Could have been better

When I arrived there was only one person working the desk, which was fine. I was given my key and went up to my "suite" Unfortunately it was the only room available because of the ski jumping competition going on there. Of course that meant I had to spend close to 40% more than what the room usually goes for. The room was fine, it had a coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave and a small sitting area. The only issue was the heat. Apparently, it is either on and really hot or off and then gets cold. It is totally the thermastat issue. I tried to regulate but couldn't. I did tell the front desk and she said she could come and see if she could help. Unless she was in maintenance it wasn't going to work so I said NO. I did suggest that they look at it before the next customer comes. I was there for a funeral and 2 nights and was surprised that there was no housekeeping for my days. I did see a housekeeper in the hall and explained that I was going to need towels and she handed me a few towels. Personally, for $200 a night the least they could do is clean. But oh well. For the cost and the issue of the heat, I probably would not stay there again.

I have never been so uncomfortable.

Reviewed By Nicole M

I honestly can say I've never felt so uncomfortable at a hotel and I used to work night shift at one (and so dealt with all the weirdos). The check in process was long, not because of anything that needed to be complicated, but because the man at the desk was asking a ton of personal questions, like about my health and the health of my family (who was not with me). He also was grilling me and my travel partner on the nature of our relationship - we are two women who are most definitely not dating, but we were very glad this was not one of the hotels where we chose a room with one bed over two to save money because I got the very strong impression that that would have been a problem. After assuring him we were platonic friends, and after he said multiple times "oh I made a mistake" while doing the check in (probably because it's hard to interrogate and use Opera at the same time) instead of giving us our keys he tried to hold our hands and asked if we'd pray with him. Both of us were raised Christian so while we were clearly uncomfortable it was not due to an issue with the concept of prayer. He apparently took our discomfort for not understanding and started shouting PRAY! P-R-A-Y at us, until finally when we said no thank you, he relented and gave us our keys. After this, as we made trips from the car, we saw him peering at us from around corners/down the hall, etc, and we not only bolted and chained our door the entire time we were in the room (not just to sleep as we usually do) but I slept horribly the entire two night stay because of anxiety (and feeling judged for traveling with another woman, had he seriously not seen friends travel before? Our room had TWO BEDS) and if we'd had the option of going somewhere else, we would have. The room only had two towels in it - odd for a room with two beds that could in theory hold four people, and the toilet tank was loose, and paint was peeling from the walls. Not the end of the world, but I'm noting it as I know some travelers don't want to stay in places overdue for an upgrade. We did not try the continental breakfast due to being told by other guests that they watch you like a hawk and restrict what you can take (to be clear, I did not personally witness this) and at one point on the second day some people who had just arrived called me over in the parking lot to ask if I thought the desk people were weird. I said yes. They said "okay, we were uncomfortable." I will not stay here again. As a former hotel employee of two different corporations, this is not how you represent the chain you work for. And to anyone who is traveling with a same sex romantic partner, you definitely don't want to stay here as they appeared extremely uncomfortable with us and we aren't even dating. I don't know if that's why we felt spied on or if they do that to everyone, but it was SO creepy and unnerving.

A good place at a good price

Reviewed By Jim L

This was right on our highway and convenient. It was just about across the street from Dobber's Pasties - an excellent regional gem. The MHMI had a cute lobby with a fitness room just up the hall. The room was 2 queen beds, fridge, and microwave. It was very good and especially so for the price - quite reasonable. We slept well. Breakfast the next day was in a small room off the lobby. It was a nice surprise to see breakfast sandwiches offered (microwavable), pastries, coffee, etc. Basic, but it works. If in the area again, this is where I would stay. The room was nice and clean. Staff very nice as well.

I bought the Indy card and will ski Pine Mountain tomorrow morning ski Brule in the afternoon and then head over to Wisconsin. Planning on skiing Spirit Mountain on Saturday and Lutsen on Sunday and Monday. On the way back we will stay in Ironwood four nights and ski big Powderhorn and Indianhead and Whitecap Wisconsin. And Porcupine This has got to be one of the best values i had ever. The room is huge with a king bed has a whirlpool tub, a very tall shower being I am 6 foot eight it is excellent OK there are some issues with minor details. Cigarette butts outside the doors caulking otherwise I would give us a five star rating. I went in the hot tub which is very warm but not hot and there was no one else. The pool is very cold. You have to ask the manager for pool towels towels I also asked for an extra pillow and he came promptly service is pretty good but for $62 out the door you just can’t beat it come on people. Room 208 it’s on the back corner away from the road and it is nice and quiet in here very impressed but I stay again absolutely in a heartbeat. My wife and I played Timberstone golf club last summer and it is a fantastic course but gray walls was our favorite up in Marquette Michigan. Came here for one night on a Saturday. Was expecting a bit more for $157 (including taxes) per night, not to mention I see this listed at even much higher rates. The staff is friendly. Our room smelled musty and didn't look like it had been updated ever. The heating/A/C unit looked like it was from the 1970s. Our TV didn't work at all which was very disappointing. It said weak or scrambled signal. Breakfast was ok. It wasn't terribly busy and I'm still trying to figure out why the high price for not that nice of a place. With that said, the beds were fine and the room did seem clean.

Wish we would have known that the continental breakfast was no longer being served. I'm assuming because of Covid-19, but still.

Weekend spent for family reunion in the UP of Michigan. Room #125,Outdated room decor, can deal with that, BUT NOT DIRTY ROOMS. Bathroom tile floor grout stained, grout at bottom of bath tub and floor stain, and tub. You could use the toilet paper to sand rough sawed wood. Only 2 hangers in room, really???? The heat furnace ran constantly. Hallway carpet, has stains, and frayed strands coming from under room door. Breakfast was wrapped muffins, waffle maker, cold cereal, coffee, just ok. Front staff was friendly, the only redeeming factor. Will be standing at the American Inn next trip to Iron Mountain.
