Soda El TIco

This was a good traditional Nica buffet. Simple tasty budget food. Our only disappointment was that there was not the salads and vegetables we have begun to dream about after a few weeks in Nicaragua. They did gladly substitute the fried plantain or banana for extra veggie or salad, though we got a "why do that?" sort of look. But the food was tasty.

With only one review I was not sure about the restaurant. But, being adventuresome I checked it out for dinner. I sat in their upstairs area with a beautiful view of the city. My waiter spoke no English but was very friendly and willing to please. I order a glass of Cabernet. But like most places they only had one red...merlot. Oh well. I asked him for a recommendation. He suggested the camarones special. I was surprised with the meal. Shrimp and a slice of green pepper wrapped with bacon covered in a sweet and sour sauce. This is Nicaragua - sweet and sour shrimp? It was excellent. The side of rice had been cooked in a seasoned broth which was delicious. Was it 5 star? No but it was a great attempt. My compliments to the chef. He has a future.
