We waited until after dark to make the long drive up the mountain to see the beautiful cross overlooking the lights of Jinotega. Although it was misting and a little chilly, we stayed as long as we could. Be sure to bring a flashlight, as there is no lighting until you reach the gazebo and locate the switch to turn on the lights there. But the sidewalk is not lit and can be tricky. The drive up to and away from this beautiful scene is lots of fun!

Lots of people vest to see the painting on the church walls as it includes a painting of the devil which was painted many years before Daniel Ortega came to power but has an uncanny resemblance to him

If you are looking for an authentic rural Nicaraguan experience with a few creature comforts, I highly recommend staying a few nights at Ecoalbergue La Fundadora. It's located in the mountainous coffee country of North Central Nicaragua about 45 minutes from Jinotega and a bit closer to Matagalpa. There's hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The Cabañas are clean, comfortable with hot water! The Ecoalbergue is run by a local cooperative and your stay benefits the community. Great campesino cuisine, really friendly hosts. If you want to explore the Datanli-El Diablo Nature Reserve this is an ideal base.

The San Expedito Cooperative is a women's cooperative of artisans dedicated to making traditional pre-columbian Nicaraguan black pottery. Visitors to the factory see the traditional black pottery production process. We also offer extended tours of the process with hikes to local clay deposits, organized community projects, or preparation of local traditional foods.

An impressive cooperativa of women producing black ceramics. During the visit we felt an open-minded, very friendly and professionel atmosphere. The ceramic work pursues an important local tradition of ceramic production and is part of an initiative to allow women to get their own income and to help them having a independent life. If you see these cheerful women, you know it happens.

La Catedral de Jinotega está situada en el centro de la ciudad, es una iglesia muy linda por dentro, con un diseño impresionante, se mantiene en constante mantenimiento y se ve muy cuidada, si visitas Jinotega debes hacer una parada obligatoria para entrar y conocerla.

Recently, 2 friends and I decided to visit Nicaragua. Heard it was less touristy than Costa Rica, but safe and friendly, We didn't want to use an International Tour Company but decided to try and keep it local. We are all 60ish, reasonably fit and like doing outdoor acitivities. Unfortunately, most in-country tour operators in Nica specialize in certain locations and we had difficulty finding one that would be able to cover the country for the 2 weeks we wanted to go.
Contacted Apanas tours and described what we were looking for; outdoor activities ..no need for high end amenities (but we do like a warm shower once in awhile and cold beer). Julio and Felipe put together an agenda for us that fit the bill.
They had never done such an extended trip as this and we had the usual array of adventures ( 3 flat tires), but, overall, it was one of the most enjoyable trips I have ever taken. They worked very hard to show us their country -- were knowledgable about the history and nature sights. Great food -- great hikes and kayaking.
Felipe (owner/driver) is fluent in English - background in biology/botany. Julio - guide --very knowledgable about the history - outdoor enthusiast - ran a 100 k race last year. Knew all of the good hikes. Where else can you hike up to the edge of an active volcano spewing gasses into the air and look into the crater? and nobody else is around?
I have visited many places in the world, but I would definitely go back to Nicaragua and I would plan on using Apanas tours again.

We live a few blocks from the park and it is always nice to walk through on our way to whatever we are doing. The park has a skate park area, nice Gardens, a library, a big play area for kids, etc.. We have seen sloths on a number of occasions.. but you really have to look for them. We always ask the kids in the vendor booths where they are on a given day and they come out and help loojk for them.

Si vous voulez découvrir le nord du Nicaragua, c'est l'endroit qu'il vous faut! On y arrive en traversant des champs de café, toutes les nuances de vert dans les paysages rappellent la zona cafetera colombienne! Une fois arrivé au centre, plusieurs excursions sont proposées de 2 à 5 heures de marche: cascades, quelques animaux et oiseaux avec un peu de chance, points de vue en haut du macif...bref on ne s'y ennuie pas!
Prenez une petite laine car il y fait frisquet la nuit tombée !
Pas facile d'accès avec les transports locaux et vaut mieux réserver: possibilité de s'y rendre de Leon (Agence el Perezoso) et de Matagalpa (Matagalpa Tours).

Travel Jinotega picked us up from the airport the first time we visited Nicaragua and made what could have been a nerve-wracking experience for newbie travelers into a delightfully relaxing trip to our final destination. We now live here and have used their services on numerous occasions. If you are traveling to Jinotega where the company is based, they also run one of the local taxis and Marconi and his drivers are always very quick and helpful when we call. Thanks Travel Jinotega!
