Ecolodge Blue Morpho

We, my nicaraguan wife and I (German), worked lots of years in the tourism sector in Costa Rica. We were responsable for a small hotel on the caribian side. So we have lots of expirience how to handle clients who spend their hard earned money for their vacation and expect to get the best service. The farm, which is located in Cuaquiniquil, Punta Cangreja, Municipality Cárdenas, Department Rivas, Nicaragua we bought in July 2006.After some changes of the former house of the employees we opened the bar / restaurant „Blue Morpho“ on 15th of September 2009. In the municipality of Cárdenas it is also known as “Mariposa Azul“.The name of the place „Blue Morpho“ we chose because the blue butterfly which scientific name is “Morpho Menelaus” you can´t find it everywhere. For example in the municipality of Cárdenas you will find them only in the sector of Cuajinicuil.Nearly an unknown game in Nicaragua—Mini golf. On 13th of June 2010 we opened the Mini golf course. The mini golf course contains of 9 tracks which are not only an easy game. Every track has some useful information about the municipality of Cárdenas and Nicaragua and some more tourist information which every national and international tourist should know.In 2012 the construction of the first 5 rooms was finished to start operation on1st of November 2012.The farm “Blue Morpho” has an area of 5 manzanas which are 3.5 Hectares. Former the farm was used for plantation of cafe, cacao and platano and at least for cattles. For those reasons there are still some cafe plants, trees of cacao and some special type of grass which was used for the alimentation of the cows and cattles.Since we bought the farm we are still in the process of eliminating that types of grass to plant fruit trees and tropical wood trees for reforestation and also we are planting once again cafe and banana trees to maintain the diversity of the plants and animals or if possible to increase their population. In the property there´s passing by a creek with a length of about 300 m. This has all over the year water. During the rainy season sometimes it´s impossible to cross the creek. That´s also the season when the fish Sabalo, a type of trout, enters the creek upstream for the reproduction. In the east there´s a plantation of about 50 Kaokaotrees and cafe plants, new planted Tamarindo, Guanábano, Bread tree and other fruit and tropical wood trees. Here and on the shore of the creek you could observe three kinds of monkeys (howler - / spider - and white face monkey) and the months February / March / April are the best to find sloth. Birds as Martin Pescador, Monte zuma Oropéndola, Crane, Toucan, Colibris and more you could see frequently. The main part of the hill is covered by reed, but we are still working in the reforestation. From the hill you could see a part of the island Ometepe (Vulcan Madera) and the islands of Zanata. The farm produces their own energy by solar panels and wind energy. The hot water is also produced by panels. The system was installed by Ing. Jairo Velásquez, ECAMI SA. from Managua. The water comes from a 21 m deep, hand digged weld. About 300 m from the farm there´s a public access where you can go to the white sandy beach of the Lake Nicaragua (lago cocibolca). That are the reasons why we don´t have TV, air-condition and internet in the rooms (but there is an Wi-Fi area) because we have some much more better: THE NATUREListen to the howler monkeys, feel the breeze of the lake, smell the flowers, see the butterflies and the hummingbirds, eat a mango, enjoy a Macua ......

We had a great time at the Blue Morpho Ecolodge! Michael and Ivania were amazing hosts and made us feel incredibly welcome! The property was beautiful and accomodations fabulous! Michael and Ivania have a lovely property, and made us feel incredibly welcome. Michael was very generous in giving us an amazing tour of the property and helped us greatly in getting around/to and from the border. This was great since it helped us to avoid the slew of crazy taxi drivers! We were able to see monkeys, iguanas, and many other native animals at Blue Morpho Ecolodge. Food and drinks were delicious and at an amazing price. Would definitely recommend! Thank you so much Michael and Ivania! We will be back soon :)

Let me start by saying that it is not the Ritz. In its own quiet way, it is much better! I instantly felt welcomed like family and was overcome by the beauty of this little ecolodge. Nope, you do not have all the comforts of home. First off, why would you even want to watch TV when the scenery is so spectacular? All the windows are screened so I found I didn't miss A/C at all; the breeze off the lake was cooling and the sound of the waves like a lullaby. Everything we ate and drank while we were there was grown, harvested and prepared on site. Yes, even the rice! They make their own cheese and coffee, both of which are delicious! Their honey is from their own bee hives and has a taste quite unlike Canadian honey but equally delicious. I have been in Nicaragua for a month now and, so far, the Tierra Blanca has been my most comfortable stay. I am adjusted to asking for a pump to be turned on so that I may have a shower and to having a cool shower, so neither of these things bothered me. Ask Hernan to give you a tour of the farm! His enthusiasm is contagious and his knowledge is vast! We saw all manner of plants, everything has a purpose. We also got to see the resident monkeys! So cool! Our bed was comfortable and the front porch is a perfect place to spend lazy afternoons and evenings. The shoreline has been left natural so that you can enjoy the quiet and the birds. If you choose to swim, you have to walk about 100 meters down the beach. We were happy to just enjoy how natural everything was; there are lots of other places on the island that you can swim. We have friends joining us from Canada in a couple of months and can't wait to take them to this beautiful piece of Nicaraguan heaven!

Amazing dinners

Reviewed By scotthE6512OT

While we have not stayed at Red Pepper, we have enjoyed several dinners during their Monday curry night and Wednesday noodle night specials. The owners prepare around 25 servings for those special events held just 2 nights per week. Make sure you reserve in advance, because you don't want to miss this! The dinners are delicious, generous portions (enough to save some for lunch the next day - bring your own takeaway container or pay a deposit to use one of theirs), and very reasonably priced ($8 each). The meals are available with chicken or vegetarian - same price. Make sure to save a little room for fresh key lime pie too! Each time we consider a trip over to the Guasacate area on the coast, we always try to include Monday and/or Wednesday stays...simply so we can partake of Red Pepper's amazing dinners. If you're in the area, you owe it to yourself and your taste buds to enjoy at least one of their special dinners.

La Casa de Gio es tu casa

Reviewed By dominicoder

Our stay at Casa de Gio was wonderful. Getting there was easy from the ferry that drops off just a few blocks away. As we got close, some friendly locals pointed us to the entrance. We were able to check in to our room even though we were several hours early. We had reserved a private room. It had a full sized bed, nightstand with lamp, storage space for luggage and clothing, a full-length mirror, a fan, and ample extra space. Our room also included a private bathroom which was welcome. The water was lukewarm but refreshing after a long day in the heat. Outside our room was a small table and hammock chair for lounging. The room did get a little hot but wasn't too bad with the lights off and the fan going. The common area had plenty of chairs, tables, and hammocks for you to lounge around and hang out with other guests. The hostel is spacious with three separate areas where you can hang out in. The open-air space also stayed much cooler than the room so it was a good place to hang out. We enjoyed breakfast at the hostel which was a steal at $4 which included eggs, bread, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed juice, and coffee. We felt completely safe as the front door was locked at night and someone was always at the front desk. Beyond the space what made this a memorable stay was the hospitality. Maria was there to greet us and she and her family made us feel at home right away (and it's literally their home!) She gave us great suggestions on what to do around the island, set us up with a trusted company to rent a quad bike for the day, and answered all the questions we had about Ometepe and Nicaragua. When we checked out, her father even drove us down to the ferry as a courtesy! Just the nicest, warmest people and will definitely stay here again if I find myself back in Ometepe. Do yourself a favor and book yourself a stay. Now!
