A Magical Stay

Reviewed By MaryK811

My family and I stayed two nights in the TumTum Tree Cottage this week as part of a family vacation. This was the absolute best hotel or inn experience we have ever had. We arrived a couple hours before check in and Rick was so accommodating. We were able to stow our bags so we could walk around Cannery Row which is just a few blocks away. The TumTum Cottage is absolutely magical. Views of the ocean, the far off sound of sea birds, and the beautiful trees visible from every window made the suite perfect for immersing ourselves in Monterey. We also loved that the deck around the cottage is enclosed and the cottage separated from the other rooms so we didn’t have to spend the whole visit chasing little ones or telling kids to be quiet. Cookies are available in the house for those afternoon sweets cravings and breakfast each morning is delicious! Even from just our two days we heard and received such personal service at breakfast. They made every effort to accommodate dietary restrictions and find something every guest would enjoy. It was like sitting down to breakfast at a friends house (a friend who can cook a fabulous meal!). We stayed over my husband’s birthday and I was able to use their “add-on” feature to order a cake that was delivered to our room. The cake from the local “Paris Bakery” was beautiful and delicious. I just can’t say enough good things about the people, location, food, and level of accommodations at the Jabberwock. We will never stay anywhere else from now on!

Awful service by owner .

Reviewed By 294destynir

AWFUL BUSINESS! DO NOT STAY HERE ! The owner discriminated towards people of color ! The concept of the hotel is beautiful and I would love to come back but unfortunately the costumer service from the OWNER is beyond DISGUSTING. Nick is incredibly rude and does not know how to speak to woman or people of color . I was yelled at for wearing the robe provided with the room when walking downstairs to grab a charger out of my car . Nick chased me to my car at 12 am it was midnight ! While yelling " WHERE ARE YOU GOING ,ITS ONLY FOR THE BATH " which is odd because I had just used the bath and now I was winding down and starting to relax for the end of the night . In the description of the hotel it says this is the perfect getaway to relax and be at peace but there was no peace . After I proceeded to come up stairs , the owner proceeded to tell me he was not the owner and then told me to go to bed or he'll call the cops . I went to breakfast the next morning , he ignored me and took forever serving me orange juice while he was serving and being so sweet to other guests around me ... (hmm what a coincidence). The staff was amazing and so friendly but frankly the owners behavior and attitude was TERRIBLE and made me so uncomfortable. It truly ruined my weekend getaway , I work over 47 hours a week .Please consider checking out other boutique hotels before coming here. If you would like to visit the hotel , just visit the rooftop on the top of hotel. Very cute and the menu as well as the drinks were great (: very disappointed with the owner and it honestly makes me sad that he treats people like that . I definitely will be back but hopefully have the least amount of interaction with the owner .This was my first time visiting Monterey after 25 years and I can't believe this happened to me . Even when calling and booking the hotel over the phone , nick was very rude , I simply asked what room was available and he said " go look on the website and call back " and then after calling back I asked if he was the owner again he denied . I don't have children but noticed it said no kids allowed , so I asked why Is that ? He said because that's our policy anywho I knew something was off but wanted to give it a chance .... Simply to be let down again .

MOLD - do not stay here

Reviewed By Roebot75

We checked into a suite in the historic Adobe house. The furniture and decor were cute; however, the smell of mold was so strong it was difficult to breathe. We tried to switch rooms, but none were available. Leslie at the front desk was very friendly and apologetic. She agreed the room smell was very bad. We asked for a refund so we could switch hotels because the room was not habitable given the overpowering stench of MOLD. We explained it was just impossible for us to stay in the room as we were both having a terrible reaction to the smell: coughing and headache. Jason the owner became verbally abusive and refused the refund. it was clear this was not the first time this happened that someone refused to stay in this room. We wished Jason a nice evening and left the establishment. DO NOT STAY HERE.

Moderate but decent for one night

Reviewed By Over23ride

We stayed in room #112. Basic room, older, but clean enough. Plumbing in the bathroom was loud when the toilet flushed. Hot water was good. Decent size fridge in the room and was already on for us to use. I was bit in the middle of the night, not sure if it was a random bug bite brought in or from the room or if it was from the mattress (bug or irritant) however my partner was unscathed as he slept all night next to me. Sheets and towels were clean but old/ used of course. Toilet paper wasn’t thin nor sandpaper but was meant for a public bathroom. The pillows were extremely soft. I had to use two of them to barely prop myself up to watch tv and sleep. Tv and cable were good! This was just a room for us to sleep overnight. Not bad for $50 on a Friday which totaled about 12 hours. Although, we will not stay here again, the location is great. Very close to the wharf. Starbucks was walking distance as well as a fish restaurant and a few surf shops. The area felt safe, however it is right off the main road which can be busy. The walls are paper thin. We heard our neighbors (I think room 114) all night into the early morning talking, laughing, and music/ tv /gaming device. The parking lot is small and will only fit a few bigger vehicles but on our night I don’t think it was completely full.
