While in Japan, we visited the picturesque fishing village of Tomonoura, a 30 minute bus ride from the train station in Fukayama. The village is nestled in a bay on the water with an old time feel. There are many shops, temples and shrines. It is an easy walk though the village, but the highlight for us was finding the local Otebi Japanese restaurant. We asked a local where to eat and he advised us to walk a block up from the water and to turn right, looking for the orange lanterns outside. When we walked in, we were warmly greeted by no less than 5 women of various ages working in the little kitchen. We were the only people in the place that had room for 5 people at the counter and 2 tables. We were promptly served tea and ordered lunch from a picture menu. The food was fantastic Japanese traditional fare. While we were enjoying the experience other people from local residents to other tourists tricked in until the place was full, others waiting outside. My wife had the pork cutlet and I had the sashimi, both with miso, rice and tea. A a wonderful little place.

My friend and I arrived here at approximately 1.40 pm on a weekday and the restaurant had 2 other customers. The waitress initially had a look of surprise when she saw us (and I think they were starting to clean up) but we were welcomed to sit at the bar and given a menu. I ordered the seabream sashimi on rice with a pot of kombu clear soup to pour over. The meal was absolutely delicious. It was clean, tasty and filling enough for lunch. To recognise the shopfront, look for the menu in the pictures attached by other customers. If you are taking the bus from Fukuyama, continue walking north from the bus stop heading for the port. The restaurant is about a 5-7 min walk from the bus stop on the other side of the road.

Quick decision staying at the hotel in Fukuyama, and quick dinner at the station. I checked restaurant site and this was a good reputation. Yes, I could enjoy Setouchi fish for Tempura, Kaisen bowl, but for me they were just enough, but very great. Maybe during Golden week?
