Crestwood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,950 at the 2010 census. Crestwood has been cited as a success story by proponents of low taxes and minimal government, but in April 2009, the Chicago Tribune revealed that Crestwood's low taxes were due to illegally saving money on its water bills by secretly supplementing its drinking water from a well that was contaminated with toxic chemicals. "Officials in the south suburb had pumped tainted water to residents for more than two decades to avoid the cost of fixing leaky water mains."

It is absolutely horrible! My brother and I went in on a Friday evening and I should've known since there were only 2 other people in the restaurant. The chips were excellent and the salsa was OK. That was it. We had chicken/steak fajitas and then got ala carte items of a steak taco, chicken enchilada, tamale, and a flauta. The chicken/steak fajitas were OK, but there were like 3 pieces of each, chicken and steak...not even enough for 1 person. The tamale was OK, too, but the chicken in the enchilada and flauta was terrible. However, it wasn't the worst thing we ate that night...the steak in the steak taco was disgusting. It tasted like it had sat on a counter for a month without refrigeration or it was road kill. The best part of it was, our server came by and asked if we needed a box for the taco. I told her that it was not good, the steak tasted spoiled, and it was horrible. She said, OK and went and got the bill. Really? OK? I thought that maybe she would've taken the horrible tasting taco off the bill, but nope...it was on there. And her response to a horrible dinner was OK. We wasted our money on this restaurant. You've been warned...it is horrible Mexican food. Not authentic, horrible quality, and people that don't care if you liked it or not. Awful.

Don't let the exterior put you off. Do notice all the incredible plants in the window and the awesome plant around the counter. It's tiny with only about 8 tables and a limited menu with the standard Mexican fare of burritos and tacos. The staff was friendly the service prompt and the food was tasty. The tortilla on the burrito was grilled or toasted slightly and had a quite interesting flavor. I would've preferred actual black beans instead of refried beans in the burrito but it was still quite pleasant. The tacos are available in corn or flour tortillas. It's worth visit.

Mario's Tacos

Reviewed By Taylor B

My wife and I usually don't dine at ethnic or sushi restaurants. Cajun isn't in my culinary vocabulary. Mexican restaurants usually offer too much salsa or jalapeno or guacamole. But we made an exception recently when my sister, who will eat anything at any time at any place, recommended Mario's Tacos in our hometown of Blue Island, Illinois, one of Chicago's south suburbs. Located at 13325 Olde Western Avenue, one block west of South Western Avenue on the south side of the bridge that spans the Cal-Sag Canal, Mario's is housed in a historic building. Mario Mendez opened his restaurant in 1990, with an outside dining patio garden with cafe tables and nighttime twinkling lights. No neon beer signs in the windows or TV screens in the dining rooms. It's a family-friendly restaurant that emphasizes tacos, tostadas, enchiladas and quesadillas, chorizo and eggs, home-made guacamole and refried beans. Beer, wine and blended drinks such as pina coladas, margaritas and daiquiris are very popular. Two of the best sellers are the enchilada platter and the carne asada con rajas. So what did we have? I ordered Coctel De Canarones (shrimp cocktail), Caldo De Res (beef with rice and vegetables soup) and Tampiquena (steak with rice, beans, salad and one enchilada, no guacamole please). My wife opted for Caldo De Pollo (chicken soup with rice and vegetables) and the taco dinner (three tacos--steak, chicken and steamed beef--served with rice and beans). For dessert, we shared a big plate of flan, or Mexican custard, which is as light and delicious as any dessert you can imagine. We are a pair of retired 77-year-olds who realize you are never too old to try something different. Please give me another order of flan.

Stayed in the area just found this on TripAdvisor so figured we would try it. Food was good, burrito was pretty big. Has its own take on authentic, from Texas so hard to beat tex-mex. Overall a good place would return.

I live within walking distance of Pepe's Restaurant and have never had a bad experience having been there dozens of times. The food is always well prepared, hot and well presented by very courteous staff. We see the same faces (staff) there all of the time and besides the delicious fare, we also enjoy the friendly conversation with everybody working there. If you like your food spicey or mild, either way, they aim to please. Full bar service as well, great Margaritas. Clean restaurant and clean restrooms. It's a no-brainer, go there and see!

This is my FAV mexican. I found it through an old friend, and anytime I'm passing through the south side, Midway, or heading down 57S, I go out of my way to come here. Get anything, but steak tacos are my fav. You can have two people eat a full meal here for $10! Great value and wishing for them to come to the north side. Always busy. Great service, very polite and keep it clean.
