Reviews on European food in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom. Once a shipbuilding city, Newcastle's flashier claim to fame is nightlife. Throw in a heap of premium restaurants serving foods from all over the world and it's no wonder young partiers choose to blow their hard-earned (or not-so-hard-earned) cash in Newcastle. While these amenities are certainly a draw for the hipsters and culture-seekers, it's the locals that make Newcastle a truly special place to visit. "Geordies," as they are often called, embody the pride, industriousness and resilient spirit of their city.

Very pleasant restaurant in minimalist style over 3, open floors. Creative menu was a lunchtime taste experience from the table d'hôte menu. Loved the amuse bouche, flavoursome and a great intro to the starter and mains. Service excellent, efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. Nothing pretentious about Peace and Loaf just consistent care to deliver taste.

Had a chilled lunch here with my daughter on Sunday afternoon. Food was good and pleasant atmosphere despite being right inside Eldon Square. Served by Conor who was fab and recommended the churros for dessert which my daughter absolutely loved!House red I'd definitely recommend too, we will return!

The French Quarter is a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant & wine Bar in a community of unique and quirky businesses in Newcastle city Centre. We are a friendly and approachable team of people, with a passion for the good things in life. Born from nostalgia
My husband and I visited The French Quarter for a late lunch. We ordered from the lunchtime set menu, 3 courses for £11.99. We both started with squid, very tasty, I followed on with fish which was beautifully cooked. My husband had chicken with mash in a blue cheese sauce which looked scrummy and we both finished with creme brulee which was delicious. The portions were fairly small but it was a lunch. The quality of food was very good. Our waiter was excellent, friendly and informative. We had a leisurely lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it, We will definitely return when next in Newcastle.

At Starks it's all about serving fresh, tasty food using the best ingredients. During the day we serve brunch from 10 - 3pm and a selection of cakes until 5pm. In the evening we set the tables, light the candles and offer a vibrant, seasonal dinner menu.
Every now and again you come across a place where they just got things right and Starks Kitchen is one of those places. The decor is simple, modern, clean and bright with white walls, tasteful prints and a mix of banquette seating and chairs. Two of us went for the veggie Sunday roast while the third went for beef. Dinner took a little way to arrive but was great when it did. I'm not a veggie, but the nut roast was delicious, my wife enjoyed the beef which was tender and cooked just pink. The plates arrived with a good Yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, a quenelle of mashed potato, a quenelle of carrot & swede and of course gravy. A bowl of french beans, cabbage and some mange tout came out for the table plus side of cauliflower cheese.Everything was great, really great. The veg was perfectly cooked and tasty. If I was going to be really picky, the gravy was slightly over seasoned but hey, I don't use a lot of salt!I went for the cheese as a pudding, an excellent cheddar and a soft blue, while my daughter went for the pecan pie.The meal was finished off with a couple of good coffees. We booked for a late Sunday lunch via Open Table on the same day which worked well. All round, a really good experience and I thought, good value.

Beautiful Sunday lunch with generous meat portions as well as a side of veg, gravy and trimmings. We went for the Supplemented trio of meats and Sticky toffee pudding and both were excellent. One slight gripe is they couldâve put a couple more roast potatoes on the plate rather than having to order a few more as a side for £4. This seems to be the norm at most restaurants these days. Thank you for taking the time to leave us this review, we hugely appreciate it and hope to see you again very soon.Best wishes Sophia

It isn't quite the "authentic Italian" that the review in the Financial Times suggested, but it wipes the floor with most high street Italian restaurants. Following the FT's advice, we had the meatballs polpette. Excellent. The risotto funghi was also better than most. A good Primitivo, better than many. (Nice with the meat balls.) Pity it was down to small bottles of Prosecco rather than something a bit different. Italians have a much better choice of sparkling wines that we see in the UK. And don't even think of asking for Prosecco in Bologna.Excellent seafood pasta, with no attempt to sprinkle parmesan on top. (A crime against cooking that they did try in another Italian restaurant in London recently.) This is the sort of place that you'd love to have round the corner. Good service and a silly price. I mean <£90 for so much good food and wine? We paid twice that the next day for a decidedly average meal.Just one problem, the taxi driver had a problem finding the place. It hardly stands out in the dark.

