....this is Palm Springs! When she didn't return, I asked someone who appeared more senior and she told me several people were in the back looking at the ingredients on the container. While she tried to assure me that it was pure maple syrup, there is only ONE ingredient in maple syrup!4. The fruit on the buffet was cubed like what you might buy in a large container in one of the large big box stores. There was nothing imaginative and we are in California! There was a large bowl of what looked like yogurt, with no label to indicate really what it was.5. The bread and bagels equally looked like they came right from a grocery store package while there is a superb bagel bakery in town that provides for some of the better restaurants. All in all, our experience leaves no room ever for a return here and it speaks volumes about the Ritz Carlton management. These are kids who are waiting on tables and they have no real understanding of the customer's expectations when dining at this type of establishment. The view from the restaurant was the only reason one should return, and you can get that for free at any one of a number of places in the area.

This is a cathedral city institution in a fun, funky Marilyn Monroe themed restaurant. The staff are lovely, but after multiple visits for breakfast and lunch I think the food is just not very good. Eggs are dry, hash browns are undercooked, the lunch meats not the freshest. Sorry Michael’s. I won’t be back.

Located in an old house just off Palm Canyon, across from Cathedral City’s central plaza, Sunshine Cafe has the look and feel of a joint that’s been serving up the same breakfasts and lunches for generations. Regulars tend to predominate, but a visitor will find a decent menu of diner standards. Best to stay with the tried-and-true items here — pancakes, French toast, meat and eggs. More exotic items can be problematic; the huevos rancheros came smothered in what looked and tasted like spaghetti sauce. Service is great, though: every customer is treated like a member of the family.
