History and monuments dot this landscape almost as often as the golden farmlands. Learn about America’s 31st president at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch. In northeast Iowa is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a group of prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds. This part of Iowa is also home to the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage. The 37-county region tells the story of American agriculture, agribusiness and farm life and is affiliated with the National Park Service. In addition, there are five national wildlife refuges here.
If you love history, imagine seeing the Amana Colonies, consisting of seven historic villages in 1855 by German immigrants as a religious communal society. Here you can also buy antiques, hand-woven baskets, furniture and clocks and locally made wine and beer. In Ames, take the family to see the Christian Petersen Art Museum, a newer structure that exhibits works of art by Christian Petersen and contemporary artists. You won’t want to miss the state capital of Des Moines, home to Blank Park Zoo with its naturalistic exhibits and more than 800 animals from five continents. You also should enjoy the Brenton Skating Plaza, an outdoor family entertainment venue.

We thought we’d check this place out for a night as its only a little under 2 hours from where we live. Probably won’t be back. Staff was all friendly so 5 stars for that as you don’t see that often. However, between the run down waterpark, kids running up and down the halls until 11:30 at night, and the arcade being an absolute joke, this place is not worth it. They need to shut this place down and do some major reno. Also I’m not sure if all rooms have a balcony but ours did and they need to put some type of room darkening shade on the door. I’ll drive the extra hour it takes for us and go to Great Wolf next time. Cheaper and better experience.

The place was clean, and pretty much spotless. It had everything! I needed an iron and they had it. The were also quick to respond and even replied on a Sunday. I will definitely be using them again for my next visit to the Quad Cities!
We're Bent River Extended Stay and we've been an extended stay hotel here in Keosauqua, IA since 2014. The owner Julie bought the cabins first and saw a need to serve the community and she had the perfect building. Julie loves to travel and to stay at nice, clean, comfortable places and that's what she wanted her lodging options to feel like for travelers. It feels like you're staying at home when you aren't. We're not a B&B, not a hotel, very much a home/apartment feel for your stay. Great for stargazing. We're looking forward to growing our business to continue to serve the community. We'd like to personally invite you to contact us today for your next stay!

West Oaks Resort is anchored on the shore of beautiful West Lake Okoboji. Our proximity to the lake means unlimited recreational opportunities are right outside your door every day. Every season. Many of the lakes' best restaurants are nearby and you're just minutes away from numerous golf courses. Kids of every age will enjoy the Arnolds Park Amusement Park, the oldest amusement park west of the Mississippi. The spacious units at West Oaks include two bedroom, two bathrooms with large walk-out patios. The linen closets are stocked with towels and bedding and the fully equipped kitchens offer everything necessary to prepare a gourmet meal. The resort also has bikes, canoes and paddle boats for your use. The resort is open year round.
Our go to vacation week to watch" ice out" on West Lake Okoboji - the only spring fed glacial lake in the USA. The week of Spring Equinox often provides an opportunity to see the season change. The lake can change color, with white ice and melting changing the color to blue liquid water. This year, the week began warm, with Sunday nice enough to sit and drink beer on the deck. Days with cold, wind, rain and snow followed. Kitchen is quite well equipped for cooking, and this week was very quiet and relaxing.

Very industrial hipster place, but it’s pricey. Two bedroom suite was nice, comfortable. Secure elevator which is nice. Below there is a bar (no food) with games. Free parking on site and across the street. However it is very close to a train crossing so it is loud.

My initial impression of West Okoboji Cottages was that they were "too good to be true." The cottages looked amazing online, but the few reviews that I could find were negative.. which made me apprehensive to book them (to say the least). I then went ahead and called the owner to discuss the discrepancies between their website and the reviews. One of my biggest fears is booking a cabin/hotel/Airbnb and later finding out that 1) it doesn't exist or 2) that is does, but is a complete dump (i.e., looks nothing like the pictures). Things I learned upon talking to the owner: His family had recently purchased the cottages and were in the process of renovating/remodeling them. The negative reviews that I encountered were in reference to the old cottages/previous owner. The new cottages do in fact look like the pictures on their website and they are family-owned and -operated. After a big sigh of relief, I went ahead and booked them for 5 days. Someone was there to greet us when we arrived. This is also when we received the key to our cottage. We had no issues getting into the cottage, which I know was a common problem in the past (with the former owner). The cottage was not only clean, but straight out of Pinterest. We loved having our own living room and kitchen. We also loved the fact that the lake was within walking distance; in fact, we could see it from our cottage. Complaints? No issues arose during our stay. My only grievance would be that it took a little bit of work (multiple calls) to get ahold of the owner. However, this is a common issue with renting cottages/cabins in the area. Would I stay here again? Yes. Would I recommend West Okoboji Cottages to a family member/friend/random stranger? Absolutely.