This was our 4th visit in 3 months and booked for my birthday. We ordered 6 tapas between us I chose my 3 favourite, meatballs, patatas bravas and romesco chicken. My partner had cod fritters, calamari and meatballs. The chicken was skin on and a seemingly disproportionate amount of skin to chicken, unlike previous times the chicken had no skin. When the table was cleared I expressed disappointment and pointed out all the skin. There was no apologies only a comment that the recipe had changed from breast to thigh and cooked skewered! Thigh meat tastes different so I dont think it was but my comment was dismissed. If the recipe was changed I think it should be fully described on the menu particularly regarding skin. This person also advised that a previously enjoyed dessert is kept frozen and could be available on my birthday... incorrect!Lastly and we could forgive this if nothing else was amiss. Dishes come one or a couple at a time, waiting for all the food to be on the table first served is cold. It may be a small kitchen but ive seen smaller cope and serve hot food.May be a while before we go back!Dear Imas52,We are sorry that after your visit yesterday evening you felt the need to leave us a poor review. This is exceptionally disappointing for us as it is our first âpoorâ review out of the 90 reviews we have received in the 7 months we have been trading. There seems to have been some confusion regarding the Romesco chicken dish that you ordered. We have always used chicken thigh from the day we opened, as we feel it is the best type of chicken to use for tapas. The first chicken dish we had on the menu was â chicken skewersâ and these were made using â skinlessâ chicken thigh. We changed the dish to the current â Romesco chickenâ in June and for this we use â skin onâ chicken thigh. You state in your review that you have visited us 3 other times in the last 3 months and that last night you ordered the chicken as one of your âfavouritesâ. From this we come to the conclusion that you have ordered this chicken every time you have visited us in the past and had no previous issues with the skin? This can only make us think that the portion of chicken you received last night was a little skin âheavyâ compared to what you have eaten on previous visits. We apologise that this wasnât to your liking but we do hope you understand, that we cannot control the amount of skin that the chicken grows, in the same way that we cannot control the amount of fat the pig lays down on the pork belly that we serve. With regard to your comment about dessert, this has confused us greatly and we apologise if we have misunderstood what you have written regarding this. We do not freeze any of our desserts after we make them, and do not use â bought inâ frozen desserts. We pride ourselves on the fact that we make everything â in houseâ and the only frozen things we have on the dessert menu are our ice cream and sorbets ( which are again, made in house). From what you have written we can only think that you had one of our â desserts of the weekâ on a previous visit and have somehow assumed that this was a frozen dessert pre bought dessert, that would have therefore been available again on your next visit. We do allow our customers to request and pre order certain dishes that they have previously enjoyed from our blackboard specials and had you requested this â previously enjoyed dessertâ for your birthday visit we would have happliy tried to accommodate this for you, in the same way that we accommodated the request you made to sit on a specific table on the night of your visit. Our dishes do come out one or a couple at a time from the kitchen. Tapas should be eaten as it reaches the table and as this is how it is served in Spain, this is how we serve it at Boquerones. The dishes come out as and when they are ready and each dish has a different cooking time. We cannot therefore hold all of the dishes back in the kitchen until everything is ready as this would then almost definitely ensure that some would come out hot and some cold. Sending everything â at onceâ would then also slow down the entire nights food service and make each table wait at least 20 minutes for their food. Which, when some of our dishes take 3/4 minutes to cook, this just doesnât make operational sense to hold it all back.We are truly sorry you did not enjoy your visit. We do hope that this response clears things up for you and we would have loved to have discussed all of the above with you last night, if you had told us at the time about all of the things you were unhappy with. This could have then ensured that you left us feeling happy, that we had taken your feedback onboard, that we had fully apologised to you and had tried to resolve your issues. If we do not know we have problems, we cannot fix them and we would much rather do this face to face at the time they arise, as Iâm sure 99% of the other restaurant operators in Newcastle would. You say you may not return to us for a while, during that time if you go somewhere else and something goes wrong, tell them at the time, it really is better for everyone all round.Team Boquerones

Just moved in a stone's throw from here and I've been twice in a week. Great food, excellent service and some interesting Turkish wines - rarely seen.I've tried both the a la carte and the early evening special menus. Both great. On night one, my red wine was corked, the waiters were very understanding and changed the bottle, agreeing the two smelled very differently. I'll be back often, it's my new local
