Lake Tahoe (California) Resorts | Places to Stay in Lake Tahoe (California)

April 23, 2023 Kaleigh Reichenbach

Basking in its 300 days of sunshine, Lake Tahoe is a haven for outdoor fun in every season. Swimming, kayaking and windsurfing are popular in the summer months, while epic snowfall makes for spectacular skiing in winter. For those who prefer indoor fun, there's plenty of that in Tahoe, too. With 24-hour casinos and a flashy nightlife scene, the area has a tangible Vegas vibe. A sprinkle of bling, if you will. Not surprising, since Lake Tahoe straddles the border between California and Nevada.

After a really bad experience at the Edgewood, we moved over to the Landing. This is a delightful property. The rooms are quiet and comfortable. The entire staff is friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. Access to the private beach is especially convenient. We have eaten several meals at the restaurant Jimmy's which is here on property. Friendly efficient staff and great food.

Worst Timberlodge stay we have ever had!

Terrible stay!!!! We have stayed at this hotel several times over the years! NEVER had issues and always treated lovely and suites very well maintained.. but May of 2022 has ruined it for us. Service and quality has really degraded. Arrived 35 minutes prior to the 4pm check in. Reception offered two “views” city or pool. We asked for her recommendation and she said city balcony was the way to go! First mistake! She said half of our 2 bedroom was available and the other would be at the 4 check in time as it was finishing being cleaned. At 4:30 went to check on the other portion of our suite and was told it needed repairs. 5:00 walk to the other door and knock and repair man said he was finishing up. Finally got into our full suite at 5:15!! Over an after check in time! Second issue! Suite issues: refrigerator door did not close properly, wine (hopefully) splatter on laundry doors, giant wet spot on carpet, bathroom doors didn’t lock, hair in shower, broken window (didn’t slide properly and darn near took a finger off), slider to balcony not locking easily making it impossible for me to lock/unlock myself (small children make this a major safety issue), “city view” was of the valet and bus station (LOUD NO view horrible!), people below us were smoking (cigarettes/weed) most of our time we had to open windows or be on recommended balcony, fire place didn’t stay on, and the last THE MATTRESSES!!!! Terrible. Might as well have been sleeping on the floor. 4 awful nights sleep for most of the family, which alters the relaxing Tahoe vacation we are accustomed to. Pool area seems to be more of a party feel on the weekends apparently, that’s new. Very loud music from an establishment within Heavenly Village. And large groups staking claim to fire pits and picnic tables most of the day to prep for their large gathering in the evening. At this point it’s Hyatt at Incline for us, or Edgewood’s new villas!

Great place to stay

Reviewed By gregh0825

I have stayed here several times over the last 18 years when riding the America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride. I like having a suite because it gives me ample room to assemble my bike. I also like having a kitchenette in the suite. It is a nice alternative from the casinos. It's just off the main drag, so it is quieter but convenient to the town. The staff has always been pleasant and this year actually had maps to the town and hiking areas. Complimentary breakfast was included. They were in the middle of property improvements this year (2022) which were greatly needed, so that was just another nice plus. Will stay there again should I go back next year.

TERRIBLE

Reviewed By Rodsr

Wifi did not work properly on my room, or in the lobby. There were cobwebs on the ceiling, on the fire sprinkler, on the curtains. There were pieces of paper on the bathroom ceiling. Ventilation in the bathroom did not work. Light switches had SO much dust and dirt. Windows had a lot of dirt. The sofa bed was in terrible condition. I had to put the mattress on the floor... did not work as the mattress was also in very poor condition. The door had scratches. The curtain was falling from its hooks. The elevator had very poor maintenance. The smoke detector was falling apart. I DID tell the front desk about these problems and all they said was "we'll look into it". It never happened. Never coming back to this hotel. It's a shame.... when it was the "EMBASSY SUITES", it had very good maintenance. Breakfast was expensive for what they offered. There were NO COVID protocols in this hotel. And using this excuse, they DID NOT have chambermaids daily.

Freezing Room!

Reviewed By Skifam08

I must first say that I never write bad reviews for businesses, especially during a time where local businesses are struggling to find employees and recovering after the pandemic. However, after countless times trying to resolve various issues with our visit in February, I felt the need to write a negative review. We are former Tahoe residents, who now frequent north lake during ski season. We have stayed all over the lake, from rustic cottages to budget hotels. We are accustomed to accommodations not being ideal, and we deal with it, with no complaints. However, when it the unit lacks heat during one of the coldest weeks of the year, it's a deal breaker. My son and I were really looking forward to staying at Tahoe Sands for ski week. We have stayed at the resort a few times, and refer our friends as well. I booked 5 days, and our friends stayed in another unit for 4 nights. A storm arrived for the first couple of days, with freezing temperatures, snow accumulation, and high winds. We arrived later in the day after dealing with heavy traffic during the storm. The cabin was cold when we arrived, so we turned on the little gas fireplace. As we sat in the kitchen area wearing our winter jackets and hats trying to keep warm, we noticed snow blowing in the front door of the cabin! At first we thought it was funny, as I quickly placed a large towel around the frame of the door where the snow was collecting. We soon realized that the heater in our cabin was not properly working. My son and I were beyond cold our first night, as the heater completely turned off during the night, and every night thereafter. I notified the front desk, and we were given a space heater the next day. Even with the space heater and the dysfunctional gas fireplace, we were still extremely cold. I asked if we could change rooms (I even offered to clean our room), but that request was denied. I asked for a refund for the first night, or a discount at least, but that was denied as well. Had it not been such a busy week with everything booked around North Lake Tahoe and Truckee, we would have left the resort. By the end of our trip, my son and I had a terrible cold and flu. In all the years of staying at a place in Lake Tahoe, this was our worst experience. We were highly disappointed with the response from the front desk. I even reached out to the main corporate offices (Grand Pacific Resorts) with no luck. There was also a discrepancy on our last bill where I was due a small amount of $21.84. I was just notified that my request for that amount was denied. Wow! I am still in shock over the lack of quality customer service and accountability at Tahoe Sands.
