Le Commerce. On our first evening in Cherbourg we wanted to make sure our friend Tony was well fed and well impressed.Consequently, we decide on taking a short walk from our hotel to “Le Commerce” restaurant. This is quite a large, for Cherbourg, restaurant. It is bright and welcoming and can, at times be very busy. We tend to eat early and so arrived about 18:45. The restaurant was empty but it was soon buzzing. We were welcomed by a lovely young lady who gave us a choice of where to sit. We chose a table away from the bar area as we had learned from experience that the bar was where guests congregated whilst waiting for a table and it could get a bit “lively” with an attendant noise level! We made ourselves comfortable and soon the menus arrived.Jean ordered her usual Rosé wine. I ordered a beer (Baron Kanter) and Tony ordered a ½ litre of the house red. A decision he would regret later as he could not finish it even though it was very good. The drinks were soon on the table and the waitress arrived to take our food order.Jean did not want a starter and ordered the fried salmon with lemon sauce and rice. Tony and I both wanted starters and it so happened that the starters we wanted were also on the special, 3 course “Menu Du Commerce”.So, we ordered from this set price meal. For Tony it was the Eggs mayonnaise followed by the cod in shrimp sauce with chips. I ordered the rabbit terrine also followed by the cod but with boiled potatoes. The included deserts were, for Tony, Creme Brûlée and for me Tart au Pom de Normandie. Jean decided that she had room for a creme Brûlée.The terrine was very tasty. Served with small pickled onions and a couple of cornichons. It was dressed with a small salad garnish. On Tony’s plate was a small salad, two boiled eggs, halved and each half topped with a large swirl of a very rich mayonnaise. On the side for our starters was a large basket of excellent French brad.Jean’s salmon arrived. It had said “fried” but in fact it was lightly sautéed. Jean said it was moist and tender and the best she had had for a long time. Complete with a huge pile of nice white rice and a small salad she loved it.I then ordered a glass of dry white wine to go with my fish.My cod turned out to be a lovely large loin. Nicely cooked with a light covering of shrimp sauce. Tony said his “frits” were great and my huge pile of (9) boiled potatoes were well cooked with just a little firmness. Just as I like them. A very nice main course. The deserts were another matter. They were huge. The creme Brûlée were in dishes about 6 inches in diameter. Tony manage his but Jean was beaten, just about managing the sugar topping and a spoonful or two of the custard! My tarte was a wedge of delight. About 8 inches long and 6 around the outer crust it was wonderful. Lovely big chunks of apple on the frangipani filled base with a sweet, apricot glaze. Perfect! We declined coffee and asked for the bill.2 x Menu Du Commerce @ €18 = €361 salmon in lemon sauce = €12.601 creme Brûlée = €5.801 large beer = €51 glass Rosé = 3.201 glass white = 2.90½ litre red wine = €8.80Total = €74.30 (£66).A great meal for three at a sensible price.

Booked in to eat as part of a sailing rally group. The service was chaotic and waitress severely stressed out and spoke very little English. My fish dish was disgusting - badly cooked, grey-looking and floating in liquid. Another member of the party ordered a dish which later transpired to be for 3!! No one advised her of that despite everyone else having ordered their own meal. The management proceeded to charge her for the dish for 3 with very little sympathy for the misunderstanding. All in all pretty dreadful experience....wont be going back on next visit to Cherbourg.

Pleasant typical irish style pub, once inside it was a familiar smaller irish pub.Stopped here by chance as when we wandered around cherbourg on sunday evening most places seemed closed.Reasonable range of draft beers. Nice beer and friendly service. They were listing food available but we didnt partake.

Great pizzas in a family environment. Large portion sizes and a good choice of non pizza meals. Friendly to kids and fantastic views! You'd normally have to pay a lot more for such amazing views. It did get very busy and a couple of nights we could not get a table. Worth booking!
