Looking for an authentic Alaskan experience? Visit Haines. A popular cruise port, Haines is a great place to see the outdoors – hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing are all popular activities. A top local attraction is the decommissioned military outpost of Fort Seward, now an historic landmark. Bird watchers take note: the world's largest concentration of bald eagles comes to the area every autumn.

We stayed for 3 nights. The bed was comfortable and the room had plenty of space. It was nice to have a small kitchen. The shower and bath were clean and the hot water operated well. Coffee is provided in the morning by the front desk. It sits within walking distance to grocery, restaurants and shopping. Not much was open

Lovely room. Breathtaking views.

The room was scrupulously clean with amenities including microwave, refrigerator, coffee machine and fuzzy blanket. The room was lovely with pine paneling and a big picture window overlooking the lake with breathtaking mountain view. There is a porch with chairs and benches and a table that overlooks the water with mountain view. Not all rooms face the water so you may want to request that. The staff was very nice and accommodating.

Halsingland Hotel

fine place to stay

Reviewed By William H

The Halsingland is a bit funky and old-fashioned, but it does fit in well with its old Fort Seward setting and it is comfortable. The rooms are spacious, the beds firm (and I slept well), the bath clean, the water hot and the towels fluffy and warm. The location is central, a 2-3 block walk to the center of Haines, with a fine unobstructed view across the open old parade field looking down to the harbor and on to mountains across the ocean segment that locals call the Canal. I’ve stayed at the Halsingland three times, one night each over a three-year period. The staff have always been friendly and exceptionally helpful with information about restaurants, museums, and their own favorite activities in the town. The restaurant in the hotel is also good, although it’s always been nice to get out to some of the other eating options around town. Breakfast coffee is plentiful as are the excellent pastries that come with it.

We thought staying in the center of town is a mistake. Lately, there are more cruise ships stopping in Haines. If you are looking for experiencing the magic of this amazing community, then head off a mile out of town to the Beach Roadhouse. Their cabins are spotlessly clean, spacious, amazingly comfortable and with all the necessary amenities. On top of that, the wifi is strong. Amber is a wonderful and accommodating host and the location is magical. If you do not have a car and arrive by ferry, Amber will pick you up and drop you off, and she will also rent her car by the day at a very reasonable price. The starting point for the Battery Point walking trail is just a 5 minute walk down the road. We regretted not staying longer and will definitely be back. Highly recommended!!
