Otoro Sushi

Reviewed By Sharon D

Hidden behind a Taco Bell on a busy corner, decent sushi at very reasonable prices. Restaurant was clean, service was friendly and prompt. Quantity is clearly a draw here but the quality was certainly acceptable. The $10 two item lunch is a real deal and the perfectly ripe fruit in the Bento box was a nice touch. Daughter had tempura udon and they correctly serve it with tempura brought on the side for the customer to dip. We were on the later side, 1:10 so were seated right away and food came quickly. Good value, I would eat here again when in Scotts Valley/Mt.Hermon

Rumble Fish

Back in Scott’s Valley and at Rumble Fish again, as promised in my previous review, about 9 months ago. The only major change that this visit was now for dinner, and we weren’t disappointed. Instead of Bento boxes, we had dinners which included salad, tempura, fruit, miso and a selection of family sized sushi. California rolls, Godzilla roll, which was very delicious and no one felt like destroying cities after we ate (LOL). Service was excellent.when we arrived they were very busy, but opened another section for our. This place can’t be beat. Will return next time we are in the area.

Sushi Garden

Went to this restaurant for lunch when we visited some friends in Scotts Valley. They didn't exactly recommend it for quality, as they (Together with us on a previous visit 1.5 years ago) haven't been there since it changed owners. Mostly because it was convenient. The previous experience was not a good one due more to bad service than the food which was so-so. So we decided it give it another try as I really wanted to have some Japanese food. The decor of the restaurant, in an outdoor shopping center, didn't look much different from its predecessor, with a big sushi island in the middle and fairly spacious and comfortable seating around it. Environment was pleasant enough. Service was better, the food however was very disappointing, I had the bento with tempura and California rolls, the batter on the tempura was so thick that I had to peel it off in order to get to whatever little bits of food that's inside, otherwise you could take multiple bites and never get past the batter. The California rolls were huge but totally bland with unappetizing color and mushed up fish stick filling, I wasn't sure if there were even any avocados in them. One of us ordered grilled fish and it came with a huge amount of not very fresh lettuce and 2 tiny pieces of fish hidden from view like they were buried there as an afterthought. Also had the age tofu, which came in a huge portion, but no representation whatsoever, you just get a large pile of cubed fried tofu and a bowl of dipping sauce that didnt have much flavor. I concede that restaurants don't have to serve everything the same way, but this was the first time I saw age tofu prepared in this undignified fashion. I'd hate to say that this was the worst Japanese food I'd ever had but there's just no other way to describe the experience. I am not familiar with Scotts Valley so not sure what alternative there is for Japanese food or whether this happens to be the locally preferred style. But needless to say when we visit again, we will not be going back.
